  • Deep cherry red color with a developed maroon hue; quite opaque due to the haze from the disturbed deposit. Developed, aged and attractive nose with some sweet balsamic VA and aromas that remind me surprisingly much of aged Bordeaux. There are notes of dried blackcurrants, ripe and sweet darkberries, some meaty character, a little bit of umami, a hint of cherry jam, a floral touch of perfumed rose petals and a whiff of molten milk chocolate. Very beautiful and complex nose of a mature Nebbiolo. The wine is full-bodied, silky and thoroughly resolved on the palate with a little bit sweet flavors of ripe forest berries, slightly pruney fruit, cherry marmalade, meaty umami character, moderate oak spice, a little bit of chocolate tones, a hint of leather, a touch of cocoa and a nice counterpoint of sour cherry and woody bitterness. The wine is moderately high in acidity for a wine from the hot vintage of 2000, but apparently the cellaring has done its job, as the tannins feel thoroughly resolved, mellow and easy. The wine finishes on a developed and very complex note of crème de cassis, dried dates, sweet oak spice, some milk chocolate, a little bit of maraschino cherry and a hint of leather with some nice, light grip and a hint of bitterness from the tannins.

A beautiful, mature Barbaresco that is slowly starting to hit its peak. The structure feels quite resolved already but even though the wine is from a hot vintage (that hasn't produced much Nebbioli that I have liked), the fruit here isn't too sunny and sweet and despite its age, the wine still shows enough life to develop further. Although the wine has obviously seen quite a bit of oak in its youth, the wood character seems to be integrating quite nicely with the fruit now. Perhaps a little bit more time in the cellar would make the wine lose a bit more of that oak? At least it still feels that the wine can develop more from here - not much, but a little bit nevertheless. Very lovely and thoroughly enjoyable mature Barbaresco - especially one from 2000 - with room still for a point or two more. Probably at its peak now or in 3-5 years and I'd say it will keep for approximately 10 more years.

  • Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2014-01; Nebbiolo (By FB): Carmine red brown color. In the bouquet mature, a bit organic even and iron. On the palate sweet spices, sweet licorice, chocolate, coffee, cinnamon, some currants and a touch of sweetness. Also good acidity and soft tannin. This wine/bottle is fully mature now. Drink now.
