  • Some remarkable depth here.
    Deep ruby in the glass.
Amazing nose of red berries, black cherries, orange peel, chocolate and mint.
The same fruits sing in a big way on the palate, plenty of spice with generous acid and some grippy tannins carrying a subtle tobacco finish. Unbelievable QPR.

  • Appearance: Clear. Ruby core of medium intensity moving to a narrow red meniscus. Tears are present. No evidence of sediment.

Nose: Clean, developing nose with a medium intensity. Well-defined aroma of chocolate, raspberries and red cherries, complemented by an underlying blackberry aroma and subtle tertiary notes of forest floor. Secondary aromas of biscuit and young cheddar cheese characters appear on the rim of the glass if left undisturbed after re-pouring. Chocolate indicates the use of oak. (The biscuit has a very distinct aroma of saos. I didn't trust myself at first; leaving the glass and coming back to it several times - yet it was still there!)

Palate: The wine is dry with medium acidity, medium(+) body, and high alcohol. The tannins are of medium level, are chalky in nature, and long lasting. The flavours have a medium intensity and follow the nose with chocolate, red cherries and raspberries. The flavours change however, with notes of blackberries and black cherries taking over, complemented by forest floor. A subtle cheese character underlies the black fruits on the finish with a medium(+) length. The chocolate flavour provides evidence that oak was used. Biscuit was not detected on the palate.

Conclusion: This is a very good quality wine. The oak complements the fruit well, as do the tertiary aromas and flavours. The flavour profile was confusing at first; the nose built the expectation of a predominately red fruit driven flavour, but presented a more darker profile featuring black fruits. The flavours are concentrated and have great balance with the acidity. Although the alcohol is high, it is completely balanced by the fruit; sitting in the background and only really appearing on the finish. The tannins are chalky and long lasting and work quite well with the underlying cheese characters. The wine has a confusing finish, but is pleasant, with a great length. The wine demonstrates multiple layers of complexity, with primary, secondary, and tertiary aromas and flavours.

This wine drinks well now, but has potential for further ageing due to the level acidity and the concentration of fruit.
