Community Tasting Notes (9) Avg Score: 88.9 points

  • Vibrant sweet cherry and plum fruit accompanied by lovely soft tannins. Demonstrates real complexity on the mid-palate developing a rich but subtle almost chocolate-like finish. The freshness and lift offset the sweetness and provide a harmonious balance. Loved it. 92 pts

  • oldest bottle of this i have had yet. nose still shows some clove but more cooked fruit and a real lava terroir for the fist time. smoked stone, not quite as ashy as some other etna reds. palate medium with strong acidity and heat, though less alcoholic seemingly than before. has begun to integrate. fruit has taken a step back but still ample. much more velvety mouth now. probably as good as it will get based on the fading fruit.

  • More mellow than last time. Bright pomegranate fruit, some cloves / spice, but lacking a bit of depth. Serve a bit on the cool side to take alcohol, which may have hurt flavor. Still, well resolved tannins and smooth without becoming glossy.

  • Bright medium ruby. The nose is medium in intensity; very earthy, smoky and sulfurous at first. It eventually opens up a little to reveal a little sour cherry and ripe strawberry. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity, medium, slightly green, tannins and high alcohol (14.5%). The alcohol, however, is perceived as slightly lower. The palate is cleaner, fresher and more intense than the nose, with a medium finish. There appears to be quite a bit of bottle variation, since this did not taste at all like the reviewers below (or like most of the Etna Rossos that I have tried in the last few years). Maybe it would benefit from a decant or from several more years in the bottle.

  • Bright ruby color. Rather reserved on the nose, but sort of intriguing too. There’s some sour cherry and sweet raspberry fruit aromas, but at low volume, and then there’s a very elegant, mysterious outdoorsy character that’s something like wildflowers, lavender, fresh herbs, and pine all mixed together, like taking a deep breath in a meadow or something. And everything becomes more expressive with some air in the glass. On the palate, the intensity is suddenly through the roof, with a blast of super bright sour cherry and raspberry flavors, more cedar/pine spiciness, and some floral flavors on the finish. Amazing how high the acid is for a wine with 14.5% alcohol. It’s also no more than medium bodied, with a transparency about its texture, and has only moderate, slightly green, tannin.

This is good—thought-provoking, well balanced, expressive, easy to drink. And pretty good value too.
