A powerful, spicy Barolo which only really started to assert its tannins around 2 hours in. Was a perfect pairing for braised beef cheek and polenta. Really enjoyable wine, and absolutely no crime to open now. I’ve heard 2017 described as a restaurant vintage and this bottle is a good example of that.

Checking in on the first of these. Bottle opened at 12- decanted at 5 and served at 6:30 tasted at each stage. At first extremely tart and thin with pronounced wood on the nose so I was glad I gave this time to get up to speed. By 5pm the wood had blown off and the classic young Barolo nose of roses and tar was there and also tar red fruits and drying grippy tannins on the palate. At 7pm it really hit its stride and filled out with a full cherry fruit in the mid palate. Towards the end the tannins grew even more pronounced. This bottle needs plenty of air and serving to accompany rich food- it was at its most alluring when accompanying the rib eye steaks this evening. Glad I checked in and lots to enjoy as a young Barolo- definitely wait 2-3 years for the next one.

Followed this young Barolo for a few days. Tasted in a Zalto Burgundy glass. The bouquet started with forest strawberries but soon more herbal notes and other red fruits (cherries, raspberries) develop in the glass as well as crushed limestone and roses. Developing at a glacial pace, this Barolo needs at least another 5 years to start to bloom. Not as amazing as the 2016, but still an excellent Barolo with a lot of potential for at least 2 decades.

Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): This is a blend from many vineyards. The first thing that jumps out are the tannins which are a bit harder here and very grippy and intense. Darker red fruits. This is a wine of pure power.
