  • Too bad; way over the hill. Drinkable but not much left.

  • IT's an old wine, and it's not going to improve any more. If you like old wines, buy it and drink it now. (Hint: K&L seems to have bought a lot of the Diageo library after the sale of the wine business. There's one bottle left as I write this.) Tomato leaf and a funky nose on opening. Cork broke off (use the puller!) but got the last part out cleanly. Initial taste was that same tomato leaf. IF you like old wine... Tons of sediment in the neck, wine bricking a ton, but not totally pallid. Tannins have melted away and are only in the background. Still quite a bit of acid. As it sat open, fruit came back to life, with a pop of cherry catching me by surprise. Clean wine with no off flavors as tomato leaf receded a bit. Never quite that heavenly leather/tobacco savoriness, but surprisingly together. Purchased two of these and the first opened in April had gone off. I'd say at $60 total for them, a worthwhile trip back in time. 12% ABV--now that's a number you don't see out of Napa this millenium.

  • So I'm scoring this based on its age and comparison to other 21 year old wines.

Second daughter's birth year. Had the wine for many years and figured now or never.

Opened and the cork was good. Nice seal with little seepage. Let sit for 30 minutes or so. In the glass the color was medium dark ruby. Rim was almost clear. No rust or signs of oxidation. Spice and dark red fruit on the nose. A hint of oak.

In the mouth black pepper, tanins, acid with fruit in balance. Oak influence was almost buttery. Though old, the "Rutherford dust" is present.

Finish is a bit short but the linger is fruit and the pepper.
