Tasted blind. Herbal notes, some dried berries, and a hint of plums on the nose. Dark fruit with structural tannins, some vanilla notes, and slightly sweet fruit on the palate. Good finish. This grew on me a lot with air in the glass, but it's just a little too sweet.

Drank at WWS Amarone tasting blind vs a 1997 Roverone Amarone. This 1994 had a very funky nose at first, which shortly blew off. Aromas of stewed prunes & raisins, which also were quite apparent on the palate. Solid core of fruit, well-structured with a great amount of black fruit, solid acidity and concentration. This was voted WOTN by a wide margin, with which I agreed, though primarily because it was the most 'Amarone-like' wine of this evening. Some of the other older wines are nearly, or still plateauing and will outlast this wine by several years. I believe this wine has peaked (drink up). The 97 Roverone was in great condition, deep ruby in color with few visible signs of its age. Plenty of vibrant black fruit here, with prunes and raisins plentifully in evidence. Still with crisp acidity, tannins are soft and mostly resolved. Not as structured, or as long as the Cesari, and a bit sweeter. All in all, a well-preserved, very pleasant Amarone.

Opened and thought I had held too long, brownish and musty (first few years I had this bottle I did not have proper storage). However after decanted and breathed for 2 hours this wine came alive. I had tasted at Sea Side Red Wine festival in mid 90s and thought it was best at festival (I loved big wines back then). It was big enough to mature for 15 years. Best Amarone I have ever had.
