This is a very nice woody grenache as a very nice price. The usual d!Arenburg attention to quality with the fruit on the front palate dominating and good oak finish

Night one: almost raspberry cordial to start, sweet, then molasses and savouriness and spice. Disjointed. A bit hot. I was around 87 on it. Night two: second half of bottle has settled down considerably. Some confectionary but more about the molasses and savouriness and spice. Better balanced, pleasing grip, and enough length. 89

Clear, med intensity Ruby red with hundreds of tiny slow-moving tears. Clean, med intensity, still youthful with aromas of cranberries, strawberries, red cherries, dates, and tomato vine. Dry, med body, med alcohol, med- acidity, med tannins, med intensity with further tastes of cooked plums, raspberries, slight blueberriy, slight espresso, and a hint of black olive and smoked molasses and a med finish. This wine has all the characteristics but none of the finesse.

The nose reminds me of a Spanish Priorat with more ripe red fruits, sweet and earthy spices. Good minerality and freshness but somewhat alcoholic. The spicy and dense palate persisted from entry to finish, which is still austere for now. Full-bodied structure, this is not subtle but it is not in your face in its aromatic presentation either. A degree more forward and fresher than a Priorat. It would benefit from a few more years of development in the bottle to achieve smoother texture. Although it didn’t reach the depth and finesse of the single vineyard Grenchae from Clarendon Hills, it is a worthy effort considering it is a fraction of the cost of a Clarendon Hills. McLaren Vale is clearly a good place for Grenache with a touch of old world charm in Australia. 90-92 pts.
