Medium ruby with a tiny rim of garnet. The nose exhibits pronounced dark fruits with herbs and a lovely freshness. (Probably from the medium plus acidity.) The palate is dry, full body with juicy dark fruit and lovely fine grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon really adds elegance. The 2022 is now available in Canada for $124. Such a great value that will continue evolve and impress. Love it.

After a two hour decant, the nose is very pretty with kirsch, honeysuckle, and dark fruits, with hints of pepper and mint. Good integration of fruit and ripe tannins that caress the palate and feature a dark-fruited, herbal character. A moderate finish. Perhaps would merit a better score if the finish left an exclamation point, but enjoyable and holding well. No rush to drink, but I don't see an upside, and will drink my last bottles within the next five years or so.

Opened 2 hours in advance, pouring a glass to check it out during that time and to open the neck of the bottle.
Opted for not decanting and choosed Zalto burgundy stems to follow the evolution during dinner. Last previous bottle I opened was in 2015
Deep dark ruby, still very young in color.
The nose is very focused on mature black currant, black cherry and cassis. A touch of more balsamic notes lingering around; spearmint and liqorice. After the first phase it starts showing more earthy notes, some wet leather but always very clean en focused.
Balance is the motto of this wine. Complex but not over complicated.
In the mouth the acidity shows its nice presence while the tannins are fully integrated. velvet touch. Medium long finish.
In the last 7-8 years it has lost a little bit of the previous exuberance, although very elegant, and gained that earthy touch. That said it hasn't changed so much.
Kept in climat/humidity controlled cellar
Wish I had more bottles of this 2004.

A lovely, maturing Cabernet that really speaks of Tuscany. It is a bright-fruited, energetic wine that would have been more impressive if not sandwiched between 1995 Latour and Montelena.

Colour suggests middle age. Forward nose with strawberry, cassis and red cherry and touch of earthy notes. Palate is impeccably balanced with just a touch of ripe tannins at the finish. Likely not getting better but very good drinking now and for few years to come.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark garnet color. Well integrated tannin. Aromas of ripe fruit, eucalyptus and light hints of smoke and tobacco. Very delicate finish.Very similar to a Bordeaux. To drink now in my opinion.

Decanted 2 hours. Dark garnet. Restrained bouquet of cassis but this was vibrant and full on the palate. Dark fruit, some eucalyptus and tobacco leaf, fine tannins and an acidic line that gave a long, lifted final.
Polished and complete. Drinking well now although I think I preferred this a bit less tertiary - say around 10 years post vintage.

Wine tasting dinner - sundry HQ (At home): Bordeaux blend (CS+Merlot) from Toscana. Tasted blind I. I had to guesses: It could be a warm Bordeaux year or it could be a super Tuscan. It was the last. What surprised me a lot was the vintage, We were back in 2004. It was impossible to guess based on the colour and aromas. Plenty of years left.

Perhaps this is an off bottle but this is very disappointing with stewed fruit, gritty tannins, and poorly integrated acidity. Generally speaking, other than Merlot, I have felt that most international varietals don’t perform all that well on Italian soil. Of course there are exceptions.
I have one more bottle but I’m going to hold that with the possibility that this wine is still too young.

Splash decanted for 30 minutes and drank over 2 days. No detailed notes. Even tho clearly old and old-world, it needed some time to open up. Smoother the second day. Multiple, complex flavors that were more interesting than enjoyable.

Lovely and ripe fruit without being "boiled" or overdone. Needs 1-2 hours of air but after that it shows plenty of acidity and depth. Still quite a young wine but it ready to drink as it really has opened up nicely.

From double-magnum. Over dinner, no formal notes. Hardly any discolouration, very dark. Expressive dark berry fruit, tobacco, spices, great depth on the nose. On the palate still fairly tight from this format, grippy tannins, great acidity, generous fruit. Very long and lingering. 92-94?+

I bought this wine more than 10 years ago, after one particularly pleasant summer spent traveling through Tuscany. For reasons I can't recall, Mrs. L and I drove hurriedly through Maremma to get to Grosseto, so we could not stop at this estate. The wine is inky dark and still young after all these years, with a sweet and slightly hot alcoholic edge that tickles the back of the throat. The deep, ripe berry flavors bring back memories of hot Tuscan summers. There is already much complexity here despite the wine's youthfulness. Still, I will wait a few more years for the tannins to soften before opening another bottle.

Drank at restaurant, decanted for 15 mins before first taste. If served blind, the initial whiff tells me Bordeaux. Taste initially was fruit forward, with a little medicinal finish. Drank best after 2 hours. Dark fruits follows by acidity, memories of Tuscany, med to med+ body, slight grainy tannin, leatherish, medicinal now more herby. Plenty of fruits and acidity to continue cellar, wine was pleasing!

Maybe the grilled chicken with Piri Piri sauce (slightly spicy) was the cause, but this wine should have been outstanding but somehow, while still very good, did nothing for me. Sure it is somewhere above 90, but is it in a slump, was the decant too short, somehow pleasure was limited.

1ère expérience avec ce vin. Base neck. 92-93

This was, in a word, lovely. Been saving it for quite some time, but glad I got to it when I did. Perfectly balanced Cab/Tuscan blend. No rough edges at all. I feel like it's ready now. Might get "better" with more age, but with one sort of "better" may also come a different sort of vanishing fruit. Just my musing. VERY good right now.

Decanted 1 hour. Dark garnet with suspended sediment, faint bricking. Dark fruit bouquet with some ripe blueberry overtones mingling with a faint spice note. Picked up some tarry somewhat medicinal notes on the bouquet as well and noted this was 14 percent. Round entry, medium bodied, dark cherry palate with an acidic streak pairing off with ripe and sweet fruit. Dusty fine tannins and just a hint of oak on the long final.
Lovely balance here, if somewhat lacking in complexity. Suspect this is on a broad plateau and while it is in no danger of tipping over into acidity I doubt there is much room to gain interest at this point.

Saturday night with friends (Aperitif RVC): First bottle was flawed. In need of more time, dense and redolent of olives. Didn't budge much through the night but suggested more terroir than I get from most non-indigenous Italian varieties.

Pop'n'poured and followed in the glass for the whole evening.
The wine looks dark ruby colored with medium legs. Youthfull appearance and no sediment in the bottle.
At the nose there are blackberry, blueberry, black currant (cassis), prune, coffee and black pepper. After an opening quite closed, the nose keeps evolving in the glass throughout the evening. Complex and fascinating nose with lots of life left.
The mouth is very elegant and astonishing with great tannins perfectly integrated in a smooth texture. The body is medium. The acidity is medium high and the finish is loooong.
A great wine. Sexy and elegant!

A Matter of Taste tasting (London, Saatchi Gallery): Just limited notes. Beautifully ripe fruits, sweet spices, some minerals, beautiful fresh acidity and round and soft tannin with still enough power for some more ageing. Until 2020 will be no problem. Beautiful and concentrated wine.

A Matter of Taste: London Edition (Saatchi Gallery, Chelsea): This was graciously poured by Elisabetta Geppetti, who was probably looking for a well-deserved break by this point! While clearly a remarkable wine, this was not its best showing, I’m afraid, coming across as a touch green, and very tannic, without either silkiness or power; I thought is was the Syrah dominating on the nose, with pepper and restrained fruit, and later learned through the kind help of CT member Lipsman that this was the first year they used Syrah rather than Alicante; rich, red fruit on the palate; fully integrated oak.
Quite open and expressive on the nose. Very elegant on the palate. The tannins provide good structure and grip, but are very ripe and round. Nice minerality and freshness. Silky finish with good length. Approachable but no rush at all. 92-93+

This is drinking beautifully. I think it is a bargain at $70. Red fruit, soft tannins--after 1-2 hrs decanting. Silky, like a great Barolo. It's a super Tuscan blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Alicante---though some sources say that in 2004 the Alicante was replaced with Syrah.

Definitely too expensive for what you get (today), even if this is a great wine. With the kind of patience that I obviously didn't have, you stand a good chance of enjoying a very fine Maremma. I'd give it at least 5 more years to come around.

Popped, poured, consumed over two days. Much better on 2nd day. Still extremely youthful, took a lot of air for it to fill out. Bursting with both fruit and structure, this seems packed for a long evolution. Cassis, cigar box, iron/beef blood, just a few of the nuances vying for attention.

This one shows everything a supertuscan should. Dark red cherry and raspberry with a dark chocolate, toasted wood and just a touch pine sap; everything Tuscan. Quite different this time than a couple of years ago and surprisingly this bottle seemed younger now. That said the nose was a little reticent yet with very good complexity and depth of fruit - which this time was more plummy, blacker than last time. Also discernible were notes of licorice, cedar and graphite. Quite full bodied with robust tannic structure, good acidity and depth of fruit. Strong and impressive wine which coped very well with difficult dishes such as beef tartar and a salty truffle flavored italian pizza. However when compared to the Leoville Barton 2004 which we had together I felt that at this stage you sort of struggle with the strenght of this wine while the Barton rolls along effortlessly with incomparable elegance and lightness of touch.

Some kind of funk was revealed initially, which was perceived by some at the table as cork taint, but gradually it faded away. Dark plums, crushed berries, vanilla, baking powder, fennel, licorice, coffee and hints of leather and corn flower on the nose. Still quite youthful, unlike the bottle opened 18 months ago. Full-bodied with massive but juicy tannins, rich berry and plum fruit, balancing acidity and a long aftertaste. More on the powerful than on the elegant side at this stage, but complexity is there and the wine is extremely food-friendly and versatile despite its power.

--- COLOR: Deep Garnet with medium-garnet rim NOTE: As good as (if not better than) the 2001 Casanova di Neri Tenuta Nuova. Not pure Sangiovese here, but this is lovely from nose to finish. Strong plum and red cherry jam, like a BdM, but mouth also brings in blackberry juice, tar, nutmeg and cinnamon. Tart cherry finish, but invites you back for another refreshing sip instead of repelling you. Best Italian wine I've ever had. Give my last bottle 2 more years.

Big, alcoholic and a bit disjointed. Lots of ripe fruit and acidity, but I found it hollow on the midpalate, and short on the finish. And way too much alcohol (bottle says 14% but it does not carry it well).

See previous notes. Blackberry, plum, bread pudding, milk chocolate, basil, tobacco, rock quarry and white flowers. This is the most complex nose yet, and she is really developing nicely. No reason to wait with a two hour decant, however, if you wish to wait, no harm will be had - this has such a long life ahead. I just love the fine and polished tannins and structure, while showing balanced, bright acidity. Drink 2012 -.

Amazing wine. Has a Cabernet typicity with aromas and flavours of cedar and some herbaceous notes along the berry fruit but has also a tell-tale cherry, leather and earthy character that speaks of Tuscany. Nose is developing, quite more evolved than you would expect for a 2004 and has intensity power and refinement. Palate is also rounded with excellent tannins and an amazingly long finish. Top Bordeaux blend of super second level with many years of life ahead of it.

Drank at my birthday dinner with my wife Sophia and my friend "B. Dylan". Dark garnet. Initially restrained, but started to express itself after an hour in the decanter. Dark cherry, leather, cedar, earth and esspresso roast on the nose. Medium-full bodied, rich but very refined with soft tannins, rich fruit and high acidity. Amazingly long aftertaste. A great wine that speaks of its place of origin despite being made mainly from international grape varieties. Already enjoyable with good cellaring potential. Glad to have one more bottle.

Decanted two hours and enjoyed over the next three. Garnet core fading to a ruby rim with orange hints. Potent aromas of red cherry, blackberry, vanilla bean, and mint introduce a palate of strawberry, tar, thyme, and crushed raspberry. A great elegant and concentrated texture surrouns the wine. The acidity and tannins are prevalent at this point but in good measure.
I did not know what to expect from my first Saffredi, but this was surprising. The palate was not as full and intense as I expected; instead I found it elegant. The texture and length are shining points of this wine. There are also interesting signs of age in the multi-layered color and tertiary notes on the edge of the palate.

Even though there is no Sangiovese in this wine I thought it displayed that typical farmyard character I usually associate with this grape. Fragrant nose of dark, dried fruit, spices and farmyard. Nice and smooth palate. Bitter cherry fruit, dusty tannins and earthy flavors. While the fruit is somewhat polished, this is a super delicious wine. A positive surprise.

Decanted for two hours. Black and purple. Invitingly intense milk chocolate, bread pudding, blackberries and cream, pencil lead, rosemary and hot rocks. Yes, the nose is really that complex and enthralling. Extremely layered and the fine - juicy tannins really bring this wine together. There's a major "WOW" factor that exists here in regards to the overall complexity. Tranquil in terms of balance. A stunning finish that lasts for over a minute. Some time might help, however, now is not bad. My first experience with this Maremma delight and I am almost speechless.....almost. A Super Tuscan that will pique your interest. Nose: Rich, black fruit, a touch of cedar, and a hint of rosemary, and white flowers. Palate: Deep, but sweet tannins; wonderfully ageworthy. Definitely let it breathe for a couple hours or even cork, plug up, and drink the next day. Black fruit initially, with a bright cherry midpalate leading to a long finish with those sweet tannins that make you dream of a time 4 years from now when you pop open another bottle to drink. Definitely a young wine, but totally drinkable now. Try to stash away a couple bottles if you can, though, and you should be rewarded. Nice acidity, great balance. A spectacular example of the region without paying hundreds for it. A great QPR, IMHO. Hard not to drink now....

definite cedar, i like the raw dough detection. this wine hits every crevasse of your mouth. bright cherry and the cab is seemingly dominant. i dont know what the blend is but is very much cab driven. as good of a finish as this wine has, it is missing something...im hoping that in its youth it has not unveiled its full potential. the nose is also a tad muted in my opinion. perfectly integrated tannins, well balanced. im giving it a 93 because i think it has 96-97 potential based on structure. finish is still going...glad i have 6 more. i highly recommend this wine. im young and dont have much experience with super tuscans, but i would have thought that this was from cali. changing my score its definitely higher than 93. its been open for almost 2 hours and it is absolutely singing right now!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like the '04 Pegau, this wine is drinking great for its age and another crowd pleaser. It is also half the price of Sassicaia and Ornellaia of the same vintage and I think this is a much better wine. Softer and lighter than its higher priced neighbors, with a nose of raw dough and flowers. While a well-rounded wine, it has a vibrant acidity that allows it to stand up to Italian food. It was great with pizza, but it could also stand up to a bolognese sauce.

Lovely and ripe fruit without being "boiled" or overdone.
Needs 1-2 hours of air but after that it shows plenty of acidity and depth.
Still quite a young wine but it ready to drink as it really has opened up nicely.

Base neck.

Brought to Zachy's auction at Daniel - Similar to last note, nose of raw dough and flowers (almost Champagne like) with great acidity and cherry flavors.

Very smooth and balanced wine which is drinking suprisingly well right now. I wonder how well this will age since it already seems not to need any further aging. Delicious

Initially barnyardy thing going on with first whiff. This settles down to a normal rustic italian nose. Notes of deep cherry and earth on the nose. Nice bright acidity in the mouth, with round fruit flavors. Turns out to be a beautiful wine with some air.

Really like this wine. Closed down at first but with air had that typical Italian rustic thing going on with enough ripe fruit and flowers to give it a fine personality. Went great with food. Medium bodied with a smooth finish. Very well made.

Rich and rounded, cherry, leather, mint, mineral and roasted chestnut nose. Full bodied, ripe and graceful palate with a complex and integrated finish.
4.5/5

Like the '04 Pegau, this wine is drinking great for its age and another crowd pleaser. It is also half the price of Sassicaia and Ornellaia of the same vintage and I think this is a much better wine. Softer and lighter than its higher priced neighbors, with a nose of raw dough and flowers. While a well-rounded wine, it has a vibrant acidity that allows it to stand up to Italian food. It was great with pizza, but it could also stand up to a bolognese sauce.

Wine Spectator Grand Tour (Las Vegas): Along with Don Melchor this was WOTN . Huge berry aromas with some licorice or cherries or something delicious. Super silky mouthfeel with pefectly integrated tannins. had everything in the right place. Super fresh with great ripe fruit.
