  • Popped and let breathe for about 1.5 hours before consumption and with 15 minutes in the glass on top of that, this was drinking stupendously. Give it a little time and enjoy, but still has a long life ahead of it.

  • Marengo’s 2006 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is quite striking in this vintage. The wine possesses an extra degree of roundness and richness than normal – which serves to smooth some of the edginess that can be present at times – while still maintaining a delicate personality. The tannins are firm yet nicely integrated as sweet red berries, flowers, spices and mint linger on the elegant close. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2026.

Marco Marengo is one of Piedmont’s emerging superstar producers. Although the Marengo family has made wine here since 1899, it’s as if someone turned on a switch a few years ago, when the wines – the Barolos in particular – went from excellent to outstanding, a level they have maintained ever since. Marengo’s 2007s are every bit as promising as these 2006s, if not a touch deeper.

  • Importer tasting (@ PA): Beautiful combination of a rustic as well as elegant style. This was the most elegant one of the three wines I tasted of this domain. Beside all the Barolo characteristics the red fruits are dominant in this wine. Soft tannin structure. Wait 6+ years.

  • Robert Houde Wines Portfolio feat. Marc De Grazia selections (Ritz-Carlton, Chicago IL): nose: expressive and lovely nose of licorice, strawberries, lots of roasted herbs, spices and softer tones of red cherries. Has a very perfumed quality on the nose

taste: very pretty medium feel with medium/high acidity and tones of licorice, strawberries, roasted herbs, red cherries and a touch of roses creep in. Noticeable, but smooth tannins exist right now

overall: Will certainly need to age, and this is and should be a real beauty of a barolo. There is a freshness to it that is enticing and captivating that really brings you in. Very aromatic with great balance on both the nose and palate, this will develop well
