Okay, so this is still a relative baby, but with decanting, it was approachable with food over two evenings. Dark-fruiited, tannic and oaky, but well-balanced overall between these elements. It should be excellent in 3-5+ years. Still fun, and enjoyable, to taste it young. The 2019 vintage seems to be living up to the hype from the few bottles I've decided to crack so far.

Decanted 10 hours. Opened up about 8 hours in. Gorgeous expression of St. Emilion. The highly complex integration of Merlot really shines through. Suggest pairing with smoky meats or cheeses.

Monbousquet's typical blend (written on the back label year after year) is 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 18+ months in new French oak, the Château's 2019 Grand Vin is an opaque crimson, medium-to-full-bodied wine that flaunts an aromatic profile of dark bramble fruits, kirsch, graphite, tobacco, licorice and savory herbs. Freshly acidic and without alcoholic heat (14.5%), it delivers flavors mirroring the nose, adding a generous aliquot of spicy oak. The tannins are plentiful, pervasive and still quite angular at this early stage, overshadowing the fruit on the dense mid-palate and lengthy finish. Give this some time in the cellar so that the tannins and oak can better integrate. I suspect that it will merit a higher score if it fleshes out as anticipated. Tasted over three hours from a bottle that was decanted through a Vinturi aerator, it clearly benefited from the first couple of hours in carafe. Drink 2027-2044.

30 min decant. Deep dark ruby color. Tomato leaf, coffee, cassis, black cherry, basil, persimmon, apple, and slate. Smooth, dry, full bodied palate. Firm, full, lower intensity tannins on the longish finish.
Everyone guessed this was a Syrah when I initially poured it. It really needed an hour or two decant, but it’s certainly in its drinking window now.
