  • Classic Wendouree looking half it's age, how do they do it? Vibrant ruby colour that's only just lost its purple.

Cool climate Cabernet with a balance between ripe blackcurrant and blackberries and fresh notes of eucalyptus, slightly green capsicum, cedar and a whiff of tobacco. Fine-grain tannins are barely noticeable for the first couple of sips but they build in the mouth.

Quite closed at first but opened nicely with time and air. Beautiful drinking now but has a long life ahead of it.

  • For cabernet, quite powerful. The fruit has intensity with blueberry, blackberry, cedar and mocha. There is a long finish that is quite dry. The acidity is refined, and the tannins are just on the dusty side. There is a good texture that makes this interesting and enjoyable. In my view the wine has some legs, but I only had a single bottle so that is just idle speculation on my part.

  • Not my favourite vintage of Wendouree Cabernet but still has all the Wendouree hallmarks. Has great rusticity, smells and tastes of the bush with dark fruit, licorice, olives and quite a whack of oak which is possibly a little heavy handed. Quite plush in terms of texture and concentration, I have a feeling this could be better in a few more years but perhaps just a bit out of balance to make it really good.

  • A lot more open for business than most Wendouree reds I've had to date, and this is young by their standards. Decanted for 2 hours, so that helped. Fine dusty tannins underneath some nice, smooth blackberry fruit, but strong american oak seemed to mask a lot of the varietal character for me.
I know this was probably drunk too young, but that's just what I've been told about Wendouree reds in general - if I had to guess, I'd say this was as good as this wine will get. And I've certainly had more explosive, more powerful and balanced Cabernets for half of the price and none of the hassle. Yet to be convinced.
