This is rather enjoyable, very spicy and silky, with red fruits aplenty; strawberries, ripe cherries, five spice. It’s showing just a touch of development, reflecting that these 05s are probably gonna last for a long time. Really deep ruby core here and classically Hudelot Noellat. My feeling is this will be hitting its peak in a couple years.

Boxing day at Caroline's: Wow wouldn’t have pegged this as an ‘05; this was so inviting and giving. Clearly a Vosne with the silky and ethereal texture, someone managed to impressively nail the producer. H-N is always an iron fist in a pretty, velvet glove - an impressive backbone and concentration behind bright, seductive red fruit. Second of the night for me.

At first this shows a distinctly dark, somber fruit profile of plum, black cherry and almost elderberry on the nose with violet, mineral and spice coming into focus after about 10 minutes in the glass or so. This opens up to some nice mulling spice and floral perfume, revealing more freshness and delineation with air time. Good intensity with an extra richness held in reserve in '05.

Casual Red Burgundies (La Mangeoire): Nice nose, a touch green but clearly very juicy. Big and rich on the palate. Great acid provides for a big finish. The fruit strikes and expands very nicely. Severe tannins on it at this point. Probably put this away for some time.

After tasting so many 2005s that are so soft and elegant they practically have the personality of Snuggles the Fabric-Softener Bear, it's almost a relief to come across one that puts up as much resistance as this. Contrary to the silken tannins that seem to characterize the vintage at many addresses, the tannins here are so dry and forceful they seem to suck the moisture out of your mouth like a vacuum, yet the sensation doesn't compromise the wine's drinkability since the austere tannins are combined with an acidity that feels almost juicy. Food is essential to enjoy this, and it doesn't show anything besides structure and fruit (none of the spiciness of Vosne-Romanee), but it provides refreshing drinking over a long dinner and the bottle drains faster than you'd expect from a wine that seems to be doing its best to turn away.
