Wine 1: Louis Roederer Collection 243 NV Champagne.
Paired with crab salad bites on crisps.
One of my favorite big name NV champagnes. Delicate and fine bubbles. Citrus and brioche nose. Lemon, brioche, green apple on the palate. Great mouthfeel and high acidity. Great stuff!

From the batch disgorged February 2022 and released August 2022 (as revealed by the Louis Roederer app scanning the label).
The nose is quite forward but a little difficult to pin down: there's some minerality, just a touche of brioche, and a faintly herbal note which I'm struggling to name.
The palate starts with crisp red fruit, but the mid-palate is quickly rather creamier and soft, before a finish which stays just on the right side of cloying, but isn't as crisp as I prefer. For my taste I feel that the dosage (8g) is a little high.
Overall, at this point I much prefer the 242 which I drank a few weeks ago. There's nothing wrong with this 243; it's a very good wine but it's just a bit bland and lacking in freshness for my palate, perhaps due to the rather ripe 2018 base vintage.

Lovely wine as has consistently been the case with such good balance. The nose has green apple, some quinine bitterness, hints of hibiscus and with air a suggestion of ground almonds. Palate so more-ish with perfectly weighted dosage driven sweetness and the bitterness elsewhere. With air the lime cordial component complemented with hints of papaya. Yum

BYOB dinner NOTK (NOTK, Rotterdam): Pale yellow in color, medium intensity with citrus, fire stone, brioche. Opened up a bit more with more air. High acidity, long finish with a bitter note. 2018 base year

This wine is beginning to turn the corner of development, losing its slightly austere and bright edge, mellowing into a refined expression of the Roederer style. All is in balance, and the wine continues to display vivacious freshness, but the autolysis and a roundness of fruit mark this as outstanding.

Beautifully pure and elegant, this is showing notes of citrus, also some lemon zest, ripe orchard fruit, some autolytic notes and also some chalky mineral notes. it‘s medium+ bodied, with good persistence, showing medium-high acidity that is perfectly buffered by just some dosage, very fine mousse too. Good length. A very goodand satisfying Roederer Colllection that is still pretty reasonably priced.

Christmas 2023; 12/24/2023-12/26/2023 (Home): My first bottle of 243. Funnily enough I was just reading earlier that a number of 2018-base/vintage Champagnes are showing themselves to be on the bland side, and certainly this wine was pretty 'blah'. Pleasant structure and nice bubbles meant it definitely provided a Champagne experience, and there was nothing out of place, but also not a great deal to remark on.

Pale lemon in colour with a good bubble trail. Slightly restrained aromas of green apple, applesauce & citrus. On the palate, light bodied green fruit, mostly green apple , citrus/lemon, floral, brioche, biscuit, slightly smoky with a creamy, silky mouthfeel. Perfect for Christmas dinner toasting!

I really enjoyed this. I tend toward the refreshing Grower Champagnes mostly but am starting to want more of this style.
Clear light yellow. Lots of green apple, lemon, with brioche and a bit of caramel. Lots of depth, lemon, mineral, green apple and spent yeast. Lovely dry finish.
Fresh nose of white blossom, ripe apple, lemon zest, and toast. The flavor of the reserve wine is upfront and it is washed out by a lively citrusy acidity that leads to lingering notes of chalk.

So, I haven’t had a Collection Series from Roederer. Thought I’d give the 243 a try. It is nice but very much like all the N/V’s I’ve had from them. If you put a N/V Roederer in my hand blind, I’d tell you this is Roderer. It’s a distinctive style. Just like you couldn’t fool me with any vintage of Silver Oak.
Soft; lemon, lime, both peaches, some blackberries, kiwi, bruised red apple to cider, overripe pineapple, tropical melons, baguette crust, cream, saline, grainy chalkiness, sea fossils, limestone marl, crispy acidity, jasmine, white flowers and a well balanced, nicely structured, not overly polish, 90 second finish.
Made from one-third of the grapes stemming from each of the "La Rivière", "La Montagne" and "La Côte" vineyards, Collection is composed of a base vintage, oak-aged reserve wines and wines from the "Perpetual Reserve", which follows the principles of the solera method and was created in 2012.
The number 243 represents the House’s 243rd blend since its creation. Collection 243 is made from the 2018 vintage to which 10% of oak-aged reserve wines (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) and 31% from the ‘’Perpetual Reserve’’ (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) were added.
26% of the blend undergoes malolactic fermentation. Collection 243 was aged for 3 to 4 years in the cellar. Its dosage is 8 g/litre
This cuvée is comprised of Chardonnay (42%), Pinot Noir (40%) and Pinot Meunier (18%).

2015 Louis Roederer Champagnes (Flor Wines, Portland OR): The nose is more citrus-driven with fresh tones of peaches, biscuits, red apples, yellow flowers, spiced pears, kumquats, and toasty notes. The citrus flavors are balanced but it lacks depth to the nose. The Medium bodied feel is fresh and balanced with integrated, high acidity that is a bit refreshing. This is decent enough, but there is something lacking across the nose and palate that would make this much more enjoyable.
Same mindset as Krug and Jaquesson is the idea with the Collection. 40 - 45% reserve wine. A huge commitment from them. A perpetual tank that is stainless steel. 12 - 13 - 14 -15 -16 is there. The base is 2018. And then young Cristal fruit goes in here as well - about 10% and those are aged in cask. 244, '19 is the base, '18 is in the tank. 95% Pinot and Chardonnay and 5% Meunier. From a Verseray plot. There is some contracted fruit in there as well. One of the largest land owners in Champagne apparently. That might be a ratio of what they make though.
And simply wonderful - secondary notes, fruit expression, elegant palate - it's all here.
15% of this wine is bought fruit, otherwise they could be a grower. Chard and Pinot, Pinot a little bit more. No malo, 7 - 8 grams of dosage.

Pop and pour, from 375mL. Based on 2018 vintage. On the nose: lemon, slate, grapefruit, soft vanilla. On the palate: richly styled with ample lemon and grapefruit, soft vanilla and a touch of almond, balanced by a slate backbone. Quickly becoming one of my favorites.

WSET Notes:
Pale lemon. Fine mousse.
Pronounced on the nose with apple, lemon zest, pear, biscuits, chalk, hazelnut. Developing.
Pronounced and dry on the palate. High acidity, medium alcohol, medium minus body, long finish.
Can drink now but has potential for aging.

2018 base wine with 2009-17 reserve wine added. The result is recognizably Roederer, but more open, with flavors of bubblegum and ginger ale, and a sneakily high acidity.

Champagne appreciation - Louis Roederer: quite a bit of yeast on the nose that then opens to yellow stonefruit and lemony notes. quite round and fresh in the mouth, there are plenty of yeasty notes mingling with the concentrated orchard and citric fruit flavours. a mineral vein and acid streak keep the balance, and there is good persistence.
quite enjoyable if not groundbreaking… and with the edition numbering in place now, vintage "signatures" will make for interesting drinking going forward.
dosed at 8 g/L; blend of 42% Chard, 40% Pinot Noir and 18% Meunier; based on the 2018 vintage (59%), 31% is from a solera-like perpetual reserve spanning 2012-17, and the last 10% from other reserves that go back to 2009.

Flavors of dark fruits similar to the nose, gentle minerals with a slightly more intense yeast note on the palate. A damp earthiness trails onto the finish.
Compared to the Starck, the profile of this is a bit more dark, with a deeper pitch of flavors but missing just a bit of acidity that makes the wine lack a bit of tension. Not exactly a bad thing, just less exciting. Damn, guess it's a bad thing. Flavors are still there though if this profile is more of your style.

This doesn't live up to the standard set by its predecessor. Compared to the 242 this lacks tension and precision, and reminds me more of late iterations of Brut Premier. I reckon it's the 2018 base vintage shining through.a

Lay & Wheeler Summer tasting: 8g/l dosage here, but the overall impression is too sweet, almost cloying texturally. Rich, honeyed and broad with florals and blossom notes. Lemon meringue pie say my notes. It's just too rich for me - I want refreshing and this ain't it.

Made from a blend of 42% Chardonnay, 40% PN and 18% PM, based on 2018 vintage with 31% of 2012 to 2017 reserve wines and 10% 2009 to 2017 reserve wines aged in oak, 8 g/l of RS. Pale golden colour. Medium intensity aroma of lemon peel, yellow plums, quince, delicate smoky hints, white flowers, brioche, honeycomb, biscuits. Medium body, lively and silky with creamy mousse, high acidity, medium+ chalky, citrusy and saline flavour intensity, touch of pleasant bitterness at the finish.

BTG Dinner in SIngapore (Entourage Singapore): By the glass. Lovely effervescence, all too easy to drink. A certain florality which I’ve never got before - the humidity, the contrast with the food? Who knows. Did not embarrass itself by any means, but with the Krug only being 2x by the glass - I know where the smart money is going.

Pop and pour yesterday. Notes from about 36 hrs open (in the fridge in between). On the nose: lemon, a touch of brioche, chalk, vanilla. Mousse still vibrant even on this final glass. On the palate: amazing acidity, fantastic cut, soft vanilla and cream with a slight ginger note. Lovely richness and good length on the finish. Still very young: the 241 I had in Dec left a stronger impression. Probably will soften some hard edges with a little bit of time in the bottle.

First taste of the 243th edition. At least today, not remotly on the same level as the 242nd is. A bit short and boring but without fault. Maybe time will help to fill it out a bit. 89/90 pts.
TN: Fine, round nose with some toasty notes and some lime and minerality. Not overly expressive. The palate is very fresh with fine mousse, some toasty notes and some yellow fruit and minerality. Not overly complex but quite pleasant. I think this is a step down in terms of aromatic density from the 242.

Tasted at the Matter of Taste Zurich, “Champagne Now and Then” Masterclass. William Kelley explained that a lot of externally bought fruit goes into this. But Roederer is working closely with farmers to reduce herbicides (to preserve freshness) and they are also changing the way they use reserve wine. The autolytic notes were more doughy rather than brioche. A fine layer of smoke, green apple and pear fruit. Overall, this felt rather unripe in terms of aroma profile. Palate better, smooth and fresh. I found this offered nowhere near the hedonistic pleasure of the 242, unfortunately. Had another bottle less than a week earlier in a different context and found this to be rather austere.

During a MOT masterclass with William Kelly. Lovely, fresh entry level Champagne, not something I would buy but if you need a solid cellar defender and get rid of your terrible Veuve, Moet, Lanson base Champagne, this is definitely something to go for.

Tight small mousse. Aromas of brioche, green apples. Taste line continues with generous 8g/l dosage that integrates well with fruit and acidity the drives this wine with fantastic focus and intensity. Might just be my my new house champagne. Wow! Excellent and noticably different than 242 with a more pronounced lemon & citrus character.

Served from magnum. This was a bit too linear for me but was refreshing and breezy. White fruit and apple spritz. 90-91

Tasting a few Louis Roederer champagnes (K&L Wine Merchant - Redwood City): Aromas of dark yellow fruits, clean wet stones, and gentle yeasty notes.

Pale gold. Nose of sharp white fruit, a fresh apple, bit of petrol, a bit of ginger. Layers of biscuit, apple core, white pear, and Parmesan on the palate. Fizzy acidity and mineral spine. Longer finish of grapefruit, steely lime, and effervescence. Nicely done. From a half bottle.

Very neutral balance and integration with enough excitement and personality to keep you coming back.
