Cleaning out some old bottles to prepare for a few purchases. Yes, probably past its prime, if this wine ever had a prime, but very quaffable. Still a lovely garnet color. A lot of sediment. Served with a bit of a chill, maybe 55 degrees. After 20 minutes, a nose of granite and chocolate, with a hint of strawberry licorice. Blackberry, earthy mushrooms and minerality on a slightly lush and silky body. The alcohol heat, acidity and oakiness I found in this wine years ago is completely integrated. Short, clean finish. I would love to know if this could develop further with some air, but we all finished our glasses rather quickly, and moved to 2008 version of this wine, which didn't show as well. Wondered about if and how to score this wine, since it is well past what was probably considered its drinking window, but if I could buy a case of this for the $10/bottle or so I probably paid for it years ago, I would. Certainly more pleasant than a few recent California Pinot Noirs I've had (looking at you Rodney Strong...).

This Morgon is very basic and gives hint of classic Beaujolais at a price point that is hard to find in the US. It has ruby red color of a pinot with a faint nose of strawberries. On the palette the strawberries are detectable with a hint or orange. The wine is light and suitable for a summer lunch or dinner. We had it with Salmon and it was a nice change to a grape (Gamey) we don't drink much. But for a few dollars more I would rather have a Marcel Lapierre! The 2006 is drinking well now and will last through 2011.

I've been fascinated with Beaujolais crus lately, so tonight it was time to visit Morgon. Chocolate-covered candied cherries on the nose. Light body, medium (but integrated) tannins, and a lively acidity. On the palate, this is bursting with flavor - a total blackberry bomb. Almost to the point of being one-dimensional - this tastes like someone just crushed a handful of blackberries into a glass. There's a hint of minerality and earth here, but not nearly as much as some of the other crus I've had. Definitely a step up from Beaujolais AOC, but not a mindblower. Just a great summer quaffer. $14

All present and correct, no bananas, fresh and full of silky gamay fruit, but not exciting
