Flight 1 - Dinner at Auprès du Clocher (4 Notes)

  • 2007 Bouchard Père et Fils Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières Domaine 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (4/20/2013)

A little shy and indistinct at first but once this opened up it gained precision on both the nose and palate. Citrus, mineral and a touch of exotic fruit on the nose and palate with excellent acidity and tension. This was like a blend of Chablis and Meursault. Drink or hold. Excellent.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Initial 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (4/20/2013)

Disgorged November 7, 2011. Beautiful earthy nose of charred lemons, baked apple, toast and salted caramel. Focused on the palate with lively acidity but the soft mousse and texture give the mouthfeel an elegant and finessed profile. This never seems to disappoint. Outstanding.

  • 2010 Domaine Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    (4/20/2013)

Sulphur dominated the nose at first but most of it blew off quickly leaving gunflint, lemon, apple and sea breeze notes. Nice weight on the palate with good acidity and a softer minerally finish. This was quite expressive at first but seems to have tightened up a bit on the nose. Should improve with a few years of age. Excellent. 90+

  • 1999 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

    (4/20/2013)

Rustic and funky nose at first but that blew off revealing underlying notes of iron and ripe (almost roasted) cherries. Decently structured with solid acidity and finer tannins but this seems more forward than the bottle I had last year at the Domaine, which was fresher, less ripe/roasted, and much more enjoyable. Still a decent drink but the softness and roasted character of this bottle is a bit concerning to me.

Flight 2 - Selosse Shootout (4 Notes)

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Premier Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Mareuil-sur-Ay Sous le Mont 88 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (4/21/2013)

Darkest wine (besides the Rose). 100% pinot noir. Disgorged January 25, 2012 – Baked apple nose with some salted caramel notes. Soft and lighter mousse with decent acidity and a richer mouthfeel. This had the least amount of acidity, complexity and precision and for my palate won’t get any better with age. Very good.

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger Les Carelles 92 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (4/21/2013)

Lightest in colour. 100% chardonnay. Disgorged April 13, 2011 – This was the most expressive off the hop with baked pear and fresh orchard fruit. Despite the baked pear notes the nose with quite fresh. On the palate this was noticeable less rich than the Sous le Mont with more precision yet the sweetest fruit. The mousse is lively yet soft with really solid acidity and nice palate freshness (even with the sweeter fruit profile) and a good dose of minerality. Finishes quite dry. I think this one will a few years to show its best. Excellent. 92+

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Lieux-dits Extra Brut Ambonnay Le Bout du Clos 93 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

    (4/21/2013)

Medium straw colour. 80% pinot noir, 20% chardonnay. Disgorged April 17, 2012 – Interesting nose of sulphur, damp wood and beautiful orchard fruit. As this sat in the glass the sulphur blew off and the nose began to open up offering complex and interesting aromas. In mouth this was quite elegant and focused without the richness and weight that I usually expect from high percentage pinot noir Champagne. The longer this sat in the glass the better, deeper and more complex it got. Grand Cru white Burg with bubbles. Give this some time. Fantastic. 93+

  • NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rosé 94 Points

    France, Champagne

    (4/21/2013)

Light copper colour. Disgorged May 16, 2012 – great nose. Earthy nose of mushroom, red apples, cranberries with beautiful savory notes too. Energetic and linear on the palate with great acidity and a tart and powerful finish. This offers a lot of muscle yet remains perfectly balanced and precise. As this sat in the glass it became my favorite wine of the evening. A Brilliant Rose.

Flight 3 - Domaine des Comtes Lafon (10 Notes)

  • 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Uchizy Les Maranches 87 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Uchizy

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Spritzy and lemon fruit nose. On the palate a tad ripe with medium weight and really nice acidity. Dry and slightly austere finish. Fresh and simple. Good.

  • 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette 88 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Chardonnay

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Aged in 600L demi-muid. Less expressive nose here but more richness and weight on the palate with nice citrus and orchard fruits. Not quite as much acidity as the previous wine but still a good bit and nothing to complain about. A step up for me even though the nose was a little shy today. I’d hold this for a few years. Very good. 88+

  • 2011 Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine Clos du Four 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Mâconnais, Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Lovely nose of lime and green apple with a hint of lees and pear. The most precise on the palate yet with perfectly balanced weight, excellent acidity and tart and fresh finish. Lime and minerality on the back end. Most complex of these three Macon whites. Drink now and for another 5-7 years. Excellent. 90+

  • 2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Recently bottled. Very youthful on the nose and there’s this weird chemical/plastic note that’s quite distracting. Richer mouthfeel yet still fresh and nimble with riper citrus and apple flavours. Nice acidity with a good dose of lime and minerality on the finish. The nose is a bit weird to me at this stage but this was recently bottled so I’ll chalk it up to that. Give this a few years. Very good. 89+

  • 2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Porusots 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Recently bottled. Lafon rents half of the vineyard from new American investors and the other half goes to Roulot. Once again a youthful nose of lime leaf, apple and a hint of spicy wood. Lively and fresh on the palate with vibrant acidity with citrus and stone flavours. Like the Clos de la Barre, a blast of lime and minerality on the finish. This is really pleasant already and should drink well for many, many years. A terrific young wine. 90+

  • 2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Bottled three week ago. Similar lime leaf nose with a touch of spicy wood, lemon zest and floral. Weightier on the palate then the Poruzots but maintains excellent vibrancy and lift with excellent acidity and a tart, limestone driven finish. A good bit of tension and minerality going on as well. Needs a few years. Excellent. 91+

  • 2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Recently bottled. Similar nose once again (lime leaf, citrus, touch of spicy wood) but here there is a bit more complexity with pineapple (maybe even the skin of pineapple as the note is not tropical or ripe in anyway) and crushed wet stones. On the palate this has loads of acidity and freshness with a lengthy salted lime finish. Precise and focused with minerality and stony notes as well. For me a good deal better than the Genevrieres. This is incredibly good right now but should age and improve (depending on how you like your white Burgs) for a few decades (assuming no premox). Outstanding. 93+

  • 2011 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. From barrel. Hasn't been racked, on lees since harvest, Will be blended/bottled in a few weeks. Floral nose with a ripe but restrained profile of dark pinot fruit. Sappy and cooler dark fruits on the palate with excellent freshness and solid acidity. Lighter in body and showing some elegance. Decent length on the spicy finish. Quite enjoyable right now but my only complaint is that it’s a little lean on the mid palate (this is nit-picking). I’d give this 5-7+ before popping a bottle. (90-93).

  • 2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Touch of sulphur on the nose that didn’t quite detract from the beautiful notes of dark raspberries, spice, licorice and violets. More weight and concentration than the 2011 with firmer structure and plenty of acids. Quite long on the finish. This has loads of potential that will probably need 15-20 years to show. A superb young wine. 92+

  • 2009 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Picked the first week of September. Really nice nose of lime, pear and a hint of hazelnuts. No sense of over ripeness on the nose at all. Solid weight without being heavy with minerality and acidity adding lift and energy. A hint of pineapple on the finish. I’d never guess this to be a ’09 if tasted blind. Very Charmes like. Should be great in a few years. Excellent. 91+

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Tight nose at first showing lemon and saline notes. Richer mouthfeel with decent acidiy. After it warmed up and got some air it opened up a bit but never really hit the heights I’m used to from Raveneau. Shows vintage and vineyard typicity. Give this time. Very good. 89+

  • 2007 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Decanted for 45min. Ahh, much better. Compared to the 2009 Blanchot, this had more saline, more precision, more acidity and more freshness. Lighter on the palate but with real depth and beautiful lemon and saline notes. Hard to resist now, so decant for a few hours, or keep your hands off for another 3-5 years at least. Excellent. 92+

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

    (4/22/2013)

Nice nose but way too young. Pure pinot nose, hints of wood. Shows some delicacy on the palate with good acidity. Needs 5 years. Very good. 88+

  • 2010 Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

Youthful nose with bits of wood, darker fruits and hints of chalk. This a big boy Chambolle with loads of structure and a masculine profile. Well balanced with lots of potential but this was not designed to be drunk in its youth. Give this 10+ years. Excellent. 90+

  • 2010 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    (4/22/2013)

This had a much prettier nose than the 2010 Meo Feusselottes with perfumey notes off dark raspberries and spice. Very pure and precise with fine tannins and great acidity. While this is wonderful now in a youthful way, this truly needs 7-10+ years at least to reach its potential. Excellent. 92+

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

    (4/23/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Just bottled. First thing you get on the nose is a green/stem note following by some lovely Vosne spice and dark red fruit. Also a bit green on the palate. Again, this doesn't look promising to my palate.

Tasted at the Domaine. Very nice nose, hints of vosne spice, slightly tight but showing hints of its glory. Beautiful texture and very pure with great acidity and fine but firm tannins. Tart raspberry flavours. Excellent length. Give this 7-10 years. Slightly closed today but has 92-94pt potential.

    (4/23/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Gorgeous nose. Very open, with nice funk, maturing riper red fruits and developing beautifully. Hint of Asian spice. Excellent acidity with powdery tannins and good length. There is a touch of over ripeness but it’s quite subtle. Approachable now but should drink well and continue to develop for another 10+ years. Excellent. 92+

    (4/23/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. 30% new oak, 15% stainless. Floral/mineral nose. Fresh mouthfeel, good citrus, floral, mineral finish. Good, but not as good as the 2008, and doesn’t have the tension that the ’08 has either. Good.

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Bit darker, some savory notes with hints of wood/meat/spice. Quite structured with drying tannins. Good length. Seems very masculine coming after the Cras. Nice acidity and firm tannins. Needs 10+ years. Very good now and should improve. Very good. 89+

    (4/23/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Similar nose, touch more wood on this, spice and darker red fruits. Redder fruit on palate and touch more elegance than the Perrieres it seems. Finishes firm and dry. Excellent acidity. Again, needs 10+ years to show its full (91-94pt) potential. Excellent. 90+

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Darker fruits, hint of Asian spice, touch of wood, good acidity, more approachable than the Murgers. This is quite extracted with chewy tannins. Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Sulphur on the nose and was tough to get underneath it here. Palate showing a lot more with good weight, a decent amount of oak showing, with smoky spice. Solid acidity. Good materials here but tough to get a full grasp on this CV at this time. Should be excellent to outstanding with a proper 15-20 years in the cellar. No rating.

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

    (4/23/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. From half bottle. Shy nose, some oak showing through with some light floral. On the palate very nice, dark red pinot fruit, firm yet powdery tannins, well-structured and great acidity. A silky yet crunchy mouthfeel. Finish is very long and persistent. Despite the shyness on the nose, this was quite enjoyable even at this infant state as the purity and texture are incredible. Mid 90s potential, just needs 15-20 years. Excellent. 92+

    (4/23/2013)

Tasted at the Domaine. Served blind. Closed at first but opened up offering spice, perfume and dark cherry fruit. Rounder on the palate with decent acid and freshness. Has a chalky and lengthy finish. This seems to have already begun to shed some of its baby fat but still shows the vintage in the suppleness of the mouthfeel. Having said that, there is also an added freshness that I didn’t pick up when I first tasted the 09s. Excellent. 91+

  • 2009 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (4/23/2013)

From magnum. Riper orchard fruits with richer citrus but has excellent tension and acidity which keeps the wine lively and fresh. Classical example of producer over vintage as this shows more Roulot than ’09 which is what I look for in these kind of vintages. Drinking very well now in a youthful fashion but should cruise for years. Excellent.

From magnum. This had a beautiful nose that screamed ’93 all the way through. Sweat and savoury red fruits with loads of earth, tobacco and leathery goodness. Really pleasant on the palate with cherry and cedar notes. Powerful and long. From this magnum, I’d say this is just starting to creep into its early drinking window but this has a long and tremendous future. Excellent. 92+

This was tight and very young showing some wood, red fruits and floral notes. Well-structured and needs quite a bit of time to show its potential. Very good. 89+

This showed a lot of similarities to Coche with its sulphur/gun flint nose and beautiful tension on the palate. Some dry extract here along with citrus and acid. Really nice but needs a few years. Excellent. 90+

Loads of floral, lime and hints of apple with a pure and precise profile. This has plenty of acidity with excellent minerality. Lighter and fresher than I was expecting. Drink or hold. Excellent. 91+

Getting deep into the night here so notes are brief. Young but approachable. Darker fruits with a touch of Vosne spice. Shows the vintage character here. Delicious. Two bottles consumed. Needs 3-5 years at least. Very good. 89+

Lifted notes on the nose from the whole cluster with nice weight and decent acidity. Would love to try the 2010 version. Needs a few years for sure. Very good. 89+
