Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 95.3 pts. and median of 95 pts. in 11 notes)

Tasted by Medo on 11/19/2009 & rated 95 points: This was infanticide, for sure. But it was a very delicious one. A pretty shining light gold in the glass. The nose shows very distinct flavors of noble honey, pineapple, honeydew, sweet peaches and even a touch of banana. No doubt about the quality of this wine on the nose. In the mouth this was finest Nahe Riesling Auslese style! Layers of honey covered pineapples, cherries, cassis, ripe peaches and a fine swinging minerality were dancing Mambo on my tongue. And the best of all: the gorgeous balance between the sweetness, the acidity and the fruits. This is a dessert as its own. With an aftertaste of nearly a minute this Auslese burns itself directly in your brain. I'm glad that I bought a couple of bottles of this stuff for only 25€ / half bottle. Drink or hold for ever. What you prefer. (143 views)
Tasted by al-Zabba on 10/12/2009: Ohhhh, Donnhoff...lovely in all of its mouth-coating glory. Ben's right, the finish on this could last for days!!! (And that's a gift to be treasured!) (400 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 10/12/2009: Drinking the final bottle of this vintage with Lindsay. Can't tell if its the gold capsule or not. I thought I bought the regular, but the capsule is indeed gold.

Let me try this another (WSET) way: now open eight hours. Clear gold medium color. Fault free nose with medium + intensity (although I could see others going medium). Notes of melon, pineapple, apricot, peach finished with a clove and leesy note. I want to say honey but I think hay hits it better.

Its off-dry, which is to say that you can't really tell that it is auslese its so damn balanced with its acidity. Its medium acidity, which only says (again!) that it is so damn balanced and in harmony you don't feel how sweet and acidic it really is. One thing I have noticed from when I started is that the finish is clipping a little -- its shorter than it was 8 hours ago (when it probably lasted for two minutes). I think this says the wine is young and is showing off a mid-age shutting down sequence. I feel no perceptable alchohol and it is indeed low.

I can hear my WSET teacher say "this has high sugar so be careful when describing the body" (and I mean no offense to her here, just using her to explain my thought. As this has opened the body has put on weight and I don't think I am confusing weight with sugar. I would say this is medium + or full body and the flavors or medium + to pronouced. The length is shorter (at this moment, see above) but the body is massive. I would not that massive in this sense does not mean weighty.

My conclusions: quality is outstanding, it fits at its premium price, it can be drunk now or cellared. Note the comment on the finish as I think this might indicate something to its aging potential.

I ended up giving the bottle the five day test: richly mushroom, dense, robust, and alive. (393 views)

Tasted by rnellans on 7/15/2009 & rated 98 points: Wonderful aromas of peach and citrus. Great flavors with nice fresh acidity on the back end. Very long on the palate. Great wine. (669 views)
Tasted by peblin on 12/16/2008 & rated 98 points: Systembolaget Superpremium (Vinkällarbolaget): Golden, yellow, dense color.
Inviting, lovely, fresh nose of nectar, botrytis, "freshness", peach, citrus, apples.
Wonderfully sweet, filling taste with great tingling Mosel-like acidity to balance the wine into a fresh and full-bodied experience. Incredibly nice fruit. An absolutely lovely wine. (1243 views)
Tasted by salil on 12/4/2008 & rated 97 points: A night of Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle at Trestle on Tenth (NYC): From magnum (thanks Robert!), and absolutely spectacular with soaring aromas of honey, flowers, red fruits, pineapple, spices and rocky minerals - I found the aromatic profile surprisingly similar to the 06 Dellchen Auslese. Each sip drenches the mouth in honeyed cherry, peach and pineapple flavours, with savoury nutty, earthy and stony mineral elements underneath. Finishes incredibly long. Very primary now but a real pleasure-bomb with incredible precision, elegance and depth. My favourite of the night, absolutely stunning. (1220 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 12/4/2008 & rated 91 points: Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Vertical (Trestle on Tenth): Shows very well, rich but defined. (1384 views)

Tasted by Otto Nieminen on 8/27/2008: 8,5% abv. A very forward, expressive and ripe nose, very tropical (pineapple) and just like the Spätlese, this shows a more red toned fruit and spicier character - more extrovert, more obvious - than the Oberhäuser Brücke. Full bodied and would pass for a Beerenauslese, sweet, good phenolic grip but could do with brighter acidity IMO. But it is a nice wine. (1349 views)
Tasted by Anonymous on 11/28/2007: takes every ounce of discipline not to down the entire bottle in one gulp. light, pale yellow. a ripe orchard and fresh garden served up on a bed of slate with a splash of citrus. exceptional. (1669 views)

(Donnhoff Niederhauser Hermannshohle Auslese) Huge, eneveloping nose of minerals, botrytis and red fruits. Palate was very vivid tangerine fruit flavors along with pure and clean botrytis and amazing elegance, sap and concentration. A world beater of an Auslese.

As a help to those who purchase and cellar these wines, let it be noted that the 'Goldkapsule' does not designate a higher quality bottling from the producer Dönnhoff. Herr Dönnhoff uses gold capsules on all bottlings of certain richer wines from the vineyards Oberhauser Brücke and Niederhauser Hermannshöhle and perhaps some others. Therefore it is unneccessary and misleading to use the term 'Goldkapsule' with Dönnhoff wines, currently.
