Certainly in the tertiary phase. Strong notes of leather/tobacco but still a very pleasant drinking experience for an “off” vintage of almost 40 years. Drink up and enjoy as this won’t be getting any better.

Charleston VII; 11/2/2022-11/6/2022 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Very much split the crowd. For some this was an off bottle and I can see that. When it was first poured the nose was very muted. To me it was more just a bit of shock (we'd driven for four hours earlier and I think wine needs some time to come back to itself). In the glass it opened up and the nose gave a bit more and I actually thought it was quite enjoyable.

Saturday hangout at Domaine (Chicago, IL): Wow, I never thought I'd cross paths with this again. Anyway, this seemed to be much better than a previous bottle of this over ten years ago. Some clear pyrazine notes on the nose. The palate's got some very nice dried tart red fruit that doesn't feel it's as old as it is. Fully resolved, it's time to drink this up. I have a hard time seeing how this would continue to improve in the cellar.

Interesting and complex with dried tobacco, dried herbs, minerals with the mature plum fruit. But more lean and fruit is now gone, so it's time to drink up.
