The '16 Mondoca is a promising young Barolo. It comes across as a particularly old-school, classic Barolo, but the texture of the wine shows good finesse, so it is already drinking pretty well today.
On the nose, I found sweet red roses, leather, smoke, tar, orange peel, and spices, with just a touch of dark red fruit. The aromatics are on the savory, masculine side for a young Nebbiolo. On the palate, the '16 is medium to full in body with medium to high acidity and a high level of tannin, but the tannins are fine grained and so don't get in the way too much. The flavor profile is again on the savory side, with dried roses, iron, leather, and sweet spices.
It'll be interesting to see how this wine ages. It's very much on the savory side for a young wine, but seems structurally built for long aging.
