Decanted for ~2-hrs prior to serving. Had been 4-yrs since I last had it... Golden-yellow, of darker hue than the '06 Pavillon Blanc that was served alongside it. Slight sweet nose of tropical fruits/herbs on the nose, this felt somewhat oily/dense on the palate, with a very pronounced spicy note. Rounded body, with not much tension/minerality as compared to the '06 PB. Medium-finish. Don't think this will improve any further - a nice/easy drink now...

From a half bottle. This 2006 drinks quite well today with tertiary aromas increasing the complexity and a beautifully softened and structure, yet still enough freshness and tension to keep it sharp. Easily 92+ points today. For more the wine would have to have more complexity and a better precision.
TN: Citrus, sea salt minerality, nutty notes and herbs on the nose and palate. Medium intensity and not hyper precise as in the best years. The highlight is the creamy texture paired with a high, but round and well-integrated freshness which make this wine very balanced and harmonious. Medium length with a citrus driven finish.
Decanting: Not decanted. It gained a bit of intensity with some air. I would decant the wine for one or the other hour.

This has really developed over the last two years, and has improved. The wine is dominated by peach and citrus fruits with vanilla and floral hints. The acidity is excellent and it is has great depth and balance. It does benefit from an hour in the decanter. I will be in no rush to consume my remaining stock as it has a structure for the long haul.

Good wine; a little too oaked and lacking acidity for my preference in a white. Full bodied (maybe due to the oak?) with lots of stone fruit, esp. peach. I'm guessing white Bordeaux is not my wheelhouse.

Half bottle format. The wine showed tropical fruits, honey, and ripe apricot on the nose, fruits were quite rich on the palate but not much acidity to support the finish, slightly oaky made the finish a bit dry. 5% semillon, 5% sauvignon Gris, 90% sauvignon blanc.

Monday night blinds (Home (Noe st)): (non-blind - my wine) Medium gold color. Nose has waxy reduction (rubber ball) - possibly due to semillon?, with slight underripe peach, faint underripe mango. No noticeable pyrazines. Slight orange creamsicle. Dry, M+ body, M+ alcohol - feels 13.5%, high acid, slight bitterness from oak (not phenolic) There's a modest impression of buttercream and freshly-sanded wood, suggesting new oak - maybe 12 months in 20% new French oak barrels, or equivalent treatment. The finish is long, with underripe peach, underripe mango, and Meyer lemon. There's a slight yogurty aspect to the finish - possibly lees or malo or both.
My guess at production methods (knowing this is a BDX Blanc but not much more): -Given the reductive character and lack of pyrazines, this is likely a semillon-dominant blend (60% semillon, 40% Sauvignon blanc). [Wrong - 90% Sauv blan, 5% sauv gris, 5% semillon] -Ripe grapes were likely hand-selected, crushed, and fermented warm (there aren't a lot of fruity light aromas) in an oak vessel or neutral vessel. -The acid character suggests it went through full malo. -It went through elevage for ~12 months in 20% new French oak, or equivalent (which explains the color) [higher - 50% new barrels] [Also aged on lees with regular bâtonnage for 12 months]
This is a decent example of a high-end Bordeaux blanc. It shows great concentration of flavor, persistent length, and strong balancing acidity. It doesn't display the typical pyrazinic/key lime pie notes of the best examples.
Producer Website: Grape varieties : 90 % sauvignon blanc / 5 % sauvignon gris / 5 % sémillon Yield : 30 hl/ha Fermentation in barrel: 50% in new barrels from our integrated cooperage, 50% in barrels used for one previous vintage. Ageing on the lees with regular bâtonnage (stirring with a stick) for 12 months

Golden colour, aromoas of mushroom, a hint of rotting greens, marzipan too. Very little fruit on the nose but quite a lot else! The palate has a richness and depth that reminds of a white Rhone. It really wasn't what I was expecting and if this is typical of a 10 year old smith haut lafitte id rather drink it younger when there's more fruit. Interesting and quality wine nonetheless.

I continue to be underwhelmed by expensive-ish white Bordeaux. despite being 10 years old, this retained a lot of youthful character aside from the color, which was almost an artificial bright yellow. The most striking note on the nose was a vanilla cream, which continued to the palate, along with a grilled pineapple, lemons a slight nuttiness and strong mineral notes on the finish. The best thing you could say for this wine is that it was elegant, but while there were flashes of inspiration, it was largely disappointing, which makes it all the more frustrating. This would probably be best suited for a tasting menu pour with a very delicate fish dish. For about half the price, I feel I could get a more robust version from Dragonette (Grassini) or a more interesting aged profile with an older Boulay Sancerre.

Wines & Steak in Toronto (Le Select Bistro, Toronto, Canada): This was one of the first times I've really engaged with a Bordeaux blanc and I thought it was excellent. Reminded me a lot of a honeycomb - great sweetness and a touch of waxiness coming from the Sémillon. Which I understand was much less represented than the Sauv Blanc in the blend, but dominated nonetheless. Just a touch of lime coming through from the SB. Very full bodied. Very good.

Started off to a choppy start, a distinct cork smell plagued the nose, not tca corked, but literally smelled like the cork stopper. Air seemed to help a little as the scent faded somewhat, but it still present for the duration of the night. Rather a shame, as the palate itself was very good. While on the rich side, it still had a lot quality Sav Blanc characteristics, slightly grassy, chlorophyll, pronounced mineral edge, and a beautiful golden color. The back half carried a smoky, almond filled finish that avoided any oxidative traits (which I generally do not like). Hard to say where this goes from here, so I will err on the side of caution and drink my other bottle within the next 2 years. Had the nose been performing, this could have really been excellent.

Friday Night Tasting in Toronto (VinT's Place): This pours a medium golden straw yellow. The nose is quite boisterous, deep and rich of pine, cedar, lemon curd, herbs, chalk, honeydew melon and flecks of caramel. The palate comes across just a touch bitter replaying many of the same notes as the nose. The thing I always find surprising about SHL Blanc is that I get essentially zero Sauvignon Blanc character (ie grass) despite the fact that is makes up the majority of the blend. Still quite an impressive and unique wine.

Dinner @ YW's place (Chez YW): This was decanted well over an hour. Very fresh nose of tropical fruits. On the palate - oak, fruits, acidity appear to be well integrated already, delivering a good length. However, it didn't develop that "creamy" note (that I like) that the Pavillon Blanc did the other day. Would rate the PB higher/better... Wonder if this SHL Blanc will improve furthur with extended cellarage. Let's see...

I don't have so much experience with white Bordeaux, but this was quite lovely. Somewhat austere, high acidity and not so much fruit, but somehow still very interesting and compelling. Bordeaux 1999 overview (Restaurant Boreas, Heeze): Straw yellow in the glass. Rich, bulky bouquet hinting at butterscotch, oak, vanilla milkshake and creme brulee. On the palate this shows ripe fruit but the structure and mouthfeel are still tight, concealed and stubborn. At the moment it seems a little bit unbalanced. Too young. Oak has yet to integrate. Potentially outstanding wine. For now, 17.5/20

This was the wine I chose for celebrating the good news from my first year assesment in the MW course. Beautiful lemon-gold colour. Tight and fragrant nose suggesting flowers, citrus fruit, toasty oak and hints of grass. Very elegant. Fat and full-bodied on palate with balancing acidity and long mid-palate. Peach, quince, honey, toast and roasted hazelnuts contribute to a complex array of flavours. An evolved and harmonious wine that can keep over the next 5-7 years. Amazing finesse. Mature Bordeaux Indulgence @ my place (Netherlands): Medium yellow. Very floral presentation: honeysuckle, vanilla, apricot, butterscotch, mocca, almond and asian spices. Fierce and provoking attack, due to notable acidity. Tightly knit and slightly reticent now. Extremely long and persistent finish, which is clearly marked by bitterness. Way more oily and creamy than the previous wine. Great wine in need of a couple of years in the cellar. 18/20

[Heart’s Delight dinner] Very aromatic and perfumed nose, sweet limes, minerals, green herbs; full nose with a deep set of aromas, even in its youth here; sweet fruit in the mouth, but there is a powerful surge of acidity that envelopes the palate early on; the fear of it overtaking the fruit fades as a nice balance of fruit and acidity emerge; this is a wonderfully balanced wine and one of the best of their whites that I have tasted; if this will keep its balance and poise as it ages, this may be their best yet effort. (17.5) Tasted again at the Château during the New York Commanderie’s visit with largely consistent notes.

Pop and pour. Nice tropical nose of pineapple, mango and citrus fruits - oak is definitely prominent , but expected for a SHL Blanc. This is pretty young, but I'm not sure how long it will go as it does seem to lack a little acid on the palate. Otherwise, the palate is a tad creamy (the oak) with a nice mix of fruits and spices. It gained a little complexity over the time it was open, but probably due to warming up from fridge temp. I was a pretty big fan, but wish the oak was a tad lower. I'll wait a few years to open my next bottle to see how this stands up over time.

I'm not a fan of whites in general but I loved this wine. (I'm so tired of acidic oak bomb chards!) The notes below are all over the place on the acid, with one person saying no acid, and another saying very high. It's just right for me, which is just enough to keep things fresh. Very round and smooth on the palate, with hints of apricots and pineapple. It was a crowd favorite at dinner, including the French chef.

WFA Bordeaux 2005/2006 Tasting by the Wine Review (Suntec Convention Centre, Singapore): Very good, but just a shade less substantial than the Domaine de Chevalier. Lovely nose. Grapefruit, pink guava juice, pineapples, ripe gooseberries and grassy herbs all in a pretty melange. Nicely balanced on the palate, with mouth-coating yellow fruit flavours with a tropical edge along with little grapefruity notes. Rich, but fresh. Finish was longish and sappy. Not quite having the shape and focus of the 2005, but this more than made up for it in charm. Very nice.

Trip to Bordeaux; 8/9/2009-8/14/2009: (tasted in the chateau) This is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sauvignon Gris, 5% Semillon and it has spent 11 months in 50% new oak. It has a pure golden color. The nose is wonderful with white flowers and fruits. The oak is evident but in perfect balance with the fruit. It is so fatty and full and a with a long aftertaste. This Grand Vin will require time. Give it 3-4 years and it wll become trully gorgeous.

Dry, M+ body, M+ alcohol - feels 13.5%, high acid, slight bitterness from oak (not phenolic)
There's a modest impression of buttercream and freshly-sanded wood, suggesting new oak - maybe 12 months in 20% new French oak barrels, or equivalent treatment.
The finish is long, with underripe peach, underripe mango, and Meyer lemon. There's a slight yogurty aspect to the finish - possibly lees or malo or both.
My guess at production methods (knowing this is a BDX Blanc but not much more):
-Given the reductive character and lack of pyrazines, this is likely a semillon-dominant blend (60% semillon, 40% Sauvignon blanc). [Wrong - 90% Sauv blan, 5% sauv gris, 5% semillon]
-Ripe grapes were likely hand-selected, crushed, and fermented warm (there aren't a lot of fruity light aromas) in an oak vessel or neutral vessel.
-The acid character suggests it went through full malo.
-It went through elevage for ~12 months in 20% new French oak, or equivalent (which explains the color) [higher - 50% new barrels]
[Also aged on lees with regular bâtonnage for 12 months]
This is a decent example of a high-end Bordeaux blanc. It shows great concentration of flavor, persistent length, and strong balancing acidity. It doesn't display the typical pyrazinic/key lime pie notes of the best examples.
Producer Website:
Grape varieties : 90 % sauvignon blanc / 5 % sauvignon gris / 5 % sémillon
Yield : 30 hl/ha
Fermentation in barrel: 50% in new barrels from our integrated cooperage, 50% in barrels used for one
previous vintage.

Potentially outstanding wine. For now, 17.5/20
