9/25/23, 11:24 PM - It restored your faith in pre-current debacle beau Vigne. I don't consider vintages 18 and beyond real BV, since Ed sold vineyards after 17s.
9/25/23, 11:03 PM - Being slightly tighter than 19 isn't a bad thing. As long as it's not slumbering monster like 18s.
6/27/23, 2:05 PM - I still have two more cases of this, so looking to see how this evolve over next 2 decades. Definitely going to miss good ol BV, not current fake version.
5/2/23, 11:04 AM - DQ, I am curious about your statement of "glad it's STILL drinking well" I'd expect this wine to evolve and improve over next few years, no? Has it already hit its peak drinking age?
4/14/23, 8:17 PM - Mark, to be fair. my wife and I taste 19 7apart expedition and 19 b-cellars ehlich and star. We both thought expedition was better than either b-cellar wines.
4/14/23, 8:48 PM - haha I bought it at $165, so it stings less :P I certainly wouldn't buy them at the rate of Becks
4/14/23, 8:55 PM - I am hoping.... that they go back down a bit. I get that they need to make up for lost vintage but that price increase was just too much.
4/14/23, 9:05 PM - At that price, I may as well go after high end Barolos :D
3/29/23, 11:27 AM - perhaps. i got this as a gift, so i don't know how it was stored beforehand.
3/14/23, 12:41 PM - What do you do with wines like this? If this purchase was directly from a reputable store, you would ask for money back right? But what if it was an auction? Can you get your money back?
3/16/23, 11:07 AM - Makes me want to never dip into auction market o_O
3/13/23, 11:37 PM - I second Seven Apart, but FB should already be well versed with wines from that winery since BV used to make em.
2/22/23, 11:20 AM - 2020 Expedition was already great. highly recommend
2/20/23, 8:25 PM - the fact that they have gall to charge 45+ for this POS is really upsetting. This new mgmt is really destroying the prestige brand of BV.
2/21/23, 8:19 PM - It's really pathetic way to do business. Very shady. I "considered" buying some more BV to support Oscar, since he seems to be involved with BV business a bit but... not happy at all.
2/18/23, 9:15 PM - 2018 wines from Oakville are mystery to me. Some people say it was an amazing year.. Some say it might turn into a pumpkin. I have a few bottles of these wines and I am crossing my finger that when I wake up in 2030.. these will be amazing.
2/14/23, 1:40 PM - We were there the same day!! I usually like Fay better, but I also thoroughly enjoyed SLV more than Fay during the tasting (2/11/2023)
2/9/23, 11:56 AM - I agree. Not the best of BV collection, especially given the price point. Cult is so much better.
2/5/23, 5:15 PM - Star >>>>> Ehlicht :)
2/6/23, 10:36 AM - Star is just so juicy and delicious. Surprisingly not as dusty as Ehlich. I wonder why....
2/8/23, 10:53 AM - Especially as the price of Becks continue to rise... not sure if they fit my qpr also
2/5/23, 8:39 PM - I actually prefer Ed's real ENTRY level wine @cardano. The Cardano Napa Valley. I think (since i finished em all) that one is only $28/b? Ask if they still have some left. great QPR
2/6/23, 2:27 PM - I bought a dozen. Finished half young and now other half are asleep.sorry to hear your experience wasn't as good.
12/4/22, 9:53 PM - Congrats on being a grandad!
12/5/22, 8:40 PM - I been to B cellars recently, and Levi also mentioned that 19s are more approachable than the 18s. It seems like (from Napa's perspective) 19 is considered a even better vintage than the 18s. Despite the fanfare 18s received when they first came out.
12/5/22, 9:28 PM - Am curious how things evolve next few yrs. I recently visited Seven Apart and had a chance to try their 19 and 20 expeditions as well as 19 summit. They were under the impression 19s are far better than the 18s.
12/8/22, 10:47 AM - @Mark. Do you plan to buy any 2020 Beckstoff from B-cellars? They jacked up the price yet again. I get that they had limited quantity but still.
12/8/22, 12:05 PM - 2020 B Cellars Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon $285"Cabernet SauvignonThis wine is the perfect representation of what made the Rutherford AVA infamous, Rutherford Dust. Balanced red and black fruit burst from the glass. Cranberry, plums, and strawberry jam are balanced with an aroma of castelvetrano olives and cardamom. On the palate damson plum, pomegranates, chocolate covered cherries, and exotic spices lead to a tannic finish reminiscent of prickly pears." - Winemaker Kirk Venge2020 B Cellars Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon $310Cabernet Sauvignon"The aromas are expressive of dark fruit; blackberry, huckleberry, dried currants, and brewed espresso. The mouthfeel is heavy, and full, and covers the entirety of the palate. The flavors mirror the aromas perfectly. Graphite, slate, and cocoa bean balance the dark fruit. The taste is dynamic, building to a crescendoed burst of acidity and melding into a long, gripping, tannic finish. Everything that you love about the Dr. Crane vineyard is highlighted in this vintage." - Winemaker Kirk Venge2020 B Cellars Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon $310"The aroma is bright and earthy, with brandied cherries, cassis, figs, and cloved-covered orange peels. Dried cherries, licorice, dates, and plums dance across your palate. These candied, dried fruits are balanced by an undertone of forest floor and espresso. This wine has an ethereal presence that is balanced by smooth velvety tannins on the finish." - Winemaker Kirk VengeNot sure what to think of these "offers" o_O
12/8/22, 12:44 PM - I can wholeheartly recommend 2020 Seven Apart Expedition. No smoke taint (for now) ,and just so delicious.
12/12/22, 4:12 PM - @Mark. 18 Ehrlich, with 2 hour decant, is signing nicely. I think next time, I need to do side-by-side comparison of 18 and 19.
12/12/22, 5:26 PM - yup! with 2 hr decant. it's realllly good.
12/12/22, 4:06 PM - @DecantingQueen - For Science! (and for you and Mark) I PnP 18 Ehrlich just now.... if 19 is ready from PnP, 18 isn't there yet at all. X_X
11/29/22, 10:53 AM - it was my father-in-law. I couldn't say anything...
8/14/22, 10:12 AM - Just because you don’t like my score, doesnt mean you have to comment on it and decide whether i should drink it or not. Might i suggest you move on with your life without being a Karen?
5/28/21, 7:59 PM - I spoke with Oscar who used to work at BV and still is connected to the winery. Beau Vigne, for some reason, decided to produce 2 different wines under "Cult" label. The original beloved Cult still goes for $100+ and has silk label. The ones you guys bought (so did i) at costco for 30 has paper label. This wine is QPR but doesnt' compare at all to previous Cults.I might pester Oscar to sell me the $100+ cult and do a side by side comparison.
8/8/22, 12:39 PM - Ed's unfortunate divorce meant he had to sell BV. There was also Edward Lewis Cellars that he started but also closed during the settlement it seems. I know Seven Apart bought and sold the brand but kept the vineyard. So i am curious if current Cult (anniversary cult) is sourced from same vineyard(s) as when Ed/Kirk made em.
6/16/22, 7:42 AM - teaspoon of pure coke syrup.... would love to hear more about that Mark! :) Sorry to hear you had to finish this bottle earlier than desired due to coravin issue.
4/4/22, 7:38 AM - I wonder if this bottle would ever open up.
4/6/22, 6:33 AM - @Decanting Queen - when do you foresee these to be ready?
4/4/22, 7:37 AM - super interesting; 2018 star for me has never felt "hot" and have always preferred star over brideline. I agree that musty is weird for star and wonder if it is just off bottle or going through weird phase.
3/14/22, 5:28 PM - Glad you found the "original" cult! I don't plan to buy any more BV wine given their shady ways of using same name across two very different wines.
3/2/22, 9:09 PM - nooooo. don't discuss online. share your wealth of knowledge with rest of us.
1/31/22, 10:02 PM - I stopped by winery yesterday and their stock of 18 ehlich is running dangerously low. less than 15 remaining (After i gobbled up half a dozen more). stock up if you are running low :)
12/16/21, 3:21 PM - Kirk Venge will make pinot venge style :D
11/17/21, 12:21 PM - 6-12 months? not 6- 12 years? :D
11/21/21, 11:30 AM - Mark, do you feel like New World Fruit fades away quicker than the old world fruit? I can't imagine people drinking aged bordeaux wondering where are them fruits?
11/21/21, 4:40 PM - I guess the question was more for :"I wonder what kind of secondary and tertiary characteristics come out from aged Napa?" rather than Bash fruit bombs!Having said that, there are fruit bombs (artificial) that deserves jail time (I am looking at you Freakshow), but good fruit-forward napa cabs are always welcome in my book :D *Which brings to a question of why Ehlich over Star @Mark? Star seem to have more fruit forwardness than Ehlich.
11/10/21, 11:42 AM - I wasn't able to taste the Ehlich. I got to taste Bridgeline and Star. I haven't found Ehlich to my taste yet, and my companions were into white/pinot, so i didn't bother requesting that one for tasting.
11/12/21, 4:36 PM - I have few bottles of Ehlich sleeping in my cellar, but I find Ehlich to require more nap time before they are ready to blossom. I took 2 colleagues to this tasting who aren't fans of cabernet sauvignon, and I figured there was no point of asking Levi to serve 19 Ehlich when there was no way in heck it was going to be ready to drink yet. Star cab, i find, is enjoyable from the get-go, and I am waiting patiently for Mark1npt to tell me when I can open my 18 Ehlich...
11/12/21, 4:38 PM - The other reason is I prefer Fey style over SLV style (Stags Leap); If Star is Fey, then Ehlich, i find, is more in line with SLV. maybe we can go ahead and call To Kalon as cask 23 :D
11/12/21, 9:13 PM - But when is the apex? :D i can afford to wait a bit longer.
11/10/21, 11:54 AM - As $15 dollar wines go, I don't expect more from dNc. Generic wine at generic price point that majority of consumers would enjoy. Agree wholeheartly that they lack something special. Having said that, I would be asking too much if I wanted more...
11/10/21, 12:39 PM - I think that's very fair. I also stopped buying dNg altogether. I was enamored with the idea of buying good fruit at cheaper price, but these mystery wines are really hit or miss. Could they improve with time? sure. Would I bother saving them for long-time? eh...
2/26/21, 1:27 PM - it was more of play-on words from garagiste order but sure that works too :)
2/26/21, 10:56 PM - I enjoyed this wine late night by self without any food. I agree with other tasters that this could be your weekday wine with tomato based pasta or meat ragu dish, and using this wine as coke with fruit flavor and alcohol... can't go wrong!
2/27/21, 5:48 PM - if it make you feel better, day 3, this taste a whole lot better than day 1 or 2. maybe this bottle deserves few more years of rest
11/8/21, 7:06 AM - srh: 14 dollars per bottle; Some would argue that's a decent price, but given cheap, good to drink daily wines flooding the market, this to me was overpriced a bit.
11/8/21, 12:21 PM - After few bad experiences, I don't think I will be buying any more mystery wines from Garagiste... lol
8/25/21, 3:41 AM - I'd give this some time. I had a chance to try this last year, and it was vibrant.
8/15/21, 2:24 PM - it was good! I began to adjust my scores to not have everything between 90 and 100. 81 is a solid 20 bux wine for me.
8/3/21, 11:15 AM - I am curious to know how this wine will evolve over next few years. based on the vintage, this could be in the dumb phase. Whether this just falls off the cliff or gives secondary characteristics... to be seen!
5/24/21, 11:01 AM - How is Andy Erickson's style of winemaking?
5/24/21, 10:49 AM - thanks for your review. Interesting. I thought 2003 was considered a down year for left bank. Guess this one holds up well!
5/17/21, 2:50 PM - I am curious to see how this compares with B cellar's MH in few years
5/18/21, 8:27 AM - Don't go by my tasting Jemme... total newbie here :X on side note, Sequoia Grove's Tonella Cab was very reminescant to B cellar's Star vineyard cab. Maybe I shouldn't be too surprised since they source from vineyard adjacent to Star's
5/18/21, 8:47 AM - they are not as fancy tasting as b cellars, but food was amazing. You probably know Oscar from Beau Vigne days, he works there now. Wines are more balanced like old world than typical Napa. Cab Franc was better than many of their cab Sauv offering, except for the Tonella.
5/6/21, 7:35 PM - Do you feel like WS needs to sleep for same # of years as burgundy? Sojourn I feel like they are made to drink.
5/4/21, 11:26 AM - I am staying away from any Garagiste "surprise" wines. Yuck indeed. Cooking.. maybe, or give it to unsuspecting friends.
5/5/21, 8:53 PM - BT: my issue is this. Even the "success" from garagiste mystery pack is like 20% reduction from market price. That means I need to have 5 success stories for every dud to break even. Not sure if Garagiste can deliver that kind of ratio....
9/30/19, 2:22 PM - @Mark. Thank you for your comment. I presume you are referring to potential effect of 2017 napa fire on quantity/quality of 17 cabs? I didn't get any hints of char/smoke from BV's cabs. I must admit i am not too familiar with where their vines are located in relation to '17 fire. But they were darn good (esp Guest cottage), so no complaints here :)
10/18/19, 5:02 PM - I have a question for you. How would BV cabs do if i cellar them for 2-3 decades. Simple answer is to just hold onto one bottle for 2-3 dec and tell you, but i don't want to be disappointed, so would appreciate your insight.
10/19/19, 3:30 PM - Thank you Mark. I am yet to taste old Bordeaux, but whenever i hear some of reviewers describing old BD in lue of "horse sweat, leather" I wonder if i would like em... haha Sorry to hear you didn't get a chance to drop by BV. I did go to their harvest party, but didn't walk away feeling connected with new management . I am also sadden to see Edward Lewis Cellar disappear (what happened to Ed Snider?) . Prob won't be buying BV heavily unless they prove themselves otherwise.
1/8/20, 7:21 PM - Hey Mark, have you had a chance to try Ed Snider's new venture? I signed up for their club out of loyalty, but am curious how their new wines will taste. happy new year btw!
1/10/20, 1:46 PM - Cardanos Estate is his new venture.Spoke with Beau, his Son, on the phone yesterday, seems like they are sourcing their fruit from Atlas Peak, not too far from where they used to for BVcheers
1/10/20, 10:09 PM - will do. I have listened to your rec and have begun to collect some BDx, so let's see how much $$ I have left to buy more before my wife stabs me in the back. After all... berserker day is coming up shortly....
10/14/20, 7:39 AM - Cardanos is shipping items shortly :) Not sure If i will open reserve right away but will keep you guys posted on their 2nd tier ones .
5/4/21, 11:27 AM - Hi FB, I am under a strict order by my wife to stop buying wine... So i can't buy any more, but wish you got as many as you like!
4/18/21, 10:40 PM - this is closer to what i experienced :) a great wine. Just needs time I think.
4/15/21, 9:00 PM - well... that's the issue. it's not a barolo but labeled as one.
4/12/21, 9:26 PM - Hey Cameron, I haven't re-tried this yet. I just came back from a month long trip, so will try this in a bit.
4/13/21, 7:25 PM - So I tried it today.... and it's not ready.
3/10/21, 4:46 PM - I have 11 bottles left. Hope to have different experience over next few years :) Appreciate you making De Negoce Cameron.
3/6/21, 2:18 PM - I believe this has a bit of Cab Franc mixed in, which is why you are getting those acidity coming through.
3/6/21, 4:24 PM - interesting. I didn't think Petit Verdot would impart such characteristics.
3/6/21, 2:22 PM - I agree with you Jenme. Walala wasn't that impressive for me as well.
2/27/21, 9:05 PM - this was indeed very approachable. Looking forward to how Heritage wines evolve over next few years!
2/28/21, 6:07 PM - uh oh. you ok? renal stones?
2/25/21, 12:17 PM - interesting note! didn't think people specifically search for TJ wines, i hope to try this then!
2/8/21, 9:44 AM - Thank you for a great review. On side note Mark, I was up @ b cellars and they were offering barrel tasting of 2019 Merlot. It was best tasting of the day, beating Ehlich, Kenefich and co. reasonably(?) priced also.
2/9/21, 12:57 PM - HMC, I was hearing that 2019 is even bolder and "better" than 2018. what's your perspective on Napa caps from 19 vintage, and how it may compare with 18s?
2/10/21, 9:43 AM - given the lost year of 2020; would you stock up on 19s to account for a lost vintage?
2/15/21, 8:09 AM - Am always curious... What makes current style of wine production that makes Napa wine not age worthy as say French wine. It's not like these Beckstoffers lack tannins to carry it for decades.
2/15/21, 9:36 AM - Thank you Mark for your thoughtful answer. In that sense, then, do you perceive grapes from Atlas Peak to have better chance for further bottle maturation than an average Napa cap would? Seems like wines made from Atlas Peak grapes have greater acidity level (although with some higher alcohol level than typical BDX).
2/15/21, 10:54 AM - well I am planning to age 16 BV reserve (I believe the grapes for reserve are sourced from Atlas Peak), so will let you know they they are in 2045 :D
2/21/21, 5:08 PM - Mark, I had a chance to listen to Roy Piper discuss 19 vintage. Interesting to hear diverse opinion (lesser tannin than 18, but thinks won't be as great). I wonder what aspect of grape/juice the winemakers use to pre-assess the quality of vintage even before their release.
2/8/21, 10:31 AM - I think this is the issue... This is <$20 bordeaux from Haut Medoc. It would benefit from cellaring, but should it even be a cellaring wine? i thought this was supposed to be a cellar defender...
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
