  • probably waited too long on this, but was interested n seeing how the Margaret River cabs aged - good fill and intact cork - dark red with brick rim and just a touch of orange - simple nose of solid old cabernet fruit, but not much complexity - full rounded mouth with good weight and very pleasant taste - moderately long finish - very nice as a food wine - good showing for a 24-year-old Australian cab, but lack of development of complex esters was disappointing - would not show well against similarly aged Bordeaux, or even California cabs

  • NobleRottersSydney - Margaret River v Coonawarra (Alio's, Surry Hills): {cork, 14%} What were Leeuwin doing in their red vineyards in the early 90s? Despite being a promisingly opaque garnet colour, this is one of the greenest red wines I’ve ever sniffed. Any olfactory hints to the age are swamped by the green capsicum and asparagus aromas. These grapes may have been sugar ripe, but that’s all. On the palate the green fruit blooms quickly and fades fast. Lots of dusty astringent green-grape tannins; here’s one occasion where some appreciable sweet oak would be welcome to offset the unripe fruit. Short, low-intensity finish. From what is supposed to be a top estate this does the winery (and the region) no favours at all.

  • NobleRottersSydney - Margaret River v Coonawarra (Lucio's, Paddington): {14.0%} I sometimes feel I can write the note for Leeuwin Cabernet without even tasting the wine, such has been its consistency over the years. Aromas are at the very greenest end of the cabernet spectrum – like someone threw asparagus, capsicum and herbs all together in a blender. The palate is a little less polarizing; of medium weight, tannins are soft, acidity somewhat prominent though. It doesn’t taste unripe, and in fact carries the alcohol quite well, but if you’re addicted to the lusciously-fruited, blueberry-milkshake style of new world cabernet, then you won’t like it at all… Nowhere really to improve I don’t think, but tastes like it could stay this way forever – the style almost seems to transcend the aging process.
