This was much better than the disappointing bottle that I drank two plus years ago. Rich, concentrated, and balanced. Seems to be in a very good place at this juncture and should drink well for a number of years. Exceeded expectations and restored my faith in this producer.

Missed this one during my tasting a month ago at the winery. Ordered it and it came in about 10 days ago. Opened and tasted early in the day. Loads of chocolate early in which is not what I usually get with this one.
Let it breathe with the cork out of the bottle for about 3+ hours then enjoyed with the HMCs over 2-3 hours and dinner. The final glasses were decanted by hour 5 and enjoyed over the next 2 hours at which point the great Ehrlich nose, dark, smooth dark red fruit became a bit tart and more red fruited at the end. A very nice wine but at this point it is wayyyy too early to pop these. The vintage will play out over the next couple of years. It'll be very good, too. The 94 is for hours 2-3 of air. Less before and less after, at this point.

Was surprisingly thin early on but 2 hour decant made all the difference. really opened up, typical Beau Vigne fashion, bold but not overwhelming fruit with good structure. I am not sure if Kirk Venge was still involved with this vintage, but nevertheless, has hint of his style of wine.

Would benefit from few more years of cellaring.

Hate rating a wine so many times but am compelled with this one to do so. Been 5-6 months or so since my last bottle. HMC was kind enough to crack one open after we'd finished off our previous bottles for the evening. Cold from his chiller and open for business right from the start. That classic Ehrlich nose and taste profile evident on the first sip. The cassis from this vineyard mated with BCellars' choice of French oak is a perfect pairing. We talk so often of food and wine pairings, but I think lost in the shuffle is the pairing of the flavor profiles that different vineyards can give you, when mated with different cooperages and not just speaking categorically about French vs American oak, but the differing flavor profiles/spices that various coopers can impart with their barrels. Whatever this combo is with the Ehrich fruit, it's a perfect pairing. I hope it never changes. This bottle an easy 95 from the get go, and probably right near a 96 through the hour it lasted for us four. Just so awesomely good.....approaching a full out 96 score from me. A few bottles left to monitor for the next 2 years so we'll see if it gets there soon.

Coravined, then 30 minutes in glass. Nearly opaque electric purple magenta color. Blackberry, currant, violet, orange rind, and subtle garrigue. Very smooth, plush, tongue drying palate. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish. 91% CS, 5% CF, 3% Merlot, and 1% PV. 1500 cases made.

Gift from a friend. 1 hour decant.

Peppery on the nose, some indian spice.

On palate, stewed fruit but not in a good way. It almost feels like as if i bitten into past the expiration date fruit. sweet but weird kind of sweet, if you know what i mean. Tannins are grainy, medium finish.

Maybe this needs to be aged further? But not a high acidity level already. I gave it 81 since it didn't cost me anything, but if i had to pay for it? less than 60.

Picked this bottle up from Spectrum Auctions last year. Sitting in a cool cellar on its side since. Bought it to drink with a friend who's a big Beringer Private Reserve guy and he finally arrived in the last few days to enjoy a few bottles with his drinking buddies. Pnp'd to find what smelled like a cork fault to me at first but it was faint and also smelled strongly of freshly tilled black dirt. That was the predominant nose on the cork, just black dirt....so into a decanter for a few hours yesterday afternoon, prior to our event. I tried to sample a small pour over the next few hours but just couldn't do it whenever I brought the glass close enough to my face! Carol said "it's skunk ass!" And she was probably right. I've never encountered a bottle like this in my wine drinking life. Poured it back into the bottle under its cork (for all of 20 minutes) to take to HMCs for our event. Removed the cork and warned them about what they were going to taste. Behold......it actually improved in bottle. A tad of fruit became identifiable on the nose, but just a tad. We all had sips for a few minutes but then it became clearer to everyone that the wine was bad and going downhill rapidly from that point. Oxygen was NOT its friend. Depriving it of oxygen was. Down the drain it went.....like everyone else on here who's had a number of wines over the years, I've had some corked bottles before, and actually drank a few of them in spite of their fault, but this was by far the weirdest behaving and most "skunk ass" outlier of them all.

Hadn’t touched my small stash of Black Fruit since I purchased it from the winery. Short decant and it seemed ready to go. Blue and black fruits, violets and cassis on the nose. Fairly rich, smooth, chalky finish with integrated tannins. Nice finish, Drinking well at this stage, considering the vintage. Well done, minds me of the 2014 Juliet.

One hour decant though I'm not sure it was needed. Purple/black with violet nose. Black and blue fruits with chocolate notes. Rich, opulent and full bodied. Impeccably balanced. Grippy tannins and a long, long finish. This is a delicious well made Napa cabernet. Paired perfectly with a Delmonico steak. Considered buying more but I see the winery hiked the price to $185. Five bottles remaining 'till the 2021 vintage comes along.

While I am a long time fan of Beau Vigne, this wine is new to me. From what I have red, it is a blend of clones 4 and 6. I have also read that it has fruit from Missouri hopper, which confuses me as that vineyard is in Oakville AVA, bordering Yountville.

I PNP during dinner. The wine seems a bit out of balance. Definite syrah like richness, and some dust, but seemed to lack acidity and enough tannins to balance the fruit. Not my style. I do prefer their estate cabs, and Juliet

Amazing.....been sitting on most of these '19s but decided Carol deserved one tonight. Pnp'd into a decanter an hour before dinner, but it didn't really need it. Ready to go from the start. Big, bold cab fruit nose upfront. Dark in the glass, with oak, camphor, a touch of graphite and dark red berries. In the mouth, excellent weight, big juicy dark red fruit, matching acidity and sweet round tannins all balanced out. Two hours in and this one grows just a touch darker but not tarry at all. This is always one of my fav BCellars wines and the '19 is no exception. The 15.2% alc is hidden well. No sense of heat to the wine. The finish goes on and on with this one over a good minute ....and that's only after you get up the nerve to swallow. Working towards a 96 for me given the finish. Carol says 95.

My second bottle of Ed”s inaugural entry level wine at Cardano. This improved considerably with air, needed at least an hour in the glass to open up, and was best after two hours. Deep garnet in color, not overly expressive on the nose. Mostly dark blue fruits, some black cherries lace with a hint of chocolate, tobacco and violets. This is largely mineral driven, fruit is pushed slightly to the background, but it is balanced with good freshness. Best with food.

Pnp'd with my son, daughter in law and beautiful new grandson as we watched the Eagles dismantle the previously tough, Titans. No contest, in the game or in the glass. Over 2-3 hours this one just overpowers the zins we had earlier today. The nose is rich and classic with graphite and herbs. The palate is equally as rich with deep, dark berry fruit, riveting acidity giving it that classic B Cellars energy in the glass. The palate is dry but intense with dark berry fruit and spice. Every bit of a 95........

Opened this last night, influenced as usual by Mark1npt. In this case he was correct, this is drinking unbelievably well right now. Open from the pnp, intense nose of dark fruits, palate to match, everything in balance. The tannins became a little grippier with time open but it was still excellent. Going to try and write an extensive note on this one as I follow it over several hours. Beau Vigne has always been a personal favorite but has now changed hands. Some of their wines were made by Dave Phinney, Kurk Venge and more recently by owner Ed Snider. They had a great vineyard with fantastic CS and CF fruit. They have received high 90s and even 100 point scores and I have often found them unique in profile. This Cult was made by the new regime after Ed left ( quite pissed it seemed) to start his own label - Cardano.

PNP room temperature - initial impression - Good nose showing some wood nuances a bit of a floral note and maybe some blackberry. The wine is dark with a slight red hue. Rim - dark red. Tastes of blackberry fruit overshadowed by youngish medium tannins. Ever so slightly tart to start.

45 min in - tannins smoothing out. Medium weight plus in the mouth. Much less weighty and primary than most of the 18s I have tried so far. Fruit just on the plum side of blackberry.

90 mins in - Definite aromas of vanilla and saddle leather emerging. blackberry and a hint of anise. Rough tannins barely noticeable.

2.5 hours in - wet stone and graphite emerges and over takes the vanillin. There is also a sweet note lifted by a whiff of alcohol. Mouthfeel is good but lacks any mouth coating smoothness or glycerin. This is definitely not a heavy wine like many past really young Cults. This feels more like the Family Reserve in weight.
Fruit has moved towards black raspberry.

Now 3 hours in and the glass is nearly gone. This wine is solid, drinking well for such a baby and only needs weight and guide and maybe a bluer fruit note for me to grade it higher. Age will probably help but I don't see this getting more than a couple points higher.

93 HMC = PS Cult is usually a 100 dollar plus wine. This was sub 29 bucks at Costco. Now that's QPR
  • Be.Lee commented:

5/28/21, 7:59 PM - I spoke with Oscar who used to work at BV and still is connected to the winery. Beau Vigne, for some reason, decided to produce 2 different wines under "Cult" label. The original beloved Cult still goes for $100+ and has silk label. The ones you guys bought (so did i) at costco for 30 has paper label. This wine is QPR but doesnt' compare at all to previous Cults.

I might pester Oscar to sell me the $100+ cult and do a side by side comparison.

  • Be.Lee commented:

8/8/22, 12:39 PM - Ed's unfortunate divorce meant he had to sell BV. There was also Edward Lewis Cellars that he started but also closed during the settlement it seems.

I know Seven Apart bought and sold the brand but kept the vineyard. So i am curious if current Cult (anniversary cult) is sourced from same vineyard(s) as when Ed/Kirk made em.

Been 5 months since my barrel tasting of this one at the winery with Peter having it served to us with a 2 hour decant. Tonight I used the coravin to pour off a glass from the bottle after dinner. Too cold, slightly muted and a decent whiff of alc, with high acidity when first poured. 60 min in the glass, warming to room temp and the alc burns off and the acidity tames a bit and the beautiful MH nose and palate show up. Best at almost 2 hours of air., just like back in January from barrel. In better balance and need I say maybe a touch more powerful now? The savory components of this great vineyard are on full display, plenty of meaty, umami notes but also the great quality red and blue fruit. Lots of heavy Coke syrup like cassis, with a slight herbal component to start out and I am brought back to my early childhood where every stomachache was remedied by my Old-World Polish-Ukranian grandmother, with a teaspoon of pure Coke syrup. This wine brings back so many great memories! 2nd (glass) coravin pour 2+ hours in (and already at room temp)....not as much of a sense of heat and more florals begin to emerge on the nose. There is a whiff of 3M Scotch tape, of all things, (maybe left over from my recent covid struggles?) to go with the rose petals and graphite elements. Nice complexity with this modern Napa cab. Definitely a modern Napa cab, not to be mistaken with the old Napa styles of Arrowood, Dunn, Mayacamus, etc.

Addendum: Left on its side on the counter overnight.....drippings on the counter indicating the cork never sealed completely after the smaller bore vintage coravin needle was used (what else is new?)......the wine after this slow ox of 24 hours has tamed down a couple notches. It's softer but also more restrained/reticent. Lacks all the beautiful power and hedonism that last night brought forth with those first couple of pours. 97 last night......93 tonight. Again, this one seems to prove my point that 'young' (not quite ready for Prime Time) wines, do suffer when given too much air at this point in their development. I'd average it out at a 95 but last night's 2 glasses at 97, were just too damn good! So I'm keeping my score at a 97.

In 2018, Beau Vigne decided to make 2 different wines under the same label "Cult." I kid you not. The original Cult cost $100+ and has silk label, while the Cult you can buy at Costco for 30 bux is paper based.

This review is for the paper-based "I bought it at Costco" Cult

Dark crimson in color with pleasant raspberry and lemon that typifies BV Atlas Peak region, but much more subdued than previous vintages of Cult (that goes for $100+). Tannins are supple, but rough on the edges. Fairly long finish.

Overall, a shell of what Cult used to stand for, but for the price, this is a great QPR buy. If you see it @ Costco, I'd recommend stocking up and drinking them as week-day wines.

Writing this one up, only because it's so different than my last bottle just a month ago, so Jen....take note.

Opened after dinner last night. Poured off a glass and put the cork back in the bottle. First sips? The best. 95. Rich, dark red Oakville fruit but lacking the sense on the nose and the palate, that it's an Ehrlich. Drinks well for an hour or so then begins to turn black fruited, tarry and bitter. An 87 for my palate at that point.

Today.....poured off a glass about 14 hours later and it's no longer bitter. It's smooth and juicy blackberry fruit, still lacking in both the textbook Ehrlich nose and palate. But damn good. Balanced in acidity and tannin, it has that great B Cellars energy to it. Back up to a 94 now?

Pre dinner with the HMCs......still drinking well but all of us agree....devoid of any character that would note it as being from the Ehrlich vineyard. Strangest bottle of this I've ever had. Glass full, to compare next to the '18 Vermeil Pickett Road and '14 Restricted Cab Franc. Notes on those to follow.

Preface: Jen, give this 3-5 hours of air and you'll love it, now!

Been about 8 months since my last taste of this one....pnp'd into a decanter at 2pm. Initial impression: somewhat muted forest floor/herbal nose, strong iron pan, palate of bright, thin red fruit with a hint of tart orange rind and that great '18 tannic structure. A 91.

1 hour in and, boom! A nice floral, maybe rose petal nose. Slight amount of high end ladies perfume, a hint of sweet confectioner's sugar and the slightest of whiffs of the 14.9% alc. Structure has softened considerably, much faster than I would have thought, the wine has picked up some weight already, no longer 'thin', the flavor profile is red/dark red fruited with almost a MHopper meaty-ness to it. Love the umami character this is exhibiting and there is some great backing acidity throughout ensuring a really nice mouth watering ending. Trying to hold off on drinking this, waiting another hour for Carol to get home from work....I opened this for her, after all! A 93+

2 hours in, and it's that great Ehrlich experience I love. More roses and now lavender on the nose with a big dollop of vanilla, too. Big, deep, sweet dark red raspberry fruit appears. A dense compote type of fruit. Tannins are regressing, acidity balanced with the fruit/tannic components. Mouth is watering even more over the elongated finish. Love the complexity and depth developing now a 95-96. I hope what I'm seeing with this particular '18, is what's to come with all the rest of them in the cellar! What a vintage this is going to be......

3-5 hours in......everything is integrating and all hard/uneven edges resolving into a soft chalky, beautiful, fully together wine. The red raspberry starts turning into blackberry compote. The layers of complexity in this fruit are so much fun, and so good. Faint graphite starts to show up on the nose, the wonderful bead of acidity carries all throughout, from start to finish. Dare I say this might be approaching a 97 at this time? An early 93 and a late 97. The bottle is almost gone, but it was a lot of fun.....glad I have more!

This is good, but very different from my idea of a PinotI it is fruity, bordering on "Jammy". A heavier style, but it may be the grape itself grown in such a warm and sunny locale.

Three hour decant. Very deep magenta color. Ripe black cherry, boysenberry, crushed black walnut, and subtle lemon shortbread cookie on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, with vibrant, lingering acidity. Very firm tannins on the longish finish.

Beautiful Cab that just needs time to fully hit its stride. This will be a solid 95+ point bottle in another two years. Cheers to Mark1NPT for rolling out a continual stream of great bottles while I’m hanging out in Naples for a few days.

Having said that, there are fruit bombs (artificial) that deserves jail time (I am looking at you Freakshow), but good fruit-forward napa cabs are always welcome in my book :D

*Which brings to a question of why Ehlich over Star @Mark? Star seem to have more fruit forwardness than Ehlich.

Tasted at winery:

Opened for us at request; still very young as expected, but has all the necessary structure to be great. I, for some reason, prefer star over bridgeline (also tasted), as Star cab highlights Rutherford terrior better, and appears more balanced from the get-go.

2019 tannins, compared to the 18s, seem softer and has chance to open up even before 18s are ready. Bought two, since there won't be none for 20s vintage.. Stupid napa fire...
  • Be.Lee commented:

11/10/21, 11:42 AM - I wasn't able to taste the Ehlich. I got to taste Bridgeline and Star. I haven't found Ehlich to my taste yet, and my companions were into white/pinot, so i didn't bother requesting that one for tasting.

  • Be.Lee commented:

11/12/21, 4:36 PM - I have few bottles of Ehlich sleeping in my cellar, but I find Ehlich to require more nap time before they are ready to blossom. I took 2 colleagues to this tasting who aren't fans of cabernet sauvignon, and I figured there was no point of asking Levi to serve 19 Ehlich when there was no way in heck it was going to be ready to drink yet.

Star cab, i find, is enjoyable from the get-go, and I am waiting patiently for Mark1npt to tell me when I can open my 18 Ehlich...

  • Be.Lee commented:

11/12/21, 4:38 PM - The other reason is I prefer Fey style over SLV style (Stags Leap); If Star is Fey, then Ehlich, i find, is more in line with SLV.

maybe we can go ahead and call To Kalon as cask 23 :D

I liked this back in December, thinking it a leaner, old school kind of cab. Last night I really did not care for this at all. It felt like anonymous, generic cab. There is a flavor that cheap wines have and my last few forays into dN have felt that way. I've had better luck with the 25 Spring Mt. but the 15 Merlot and 17 Napa cab have completely lacked soul or a sense of place or character. I wonder if the filtration regimen is what is giving me that sense of sameness. At the end of the day, many people like these and I seem rather not to like them, so I'll chalk it up to personal preference. Should be fine for wine to serve at or bring to parties, etc., so no great loss. I will keep a few of each for a couple of years to see if I they grow on me though, as these remain young wines which could yet improve. I've certainly been surprised at times by wines I didn't like when given some time to evolve.
  • Be.Lee commented:

11/10/21, 11:54 AM - As $15 dollar wines go, I don't expect more from dNc. Generic wine at generic price point that majority of consumers would enjoy. Agree wholeheartly that they lack something special. Having said that, I would be asking too much if I wanted more...

light color, almost on pink-ish side. orange zest and granny apple on the nose. very sweet. Is barolo supposed to be this sweet? Bit green initially with PnP, that gradually dissipated with aeration. decent finish, but that initial sweetness really takes away the enjoyment. Tannins are rough but this wine doesn't have acid backbone to carry for years.

An appealing name but a wine that is lacking for now. This wine is good and probably too young but special, probably not. Like many 2018's it's not quite ready right now. Perhaps it will gain some traction, but the wine is not revealing very much at this point. Dark purple blue color with an nose that offers little aroma. Blue and blackberry fruit that shows on the soft side palate wise, and some plum. At this point, uneventful and underdeveloped. After a couple hours of air, slightly better (from about 89-90 to 91 Points and that's maybe too generous. For my money, there are better options to peruse, perhaps time will prove me wrong?

Based on prior experience with this winery, the expectations were high; unfortunately this ended up being a huge disappointment. Aromatics were shy, and the flavor profile and mouthfeel fell flat: lacks concentration and depth, fruits present as diluted, body is light, and finish is short. I was expecting a rich, focused and concentrated wine, instead I got a weak version of a Cabernet Sauvignon: hollow, thin and very bland. Not sure what happened to this winery, but its product has fallen into disrepair. Lacks intensity, length and complexity. Completely overwhelmed by the grilled medium rare ribeye. Drink now.

96 bordering on a 97 for me personally....slow ox'd in the bottle for an hour before dinner then decanted as we consumed over another hour during dinner with Chef Paul's beautifully prepared steak! In a day of many, many fine wines this was most likely the WOTN for the 2nd day of the '21 Wine-o-palooza! For the past few years, these beautfiul Cab Franc blends from Andy Erickson have really floated my boat....unmistakable (but not at all green) dark red CabF fruit upfront, smooth, soft and balanced throughout. Very, very good place for this one, but it's my last '10 :(

Beats the Sociando Mallet by only a point or two in my book and only late down the stretch....I guess this is the 3rd days WOTN for me but only by a slim margin over the now well aired/decanted '11 SQN Patine Grenache.

4 hour decant and enjoyed over an additional 2-3 hours. Seems to hit another gear of smoothness and class at about the 6-7 hour decant time. For the first few hours I felt the Sociando Mallet outplayed this Cos. Slight barnyard funk on the nose that blew off after about an hour. Darker, more masculine fruit to start with. Stronger, more moderate drying tannins in the mouth, coating everything if you swirl for a while then swallow. Black currant dominant. Strong St. Estephe muscle. Goes though a phase at 4+ hours of increased acidity and tannins and alcohol...then by hour 6-7 this evolves into a thing of beauty. More graphite, more dark inky fruit and mushroom. It picks up weight and layers to the fruit. An aged and finely integrated, yet still going strong BDX......what a pleasure! Based on this bottle I don't see any stopping this wine in the next 10 years. I hope my last one of these is built the same. I'm gonna wait quite a while to try it.

Gifted last month......enjoyed this evening while binge watching Longmire. I've never understood the attraction of this label. Like it's the Holy Grail of Cali Pinot. Obviously with its recent purchase by the Burgundians it must be? Right? But I find myself proclaiming....."the Emperor has no clothes!" This wine pales in comparison to any of the many Sojourn offerings in any given year. It's nose has some perfume, yes. That's nice. I give you that. Pure, raw, cherry in the mouth...it's well made, I give you that. Better after 1 hour in the glass and moving to room temp of 74 degrees. There is precision in the wine and wonderful acidity. I tried hard to give this a 90 but I think my CT brotherhood have graded it very fairly at 92 on avg. Still....Sojourn at 1/4 th the price is the better deal.

Perhaps this is due to my changing palate, but this was a total dud for me. High pH, sweeter than Conundrum (Yuk), with ever present singular fruit, fruit, fruit, that was neither pleasant nor elegant, not sure how the original winery could ever consider selling this wine for more than buck fifty.

i am not certain aging would ever fix this wine, and certainly what was billed as a cellar defender, turned out to be an imposter.

Short finish has an red fruit acid burst, dried herbs, and a quartz earth note. 95 for me personally but it took all of 4 hours of air to get there. Approachable but quite tannic at the pnp. I did greatly appreciate the MHopper nose and red/blue fruited profile. There is just something about this vineyard that floats my boat. The acidity is always there to buttress the fruit. Smoothed out quite a bit at 4 hours and the last glass was the best so give this a long decant if you open one now. I see upside here for another 2 or 3 points as it comes together over the next few years.
