Burg Dinner with Friends (Puligny-Montrachet): Sensational wine. Nose started slowly with caramelized fruit and some butterscotch, but picked up some baked apple notes along the way. Palate was more opulent and powerful, showcasing orchard fruit start-to-finish with intense sweet brown spice. Excellent.

Only two of us two savour this one. A rare treat. Decanted and drank over three-four hours. Deep, dark golden in colour like a treasure that had just been unearthed from a much older vintage and you could be forgiven for thinking the wine was developed prematurely. This was an aberration and any negativity that was lurking subconsciously was quickly laid to rest upon tasting. This was an enigmatic wine with a cornucopia of flavours as wonderful and exciting as aged wine gets. Like creeping to the crest of the rollercoaster and then hanging on for the ride, what a rush! A decadent, hedonistic Batard with immense power and length. Very big, rich, concentrated wine with tremendous bone shaking acidity that still holds this monolith together. By the last glass it was like a tsunami to the senses, a meteorite exploding onto the tastebuds leaving a crater like impression of flavour. Interesting to see if the modern ones will ever be as good as this. Royalty.

A decadent evening (Sydney, Australia): A slightly lighter colour than the 1998. Opens with a nose of intense sesame prawn toast and rubber. With time, the rubber dissipated somewhat although the sesame remained along with gunflint, smoke and grapefruit. A toasty palate with good structure initially thanks to a strong core of acid that carries a bit too strongly into the slightly short finish.

Rodger Arai. Sadly this has become an orange wine.
