Admittedly, I'm late to the party here but this is still excellent. Smooth, fully integrated tannins. The heat from the ABV is still there but not in an offensive way. Long, lingering finish. Excellent example of the McLaren Vale even after 21 years.

Best bottle so far. This went through a porty, stewed fruti phase but that's settled down. A lot more elegant without losing the Mclaren Vale grunt. Cherries, dark chocolate, touch of leather and cloves. Palate much the same with some melted licorice. Still layers of flavours but without the overbearing ripeness. Long, lingering finish.

Decanted for sediment (plenty), returned to bottle and let it slow-O for 5 hours. Medium plum core, transitional ageing but no real bricking. The nose, oh the nose. Baking spices, red and black currants, cinnamon, clove, red floral, vanilla créme, all jump from the glass. One taste confirms the nose: this is simply luscious, a word I'm not sure I've ever used to describe a wine before. Layer upon layer of gilded red and black fruits, glide along a thick, rich river of tannins and balancing acidity making this one of my favourite Aussie examples of this varietal to date. Seamlessly integrated, with depth and breadth to spare. This bottle went through WineBid, then WineCommune, then it sat in my cellar for a year before a certain 10 year old left it next to a portable heater for a month. I let it rest properly for a month after that incident, and opened it to find it was totally unscathed. Remarkable, from 75 year old vines. Drink thru 2015, 14,0% abv, approx $45.

Perfect timing; at its peak; a bit muddy, but great nose and palate; very nice finish.

Past prime. Sweet, bordering on flabby dark fruit.
