Had at Anhelo before the Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent) standup comedy event in Phoenix. This wine was in the flight with the NSG de l’Arlot & Vice Versa Spinning Plates. The diversity of the three wines in & of itself was fabulous to experience not to mention when paired with the dry aged prime beef Wellington which was an absolute knockout! This wine has decades but already fantastic!

Early Mar 2024, Rheingau Gourmet Festival, rarity diner “25 vintages of Chateau Montrose”: according to the sommelier double decanted for up to 3 hours; deep rubin red color; opulent bouquet of cherries, red and dark berries plus hints of herbs; like dark cherry juice in the mouth; smooth aristocratic texture.
Together with the 2009 vintage best wine of flight I. Surprisingly open and approachable.
An elegant wine. Decanted probably 30 minutes before drinking, had almost a spice initially but that wore off. Tobacco and black fruit. I was impressed. Enjoyed with My dad and friends with a delicious ribeye, mushrooms and frites.

Tried at 30 minutes and enjoyed for about 4 hours. Some sediment. Tannins are very soft. Very enjoyable throughout but the fruit goes to another level at hour 3. A wine worth enjoying its evolution throughout the evening.

Decanted at Log Haven in SLC. This was ready to go with very little time. Huge perfumy nose of red fruit, tobacco, vanilla. Smooth, classy, velvety palate expression, more red cherries, oak, faint tannins and a lingering finish. Paired with elk in a coffee rub and brussel sprouts. Outstanding 94/95
Chateau Montrose 2010 Decant for >60 mins in small decanter, with great buddy on HK. Great vintage with great nose, complex, rich fruits, cherries & berries, blue fruits with light plums. Herbaceous, earthy, sligh oak. Smooth transition from nose to entry, elegance and palate mainly echo her nose. Personal opinion, drink a little early, potential for great growth! Finished is long, everlasting, lingers within the hind of your throat. Excellent wine. 94-97..... patience tells. Cheers!

Deep, slightly cloudy, glowing ruby. Unbelievable nose, one of the best ever, with blackberry pastries dominating. Absolutely delicious notes of blackberries dominate with plums, mulberries, all laced with red fruits. Superb.

Very nicely balanced, fresh summer berries and sweet cherry super nice balance. Round and smooth tannins at the end. A hint of leather at the end. Drank it vs 2009 and this is slightly less complex, but still totally amazing.

Had this at a Bordeaux tasting, just a quick note to record my impression of the quality. Clearly too young but I believe this will be a knock-out wine in another 10 years.

Very shy at first, aggressive swirling revealed notes of cassis, herbs, bell pepper, cola, rocks.
Definitely full bodied, large tannins, though of high quality, plums, cedar and cola.
This was quite a puzzle, very promising at first, gradually opening up, hinting at greatness. However, after some 2 hours in the glass it shut down and went back into hiding. This clearly just needs as much cellaring as you stand to give it.
Great potential, do not touch for AT LEAST 5 years, probably more like 10-15.
No idea what an accurate score would be, perhaps 93 now, but probably miles higher in due time.

Wow, this wine just far exceeds expectations; nose is pretty closed and tight at first, it needs at least 1 hour of decanting, but then it turns into an explosion of dark fruit; tannings are fairly present at first but soften substantially within an hour. I think it needs at least 2-3 hours decanting; we will see what it's like on day 2 with some oxidation. Keep it in the cellar until 2025.

Young, but not quite primary, there is such a wealth of ripe, sweet, black, and red fruit, it is hard not to be seduced by the endless layers of flavor, fruit, and tannins on the palate. This is one of those wines where once it gets going, it seemingly never wants to stop, and that's a good thing because you want as much of those perfectly ripe, poised, vibrant black and red fruits as you can get, as they coat your palate and stay there. Give it a few more years and it will only get better. Drink from 2025-2060.

Very clean cork with no seepage. Dark true claret colour - very intense with a narrow clear rim. Quite muted nose - mainly oak influence. Stunning palate - dark black fruit - blackberry forward - tannins are still very much to the forward but fine grained. Long finish. Maybe a little early to drink, but very enjoyable now nonetheless. After 2 hours this really started to open up into a very austere Montrose opulence - big wine!

Powerful dark fruit structure. Super complex and a surprisingly fresh acidity. Very clean and straight. Just fantastic now, but with more age even better. Drink 2026-2040. (IG)

Dark fruit, bright acidity, this is already beautiful. Primary, of course, but already approachable and delicious. This will be incredible in 10-20 years.

Drinks at home with J. Drank in Grassl 1855. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, purplish ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of pencil lead, cedarwood, blackcurrant, black cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine polished high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of pencil lead graphite, cedarwood, black cherries, blackberries, blackcurrant, black licorice. Long mouth-filling finish. Excellent quality. So young but so good. The potential for greater things is clear.

The recent 100 point CT ratings prompted me to open this, in preference to several other wines with similar pro ratings, to enjoy with another local I met through CT. I'm rating this 97 today but with conviction that it's still on its upward trajectory. Noticeable are elegant tannins with a texture somewhere between graphite (fine) and charcoal dust. Some cigar notes, dark berries, slate. Beautiful harmony in its complexity.

This is considered to be among the greatest vintages ever made in Montrose... Tannins are incredibly sweet and very present. The wine is full-bodied, even massive, with great purity, depth and a finish that goes on close to a minute.

1966 – 2010 Château Montrose vertical (Regional Wines, Wellington, NZ): Served single blind, one pour. Varieties: CS 53% | M 37% | CF 9% | PV 1%, the highest merlot percentage at the tasting. New oak 60%. Deep, dark colour. A beautiful bouquet of bright blackberry and blackcurrant, crème de cassis and other dark fruit nuances framed by mixed spices, cut herbs, dark chocolate, dark plums and violets. On palate, chocolatey power and intensity. Vibrant, rich dark berry fruit and cassis. Detailed, layered and complex, underpinned by stony minerality. A velvety texture. Dense with serious structure and mid palate fruit weight. Aristocratic. For me, what set this Montrose apart from all of the other good-to-great expressions at the tasting was the 2010’s purity and the exquisite balance and proportion of all of its elements. In such balance it was drinking beautifully on the night. It is though only a baby and should be cellared until at least 2027+. Wine of the tasting. 98+.
2010 Château Montrose was complex, nuanced and well-structured. The developing St. Estèphe was deep ruby in colour with some fine sediments. It was decanted for three hours, and returned to the bottle for another three hours. Aromas of blackberry, black plum and violet were followed by dark chocolate, incense and leather. Underneath were Oriental spices, bay leaves and earth.
The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with medium-high level of balancing acidity and high level of sinewy tannin. Flavours of cassis, graphite and mocha transitioned into black tea, tobacco and stony minerals in a satisfying, long aftertaste. The alcohol level was at 14%. As with many great 2010 Bordeaux, it was quite tight and densely structured at the moment. Another decade of careful ageing would be necessary to soften the tannin.
The blend was composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The grapes were harvested and vinified plot by plot to respect the terroir expression, which also allowed greater flexibility in blending. The wine was aged in 60% new French oak barrels for 18 months.

2010 Blind Cali Cab/Bordeaux Homage to Spurrier (Chez de la Mata): Blind. Wow, a seriously huge if primary/non-delineated nose of plum fruit, tobacco, cedar and spice. Palate is so rich and concentrated yet balanced with freshness and chewy tannin. Gets better, deeper and longer with time in the glass. A spectacular wine in the making. Clearly BDX, but I incorrectly guessed LLC. My 1/10, Group 6/10.

It's been 4 years since my previous bottle review of this wine. There's been some evolution, a bit more broad and open plum and blackberry fruit, more graphite now. Still has that great balance between power, finesse, and elegance that can only be Bordeaux.

Opened for 2 hours. Color is very deep red. No age showing on rim. On the nose : Cassis, graphite and leather. On the palate: Plum, cassis , cocoa nibs, a hint of sour blackberries. Flavors have decent length and lots of breadth. Tannins are very soft. Mouthfeel is elegant. World class wine.

Bordeaux 2010 - 10 Years On - 61 Reds: Bordeaux 2010 after 10 years. 61 reds, mostly big names, tasted blind. Average score 92.1 and lower than the more open and charming 2009 vintage last year (93.4). A few observations: A) It’s not yet the harmonious, complex, classic, clean vintage. Especially the masculine appellations of the left bank need at least 5 more years to just open up, potentially longer to soften. B) Left bank trumps right bank thanks to less detectable alcohol, cleaner lines and the two best wines of the vintage (Mouton, Margaux). C) Pomerol shines bright with many strong wines which can all mask the high alcohol levels (best AOC slightly ahead of Pauillac). D) As in 2009, there are several right banks already past peak, incl. big names (Duffau Lagarosse, Ausone). All in all, 2010 is a very good vintage with pockets of greatness but today 2009 shows more open and hence complex. More information, top and worst 10 list, appellation rankings from five participants in the story link.
TN: This bottle has a lot of substance but I found it utterly hard to drink. No expression, no charm, no fun, no joy. There is a dense dark core but with very little expression and precision. It’s not the only 2010 left bank which showed completely muted (Cos and Haut Bailly come to mind). This definitely needs more time to soften and open-up. I wouldn’t touch my bottles for at least 5 more years (probably 10 or 20 more years are needed). Hard to get to a better score than 88 points if the wine gives you nothing. The others rated it a tad higher.
Decanting: I would at least decant it for 8 to 10 hours.
Group average: 92.2 Group rank: number 38 out of 61 wines

Grand Bordeaux 2010 ten years on tasting; 6/21/2020-6/22/2020 (Fribourg): Big Bordeaux 2010 2-day horizontal hosted by a private collector. My 3 main takeaways from the vintage were 1) more frequent perception of heat, 2) a slightly stronger left bank and a less consistent right bank, 3) while in general it is still too early to pop the 2010s, wine selection is key as some appear to be in decline already, especially on the right bank. The top wines were Mouton (99), Margaux (98) and VCC (98). The biggest positive surprise was Clos Manou (95). Biggest disappointment was Pape Clement (86). More details and complete tasting overview included in the tasting story.
Tasting notes: Ripe red and blue fruit, Williams and slightly leathery – but pretty closed at this stage. Very dense and concentrated with a bodybuilding type of structure and a palate awash with mouth-coating tannin. This is clearly built for the very long term and may offer loads of pleasure in 30+ years, but very hard to say.

Deeper and more reserved on the nose than the 2016 - Bovril, graphite and some cigar box. Tannins are chunkier and the fruit, behind all the structure, redder. Mocha, black winegums and burnt meat on the finish. Inky and persistent but doesn't bring joy, at least at the moment.

Muy bueno, muy denso y oscuro casi negro , como se supone en los st Estephe, con aromas marcados de fruta negra y gran persistencia en boca. Con la edad justa para degustarlo (no antes de 2020 y posiblemente hasta 2050-2060)

Opened late after Cos 2010, Consumed over 3 days 1glass pour, cork put back, kept fresh at 10°C Nose is much more closed/less giving than cos almost muted Tight palate tannins stand out coal some cassis ok length 92pt
Day2 almost no change half bottle left
Day3 nose deeper palate structured and persistent
This will not reach the aromatic spectrum/complexity of cos 2010, it's years away from drinkability but quite lovely in its way
Compared to my 2016 experience I was a little underwhelmed but who knows in 10 years... 94++

Kuki'o Wine Trip 2019; 9/22/2019-9/28/2019 (Champagne & Bordeaux): Really surprised by how approachable this was. Warm and inviting nose of blackberry and currant with mild damp forest and a dense perfume about the whole thing. Clearly a grade above the ‘05 and ‘98 even just on first look. Big mouthful but not overbearing. Soft and sweet tannin. Really nice. Can see how this achieves 100 with modern critics.

HDH Bordeaux Auction; 11/9/2018-11/10/2018 (Chicago, IL): Plenty of black fruit, with incredible intensity and a nice dusty note as well. Lovely sweet fruit and a slight peppery note as well on the nose. Very ripe and potent on the palate, with a hint of blueberry and vanilla as well. Seems a little blowsy, but there's a decent restraint here but a slight touch of heat on the finish. Nice earthiness and power here, but obviously needs plenty of time.

massive, tannic, off the charts in every way. the critics were not kidding when they say this is a monster. after 6 hours of decant and an hour in the glass, it was still holding on tight. Super rich, chocolate, coffee, tar, blackberry liqueur, anise, black current. incredibly pure. almost black, thick and viscous. giving it a low score today because it is just way too young to give it a fair rating, but no doubt will be a 99-100 point wine in 5-10 years.

I certainly dropped the ball on this wine in its youth. But I get it now. Holy Cow! The wine is black, almost opaque in color. There is so much concentration, you can almost eat it with a spoon. The wine is powerful, yet clearly refined. It's dense, intense, full bodied and rich, simultaneously remaining in perfect balance and harmony. With mouth coating levels of intensity, the finish must last 60 seconds. Not as flashy or fleshy as the opulent 2009, yet it's at the same level of quality in a different style.
Birth Year - Themed wine dinner: Opened as a contrast to the 1990. Massive.. hard to approach.. I'm not sure how people are rating this at 96. Sure it's got immense potential but that's all i see now. Hard hold for the foreseeable future.. Day 2 update: opened up with a bit more fruit, but still just a great young bordeaux. Tasty tho!

This wine is just simply delicious. You can't stop drinking it. No matter what analysis follows, the wine is unpretentiously delicious. Mauve edge on an opaque inky core. The nose is big and is dominated by minerals, charcoal and roasted herbs. It is also complex with cinnamon, cloves, blueberry, cherries, blackberry, chocolate, plum, tomato vine, coffee, cigar box, pencil savings, wet earth and stones. Full bodied and balanced. Length greater than 40 seconds. Heaps of unobtrusive tannins. The wine is best drink after 40 minutes. Montrose says this wine will live for a hundred years!

2017 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/16/2017-10/25/2017 (New York City, NY): An opaque crimson blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, this vintage of Montrose approaches perfection. Packed with black currants, fig, licorice, graphite and bittersweet chocolate, it is a full-bodied bruiser with fresh acidity, nicely integrated alcohol and equally well-integrated oak. The wine's tannins still carry substantial grip throughout the layered mid-palate and lengthy finish. This will undoubtedly become a "legendary" Montrose, but will require considerable cellar time. Drink 2030-2060.

Dark Rubingranat, violet reflections, delicate edge whitening, sweet, already ripe dark fruit, a hint of plums, clear herb wort, tender pepper, nuances of cocoa. Straff, shows a good complexity, ripe cherry fruit, good integrated tannins, freshly structured, heart cherries also in the reverberation, spicy back taste. Still needs its time, already has a great length, continues to grow with growing bottle maturity, great future potential. 98+

Tasted after 2011 Montrose. Much more depth on the nose, more generous fruit, more layered and finer, still restrained and backward. On the palate very elegant and complete with wonderful fruit, great acidity, powerful but polished tannins. Generous, spicy, grippy, vibrant. Lots of lift to the long and persistent finish. At least 10 years too young but surely very special. 96-97+

Mineral, stone, and a hint of blueberry aromas. The nose didn't evolve even on the second day. After 3 hours of aeration it starts to awaken with blackberry and subtle dark fruit on the palate. The tannins are grippy but integrated...more than I expected. This is a wine that is altogether powerful, restrained, elegant, vibrant, precise, and light on its feet. I scored the '05 the same but it was much more exciting, because it didn't have as much oak influence as the '10. Will see how this unfolds in the cellar.

Popped and tasted, then decanted for 2 hours, poured back into the bottle for 2.5 hours and served single blind at dinner against the 2009 Montrose, 2009 & 2010 La Dame de Montrose, 2009 & 2010 Ducru Beaucaillou, and the 2010 Provenance Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard.
The first sip, before decanting, was extremely oaky on the nose, but enjoyable, with a surprisingly juicy and smooth palate, but rather closed and surprising not very tannic. This seemed more in 2009 style than the 2009 Montrose which was more tight and tannic. Given the lack of dimension on the nose and closed palate, we decided to decant for a couple hours.
In the blind tasting, this was my favourite, with a huge nose of black fruit, sexy oak, cigar. Although not particularly complex, the nose was really singing. The palate was intense with tons of oak and black fruit, mouth coating on the finish and really smooth. There is a hedonism here that I expect more in 2009 and I thought this was the Ducru 2009 for that reason. After a couple hours in the glass, the wine shutdown again and turned into a total oak bomb.
There was a couple ounces I saved for the next day. The wine was totally fresh still, and surprisingly more fruit and floral notes, with blackberry, black cherry, black currants, and violets. The nose of this wine, along with the 2008 and 2009 Montrose really make me think Pauillac rather than St. Estephe. The palate on this seems almost Napa with the juiciness and richness. The 2010 comes across as a combination of 2008's definition on the nose and 2009's richness on the palate.
I really enjoyed this wine, but its obviously very young. You can drink it now, but I feel it needs time to reveal the complexity that merits Parker's very lofty score. 95++

Chateau Montrose with Mr. Herve Berland (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Very detailed and precise nose displaying fresh black fruits, crushed wild blueberries, blueberry jam, a hint of cassis, licorice, strong lead pencil, rose, milk chocolate and earth. Very polished sensual palate, incredibly concentrated and layered yet airy and detailed, exceptional balance, cool silky blue fruit driven palate impression, the perfect amount of acidity and mineral and an incredibly long silky finish. One of those rare wines that has both the intensity and weightlessness.
66x Parker 100-Pointers from Bordeaux 1947-2010 tasted blind (Switzerland): Tasted blind. Dark purple. Nose of dark, forest notes, eucalyptus, earth, not dissimilar to the Latour 2010 both on nose and palate. Full bodied with excellent structure, fantastic mouth feel as well as length. Young tannins like all 2010's in these flights, a big wait is needed. The more I went back to this wine the more I was impressed. 99+ for now but in 10 years, quite surely three digits. Group score: 18.33, group rank: 23/64
0,2 l Coravin over 2h Deep saturated colour. Completely ripe perfectly pure fruit nose cherry/strawberry that unfolds with aeration, after 1 h rubberish element that disappears with swirling. Palate harmonious and long, no hole, just a steady stream of pure tannic fruit...tannins perfectly fine. The only thing missing is more complexity, probably a matter of time. I remember the 1990 in its youth, it was similar. maybe it was more sexy, but never as perfectly shaped. Very expensive....ordered 6more
Montrose dinner (Singapore): Big dark fruit, sweet but with a solid structure backing it, seems to be closing down but worked well with food, long finish. 94+

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: Amazing complexity and balance, covering a wide spectrum of flavours, not least that St Estephe earth character. The tannins were not quite as sweet / ripe as the 2009, and there is a touch more bell pepper and leaf on the nose. A touch more savoury.

United Cellars Bordeaux tasting 2015 (Harbour 220/L15 131 Macquarie Street): concentrated black currant and crushed rocks, pencil shavings and a certain charcuterie quality. On agitation the charcuterie note grows and is joined by a wonderfully perfumed element. ON the palate the wine is juicy with concentrated black currant, an impression of controlled power. The tannic grip focusses on the front of the mouth the whole travels so long. Very young but I can see the attraction. Very nice.

The 2010 Montrose boasts a deep and primary nose of tarry, licorice inflected cassis and black cherry fruit. On the palate, the wine is dense, crunchy and ripe with lots of fine, sweet structuring tannins—but a touch of alcoholic heat that smudges the finish. While I suspect one can have confidence that this will come into balance, I don't see this ever demonstrating the perfect poise of, say, the young 2005.

Mini vertical of 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2012. Super nose - lovely depth, a bit more restrained than the 2009, finer somehow. Notes of spices, tobacco, ripe dark fruit. Tight and grippy on the palate, spicy, powerful, with more depth and length than the 2012. This clearly needs more time and is at this stage less charming than the 2009, but will be amazing in 10+ years or so. 95-96+(+?)

31 Vintages of Château Montrose: 1928-2010; 5/2/2015-5/3/2015: Dark, serious, much more restrained than the ’09 and thus much more difficult to evaluate. Structured, but big fruit beneath. Will this ever match the ’09? I am not sure I will live to see.
MW Institute 2010 Bordeaux Tasting (Sydney, Australia): Graphite, stones, pencil and red berries. Really quite structured on the palate at the moment, there is plenty of class lurking but it is really tightly wound up. Needs a whole lot of time from here.

Opaque black core with purple rim. The wine was initially too cold probably around 14 degrees. The nose was more closed and just gave up aromas of plush leather and gravel. As the wine warmed it opened up. Blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherries, mint, cedar, coffee beans ,cafe au lait, wet earth and roses. The palate was super viscous. There were intense flavours of primary fruit as reflected on the nose. Beautifully balanced. Elegant and masculine. Loads of tannins but unobtrusive. Riedel bordeaux glass. Aired for 50 minutes. Serving temperature 14-18 degrees. Would I drink this wine now? Yes

This heavenly wine has an opaque black core that froths purple. The nose revealed blueberries, pencil shavings, blackcurrant, charcoal, incense, cafe au lait, cigar box, chocolate, blackberry, cherries, raspberries and wet earth. I think it is still a little closed. The body is huge. It has good balance and great length. The tannins are massive. The style is modern and it has a definite masculine character. Accessed via the Coravin system-first pour. In the decanter for one hour. Riedel bordeaux glass. Drunk at 16 degrees. Montrose says the wine will live to 2100. I will be long gone!

A very drinkable wine, challenging the reputation of the 2010 vintage as being a bold and tannic vintage vs. 2009. This wine is softer than the 2009 and quite drinkable now.
Lots of power with a laser like beam of red, bright fruit along the long and energetic finish.
This is a wine that I can see reaching perfection over time and will definitely be worth gathering and enjoying for the next 20 years with intrigue and pleasure.

From a blend of 53% Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the wine is inky color. With a nose of smoky tobacco leaves, cassis, blackberry, cocoa, the wine has no trouble establishing its presence. Big, rich, packed with fruit, ripe tannins, freshness and the structure to age for decades, this demands time and is going to be well worth the long wait!

Bordeaux 2009 vs. 2010 - Check in on 50 well known Chateaux: Very dark purple. Reserved nose of dark fruit, cut hey, black tea and forest floor. A bit more barnyardy than the 2009. As a matter of fact this strongly recalls Chateau Latour from its aromatic profile. On the palate dense and tannic but not over extracted or drying as the Pavie for example. Needs more time than the 2009 but is just as impressive. I am also sure here that this will be one of the greatest Montrose ever and can take on any of the 1ers when it is ready. Given its closedness even more compelling that this came out as the runner up against all the already flattering Merlots. Wow! 99-100. (WOTN #2 / Group Score 98.4/RP99)
Riper, denser fruit and more coffee/chocolate than the ultra-pure 08, not sure which I prefer, maybe the 08, but this is equally great, it's more a matter of style preference. Certainly this is still near-perfect Bdx.

Montrose tasting with Herve Berland (HK Wine Vault): This is a baby, but a handsome one, and one day it will blossom into a star. But its with immense pleasure to getting a chance to taste such a splendid wine at this stage of its journey. Dark, opaque, and with some time in the glass, clean and focused aromatics of cassis, rose, crushed stone and licorice hit your nose with stride. Rich, creamy palate is packed with black cherry, plum and earth. All these goodies are masked by the tannic backbone at this stage, but the tannins are very fine and not overpowering, because you will be indulged in the long after taste while the tannins are melting away. Outstanding wine, leaving the score at 95 only to leave some room for future add on.

This is 53% cabernet, 37% merlot, 9% cabernet franc. This is astonishingly good wine. It is rich, dense, structured and powerful, but elegant, refined, fresh and uplifting. It has an equilibrium that the 09 can only dream about and is close to perfection.

Loooved the 09, but the 10 is a dark tight brooding beast. No doubt will unfold to be 96/98 and spectacular but right now very hard work . The 09 was plush and rewarding. Buy the 09 unless you want to wait 20 yrs

Inky in color, this is shutting down quickly. Incense, cedar, cassis, creamy vanilla and a minor hint of licorice come forth, after intense swirling. Concentrated, rich, full bodied and deep, the wine is packed with sweet, ripe, dense, black fruits that remain and continue to expand on your palate for at least 40 seconds. Clearly this is one of the great vintages of Montrose. But only patient consumers should consider buying this wine. It could take 20 years to develop and come around.

Tasted at Bordeaux 2010 Arrivage Tasting tonight. Very classic nose of black currant, blue and dark berries, earth, graphite and some mushrooms. Doesn't jump out of glass, relatively closed right now, but very complex, classy and classic. High but perfect tannin and acidity. Extremely long finish. Everything is still very very young but in harmony. This Montrose is built for eternity...

Nose- very similar to 2009 LLC. Dark, rich with pretty elegance to it.
Palate- dark, rich, intense, very good concentration. Grippy, sappy tannins contributed to layered texture. The delicious fruit stood out the most. Great depth. Medium to high acids. Lasting finish. Excellent. Loved this so much.

Barrel sample: Huge spiciness. Sun drenched sandy beach, peppers, aniseed, somewhat backward but still complex. Taste is as tight as you'd expect but has a deep, primordial power rumbling in the back. Long, tight finish. Score: 94-98?

Bibendum Bordeaux 2010 tasting including selected back vintages (Lords Cricket Ground - St Johns Wood, London): If the 07 has all the ingredients in place, but lacks a little in the back end and maybe has toned down the power a bit, well this 2010 edition has taken all the steroids and been on the protein shakes. You are struck with an abundance of power leaping out of the glass. Tremendous concentration and depth on the nose. This is backed up by pretty monstrous tannins and supporting acidity. I think this may have a long future...should be a great wine for the collectors. 94-96+

Dark inky purple right to the rim. Lovely savoury nose of coal dust and toasty oak with a seam of blackcurrant underneath. Huge and very tight. The fruit is there but hidden under a mass of ripe but very grippy tannins. Long dry toasty finish.

Montrose - From a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and a smidgen of Petit Verdot, this represents 64% of the production. Opaque in color, with a nose of coffee, blackberry liqueur, cassis and spice, this is a powerful, dense, massive, tannic wine. Firm and structured, the wine paints your palate with a wall of fruit, tannin and acidity. This big wine will require decades to develop. 95-96 Pts

Lovely nose - very pure and defined expression of fruit. Deep, dark rich cassis - seductive, showing breed; lovely balance, very well managed tannins, quite shut down but all seems in balance. Some dusty tannins on the finish are a worry. 92-95

Decant for >60 mins in small decanter, with great buddy on HK.
Cheers!

Ups and downs, In vino veritas (Tøyen, Oslo): Opened 8 hours before dinner, double decanted 3 prior to serving

Rankings: Me 1/12 | GK 1/12 | CT 3/12.

Group average: 92.2
Group rank: number 38 out of 61 wines

Tasting notes:
Ripe red and blue fruit, Williams and slightly leathery – but pretty closed at this stage. Very dense and concentrated with a bodybuilding type of structure and a palate awash with mouth-coating tannin. This is clearly built for the very long term and may offer loads of pleasure in 30+ years, but very hard to say.

Château Montrose through 6 legendary vintages (Zoom!): 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot - highest ever proportion of Merlot, which was unusually precise and dense in 2010.

Nose is much more closed/less giving than cos almost muted
Tight palate tannins stand out
coal some cassis ok length 92pt
Day2 almost no change half bottle left

This will not reach the aromatic spectrum/complexity of cos 2010, it's years away from drinkability but quite lovely in its way

Deep ruby colour, delicate, restrained nose with well integrated oak. On the palate this seems like a hevyweight who runs like Bolt. Flawless.Great concentration of flavours, lovely sweet fruit!
Obviously still very tannic and drying but, what a wine!

Q1 - 2017 Tasting - Starts with the Letter.... (notes from another taster) (New York, NY): #10 of 17 wines tasted double blind. This was definitely old world in style and very enjoyable. My notes are more minimal here - very good but did not make my top 4. For the group this was second place overall with 11 pennies voted.

0,2 l Coravin over 2h
Deep saturated colour.

[LFW's Château Montrose Dinner with Herve Berland at Saint Crispin Restaurant, Melbourne; 53CS, 37M, 9CF, 1PV; Alc 13.8%, pH 3.65; 64% of production] Broodingly black, purple edge. Elegant, lifted, slightly leafy blackcurrant blackberry bouquet with mineral, purple flowers, crushed rocks, blueberry, boysenberry, cassis, licorice, tobacco, cocoa, vanilla & fully absorbed cedary oak notes. Full, juicy, fresh, ripe, intense, dense, profound, concentrated, lush, multi-layered black fruit flavors, emboldened with plenty of superfine grippy tannins, unobtrusive velvety extracts & lively fine acidity, totally devoid of the usual youthful asperity, perhaps obfuscated by the wealth of rich fruit; an extraordinary wine of impeccable balance & seamless integration of fruit & structure, amazing density & laser-sharp precision. Very long, rich, lingering finish. (99+).
