  • Bit of browning at the rim suggests it's ready despite some residual tannin. An acidic, fruit-shy food wine that cuts nicely through north Italian cuisine. Always inferior to the well-balanced Brunata in this vintage, and no exception tonight. That said, a solid traditional cru Barolo that ought to have been a little better for 1996.

  • Opened a full 24 hours before service. Still needed some air to pull together, but when it did, a knock-out. Still plum color with a bit of lightening on the edges, fabulous nose with tar, resin, spice, and sour cherry. Tannins still a bit harsh - 21 years later - but the fruit is all there. Classic structure, and good finish. The drinking window on this one is right on. I will not open another till at least 2020. To others who've posted TNs on this wine, I think it will not show well without significant time in a decanter, or for slow-o treatment. Significant time.

  • '96 retrospective at Franny's, Brooklyn

Darker fruited and more approoachable nose than the Brunata, but that said, the nose is still shy, and with less Cannubi perfume than I had hoped for. Stony and still quite tight. Like the Brunate, it has enamel thinning acid and tannins, but maybe dialed down a notch or two. This is more approachable than the Brunata, and I do think it has the requisite parts to become something special in a decade plus. 92+

This flight made me a bit nervous for the rest of the evening, but this was the sole flight I felt was too young to drink.

  • open a half day with small glass poured out to allow for larger surface area to aid in aeration. After 6 hrs, this was in a nice place, though the traditional methods showed thru with firm yet ripe tannins and great acid balance, the overall nature of this wine is not of much obvious fruit, moreso an integrated wine of structual integrity and lean fruit and more earthy qualities. Not much of anything to gain with time.

  • A skeleton with little flesh. Underwhelming effort from a traditionalist producer in a great vineyard and vintage. Save it for rich, creamy, fatty fare, but don't expect improvement.
