This was a huge disappointment with an aromatic profile and texture that reminded me more of a cheap Chasselas than an elegant Riesling creature. I couldn’t detect any obvious flaws and thought it might be a very awkward phase but even after a few days there was no improvement. I‘ll try to revisit the wine in six months and hope that it will live up to its reputation.
TN: The highlight here is the structure which is in the „ok-ish“ category but misses the extreme grace the best Riesling boast. The aromatic complexity was rather low with tropical fruit at its core and delivered without much precision. Medium length but mostly hollow palate (which improved after a few days). Positive was the well-balanced tad of sweetness. But overall not harmonious.
Decanting: No decanting needed.

F.X. Pichler Riesling Unendlich full vertical (1998-2017) (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Gabriel Standard Bottle opened ~36h before. Double decanted ~ 10h before drinking. Clear, pale, yellow-golden color. Clean, medium+ intense nose. Very fine and airy notes of ripe yellow fruit, some blossoms and fine herbs. Beautiful. On the palate the high alc is better integrated than in 2017 at the moment. Wonderful notes of orange peel, bitter orange. Great tension. Very defined. Beautiful texture and veery long. Great potential for the upcoming decades. 94++

Regular dinner group (@ JvT): Butter, peach and minerals in the expressive bouquet. On the palate a concentrated wine with butter, apricot, full bodied and elegant acidity. Still extremely youthful, but already showing what it has in store. Truly great wine! 95 - 97
