  • 96 & 98 side-by-side. Decanted for ~7 hours. This was the more structured and linear of the two wines. Classic with Serralunga power and stature. Not yet at peak, particularly compared to the open-for-business 1998. Upside from here.

  • Still pretty youthful save for the tannins, which were well-resolved and had turned into a large amount of sediment. Decanted and then started upon after around 15 minutes.

At first the acidity was dominant and the aromas were very herbal. After a couple of hours of air the nose became broader and sweeter, emphasising more of a strawberry note than the redcurrant-type fruit that predominated for the first period, and wet metal, ash and damp earth came through. The palate was even more fruit-forward, with some hints of coffee and game on the finish. Tasty, and an excellent accompaniment to pork loin tagliata.

  • After a disappointing 1999 and a 1996 Rocche that was a shadow of what I hoped, I was worried about this wine. The nose showed pure cherry with notes of underbrush and leather with the typical dried rose petal. There is a ferrous mineral quality to the fine tannin on the finish that marks this site for me. Ready to go but will surely last if you want it to go all tertiary. This was double-decanted about 3 hours prior to consumption.

  • 1996 is a mystical vintage in Barolo.. you never know when it will be ready to show at its best, and this bottle is not different.. on the open not much was showing on the nose, my initial though was this was still close, maybe too young.. the overall balance is there and the palate is well structured, with a gentle but sandy tannin that surely tells you this wine can go on for many more years... BUt honestly My initial feeling was disappointment, decided to double decant and left it in the bottle to breath for a few hours.. this helped things to come in place.. but still overall I think more time in the bottle could help show better the character of this sleeping beauty.

The game here is all about elegance, finesse, balance... My nose is constantly drawn back to the glass, everything is there, but I am left with a feeling of wanting more of it.. there is loads of fruit, a dark complexity, sweetness on the nose from time to time, some leather towards the end, but never enough, like a mistress starting to show her self but nothing happens in the end... I am tempted to think that if you catch her in the right mood or maybr simply with time she will show herselft in full, this is not tonight unfortunately, and trust me I have been patient.

The palate is soft with a gentle tannin and a medium body feeling, elegant, with acidity perfectly balanced. I now understand the comment from user VULGAR LITTLE MONKEY. Agree with him on 94, but potentially a 95+ if you get lucky

  • Of the 1996 Langhe wines tonight, this was the youngest showing, not surprisingly. That being said, it is in a window of drinkability, I just think it could get better. You feel the structure the most here. There are also more brown notes. By that I mean leather, baking spices, tree bark, all sorts of stuff. This shows less floral notes than the other wines, but does pack a decent bit of fruit. I think this would suit the right dishes just fine now but may come together even better in 2-3 more years. Close enough to swing away if you want.
