  • 25th anniversary dinner with Rainer Schnaitmann and Thomas Haag (Kriegsbergterasse, Stuttgart): *** just for my own memory ***
    Glass: Zalto Universal
Popped and poured, not decanted. Slowly starts reaching its first drinking window, but still a teen. Give it 5+ years to fully shine. Has all potential to become a fantastic Kabinett. 90-91+

  • No detailed notes taken, but this was a superb young kabinett. Rather fruity but with a great structure and backbone of minerality and acidity.

  • Light greenish yellow. Herbs, flowers, and citrus. Minimal spritz. Light, off dry, succulent apple, orange peel, and slate all backed by fine acidity. A crackling, approachable young Kabinett.

This held up without a bit of decay over the next 2 days.

  • Hmm, this is lovely. Nose starts shy, with fermentation aromas, spiced orchard fruit, grapefruit. On the palate this is a delight: wonderful depth of fruit with candied oranges, some lemon cordial and plenty of tangy acidity bouncing of the sweetness and purity of the citrus. Wunderbar!

  • 8% alcohol. Tasted blind among 46 other 2017 Riesling Kabinetts in Kabinett Cup 2017.

Youthful and quite concentrated neon green color. Somewhat restrained and slightly sweet-toned nose with aromas of honey, some sappy herbal tones and a little bit of vegetal greenness. The wine feels full-bodied, rich and concentrated on the palate with quite sweet overall taste and flavors of lemon marmelade, some apple jam, a little bit of exotic spice and a hint of sappy herbal character. The wine feels quite weighty - even somewhat heavy - for a Kabinett with only medium-to-moderate acidity. The finish is lively, very ripe and medium-sweet with intense flavors of saline minerality, lemony citrus fruits, some steely character, a little bit of wet stones, light apple jam tones, a hint of apricots and a touch of bittersweet blood orange.

A bold, concentrated and quite weighty yet sruprisingly stylish Kabinett that seems to be more about power and richness than about the typical delicate expression of Kabinett Riesling. The wine shows good depth of flavor and it is quite accessible for a young Kabinett, but it really could be a wee bit lighter and use some higher acidity. Pretty good and enjoyable stuff, but not among the top wines of the evening. More suitable for early-drinking purposes than most of the wines tasted in this event. It scored a total of 5 points from the 12 judges, making it finish in 25th place out of 46 wines.
