  • A matter of taste 2024 (Kongresshalle, Zürich): *** Brief notes from wine fair, primarily for my own memory ***
    Glass: Stölzle Universal
Of course way too young, but already approachable. Lots of primary warm fruit, round, balanced and elegant, beautiful texture, long. Needs another decade to fully shine. 94+

  • Immediately upon opening, the 2017 Léoville Las Cases shows characteristic Las Cases mixed blueberry, cassis, and raspberry with a fresh mineral petrichor element. Then it closes down hard, beginning to (begrudgingly) open back up 12 hours later. But during those moments of clarity and articulation, it seems clear that there's a very fine young Las Cases here with good depth for the vintage and a classic style. I can imagine this as a Las Cases somewhat akin to the 1985; a slightly more elegant rendition than usual.

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, 10% Merlot harvested between September 15 and October 4 with an ABV of 13.28% and a pH of 3.72.

  • Dark purple in the glass. Relatively restrained nose - little bit herbal, menthol, and black fruited. High acid and high, blocky tannins. Bit hot on the palate; not overly generous. Struggle to say much about the fruit other than that it was about 80/20 weighted black/red. This is much too young and isn't ready yet; the fruit just seems to be in a bit of an akward spot, for my taste. I'm sure it'll be brilliant in time. 91+++

  • Deep ruby colored. Intense nose with lots of dark berries, mocha and some tobacco. Cassis, blackberries, blueberries, dark plum, soft earthy notes and nice fresh herbal notes on the palate. Medium (+) bodied with a medium intense acidity. Firm tannins, which need more time to integrate. Incredible depth and complexity, multiple fruit layers - astonishing. Very dense and dark structure. In the moment this is a big, fruit driven wine but with some more time it will balance out. Very long and beautiful finish.
Wow, what a lovely classic left bank Bordeaux with a lot of soul and energy. It’s too young but I’m sure that it will be a future legend. 95 points for now, with 10-15 years of age 98+ is possible. Drink 2026 - 2045. (IG)
