opened and served immediately- enjoyed over a 3 hour dinner.
light bright lemon color, at first the nose was reluctant on details but clearly of a grand scale, sweet thick citrus fruits, a light floral note, spicy oak and pears, on the palate a wonderful flowing saline quality throughout, as with the nose- the palate did not want to share any secrets but still could not hide the generous volume, not the largest scale Drouhin Montrachet I have had- but definitely tending in that direction, lovely cream and marzipan textures layered with sweet citrus, pear and apple fruits, a fine stony note to give it some grounding; and all of this leading in a lengthy and layered lime-driven finish that is just the least bit warm on the tail end, over time the wine became quite spicy and very reluctant to reveal even the delights it showed at first opening, on the sweeter and riper side overall- and so while it is an excellent example, it is a bit more unwieldy than the more classic vintages I favor, cream textures already out there in full force along with the primary citrus- but even so there is a lot yet to be revealed, Drouhin Montrachet is often a wine you can get away with opening young- but the 2018 is not as generous in its youth as this wine usually tends to be, a good long wait ahead- at least a decade.

Joseph Drouhin Dinner (Medlar (London)): Absorbing the oak already better than the Clos Mouche tasted next to it. Wow - so lovely already! Buttery, balanced, citrus but not sharp, yuzu on the palate, smells like a fruit orchard. Lingering for a very long finish. I could drink a bottle of this now. Should be a tremendous wine. 94-96 point potential?

Joseph Drouhin Cellar Visit and Tasting with Vero (Beaune): Barrel tasting at the domaine. Vero went above and beyond the call of duty here, assembling a taste from all four parcels that will compose the final assemblage. Some bâtonnage had been conducted on two of the barrels recently, so the wine was ever-so-slightly yeasty/ cloudy. That aside, this wine showed ripe apple and candied lemon with very exciting structure for this vintage. Excellent power and weight with wonderful balance. Absolutely standout, with 94-95 point potential.
