Drank this at a wine dinner with my wine mates at Kam Boat Teochew Restaurant. Theme of the evening: Wines that start with the letter Y.
Another highlight of the dinner. Gold in colour with amazing balance and acidity. Sweetness countered by fruits, body in harmony with the elements. Apricot, peaches, nectar, honey wax.
What more can one ask from the wine? Amazing. Simply amazing.
Opulent nose of marmalade, runny honey, orange peel, almonds, with wafts of pie crust and baking spice. Rich and concentrated with a full bodied mouthfeel - there is an effortless sense of balance, but this is definitely on the richer side. Better on day two. 94+

Good vintages of Yquem (Chicago, IL): A huge stylistic difference between this and the 2011 alongside -- whereas the 2011 was very much fruit-driven, this was far more botrytis driven, showing plenty of the typical marmalade and bitter orange that you would expect. A good analogue here is the 1983. This is a relatively opulent edition for the post Lur-Saluces era, and it's definitely one that really appeals to my taste and desire for that older, high-oak style. Excellent, and I am very much curious to see where this goes with time.

Hey now, what a beauty!! This is a sumptuous Y'quem.
Complex and then some... what an orchestra of flavors! Peach, apricot, orange, burnt orange, orange marmalade, almond, creme brulee, Grand Marnier (!!!!), grapefruit, fresh acidity and then repeat all. Went on and on.
Still young and will only get better but still delivers great pleasure today.
Bravo

Tasted with Jim Cahill and the ladies at the Clarity restaurant in Vienna: Exquisite with orange rind, bitter almonds and dried apricots, Nicely complex, still young. But, from memory, not better than the 1981 Ch. Laufaurie Peyraguey pulled from my cellar and tasted about a month ago a5 Roberto's...

Deep orange golden colored, medium to full bodied, complex, rich unctuous and elegantly smooth with notes of dried pineapple, candied honey mango and apricot, hints of grapefruit and lemon on a tongue coating finish. https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2023/05/pour-boys-winers-diners-23-cityscape.html

Exquisite. Presents a lovely amber colour, reminiscent of a golden sunset. The nose is an intoxicating blend of honey and apricots, a bouquet that is mirrored in its taste. Additional layers of complexity are revealed through notes of caramel, vanilla, and a hint of spice, adding depth to the honeyed apricot core. The wine is beautifully balanced, with a vibrant acidity that cuts through the sweetness, leading to a long, luscious finish. It's a wine that truly engages all the senses, leaving a lasting impression. Drinking very well already.

FANTASTIC wine: despite its 2007 vintage, this bottle was absolutely perfect: color, nose and mouth !!! Drank with semi cooked foie gras which was marinated with the same wine: what a treat !

Last 2 days of 2022 Naples-palooza; 12/30/2022-12/31/2022 (Casa Mark1npt): I just found my tasting note from last year on this and it is word for word the same as what I scrawled last night. I sense a pattern here: "Just when we couldn’t possible drink any more, Mark pulls this one out. Honey, apricot, Orange rind, honeysuckle and melon. Probably wasted on us drunks but greatly appreciated and enjoyed. Just beautiful."
All still holds true, thank you Mark for sharing this special wine. Again!
Pnp'd what was left of this bottle, coravined some time ago. Still fresh, still energetic, still quite good. It has a linear precision to it, that few other wines possess. If I had longer with this one it may have scored even higher. It's clean, finely delineated, precise, focused, and has all the requisite nose and palate notes one would expect of this offering. Another one that I wish I had more of........not at all like my first experience with it, 2 years ago.
Incredibly smooth with a very long finish that goes on into purpotuity. Darker caramel color than I would expect for a young 2007 vintage. Nevertheless, d’Yquem is always a treat to taste.

Candied citrus, beewax, honey, cooked pear, dried abricot and very sweet in the nose. High acidity on the palate which gives the wine tension. Same aroma's on the palate together with vanilla pudding.
Had this together with some Bleu d'Auvergne (blue cheese) = heavenly
Due to the colour, we all thougt that this wine was much older (1990's), but I think the wine evolved quicker due to the small bottle (375 ml). However due to the acidity and sugar, still has a lot of potential.

Amber color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of lychee, honeysuckle and macadamia nuts. Flavors of honey, lychee, lemon crystals and candied ginger. Bright acidity, full bodied. Drink or hold.

Unctuous, and equally racy, this full, rich, deep glass of sweet pleasure hits all the right marks. Layers of ripe, fleshy, tropical fruits slathered in honey, along with roasted almonds, vanilla, coconut, candied orange rind, and overripe pineapples from start to finish. In a decade, this will be off the hook.

Great ending to a weekend of superb wines. While this may not have the complexity of the better vintages it is still very good. I would drink these up over the next 5 years or so.

A Celebration of Jose; 5/19/2022-5/21/2022 (Madison, WI): Apricot, orange peel, with a perfect balance of sweetness, acidity, and fruit. I would love to revisit this in 10 years to see what additional complexity has developed, but this is very appealing and remarkably easy to drink right now. Not scored.

Château d'Yquem dinner with Sandrine Garbay (Restaurant Zoldering, Amsterdam, NL): Yquem 2007. Not an easy vintage, quite a lot of disease pressure. Full golden colour, quite developed, hints of tobacco and blonde caramel, marmalade and saffron, lovely fruit, rich but slightly low on energy and tension, hint of back end heat. Not one for the ages.

The 07 was interestingly as developed visually as the 99, if not even a bit more. Sandrine Garbay from d'Yquem remarked that this vintage had always aged ahead of its time. It was almost verging on developing the fox colour that I often associate with older d'Yquem. The wine was richer and higher in sugar than the other vintages, a pronounced saffron note kept it in check so it did never get cloying. Still - out of the 4 vintages drunk (19, 17 and 99) this is the one I would prefer in lower dosage / i.e. by the single glass as it's quite rich and unctuous. Lovely juice though to be sure!

Wonderful balance. Everything is in the right place and it’s perfectly poised / complete as per Yquem vs any other desert wine. But: Not the mind blowing experience I was expecting. Didn’t have the energy, verve, complexity, or length of the 03. Delicious but didn’t hit the dizzy heights that Yquem often does. So, hold! (With brioche and foie gras from half bottle, not decanted but left in glass and bottle and drank over 45 mins. Chilled not cold.)

Orange peel, candied apples, honey on the nose. Intensely thick honey, toffee and orange rind on the palate. I drank a bottle of this almost exactly a year ago, and this has deepened not only in color in that time, but in the flavor profile. Goes so well with blue cheese. I'll try my remaining bottles over the next several years to see how this develops more, which I'm sure it will.

Palooza part 2; 7/8/2021-7/10/2021 (Marco Island/Naples): Just when we couldn’t possible drink any more, Mark pulls this one out. Honey, apricot, Orange rind, honeysuckle and melon. Probably wasted on us drunks but greatly appreciated and enjoyed. Just beautiful.
Totally different from '99 Yquem I had on Friday -- that was like rich butterscotch sauce first with fruit second. This was like apricot syrup first, less thick much less butterscotch. Excellent either way, though I'd give the nod to the 99.
Kleur: Vol goudgeel. Prachtige balans. Presented at the conclusion of this evening's dinner in memory of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
rich gold color, heavy cream and marmalade on the decadent nose, on the palate splendidly layered with rich mousse and treacle notes already-but also a good firm structure to carry it off, a dense and viscous Yquem of the highest tier and a complete opposite to the similarly great 1997 enjoyed recently, the decadence is here in full force with gracefulness yet to come in time, honeyed, white chocolate notes with time, this reminds me a great deal of the 1986 and could follow a similarly great path.

There is something hedonistic about drinking a young d’Yquem, especially one from a much heralded vintage. Absolute fireworks in the mouth, perfect balance of searing acidity, sweetness, exotic fruits. More on the one-dimensional side for now, but you can tell this is going to fully develop in about a decade and will certainly outlive me!

Going to call a 'spade' a 'spade' here. Not sure how this grades out as it does. It's thin in the glass and in the mouth. Clean? Yes. But thin, and light. My first ever experience with this Chateau.....I must confess I am a bit disappointed. There's some honey and light yellow fruit but that's about it. Sorry.
I don't have any detail note after a a long dinner with heavy drinking. d'Yquem is religion for lovers of sweet wine. I shall have a bottle of 1986 waiting to be opened on my 99th birthday, the year halley's comet return on 2061. :) Still extremely youthful. Approachable, but will improve for the next 10++ years

The 2007 Chateau d’Yquem is a flashy Sauternes. A bright array of sexy new oak spices. Generous ripe mango and pineapples. Young but lovely to drink now. (93/100)

There are not many wine experiences that surpass Chateau d’Yquem in an excellent vintage.
The 2007 was expressive and generous, with gobs of pineapple, melon, apricot, creme caramel and honey. Enough acidity showing through the baby fat to not be overdone, all capped with a 2 minute finish. Nectar of the gods type stuff.
Label showed this left the Yquem cellar in 2017, which explains the wonderful bright yellow color. Purchased 6 at auction, the rest can be drank anytime between now and the next 50 years.

Opened two glasses using Coravin as a Valentine’s Day treat. This is my FIRST D’YQUEM EXPERIENCE after having only read about this wine for the last twenty-five years. Many people consider this perhaps the greatest wine in the world and it feels pretty great to have the ability to taste it myself. Obviously I am going to have to guard against confirmation bias in this note.
Wine is a really remarkable golden orange which changes hue in different light. Really never seen anything like this.
On nose, wine appears sound. Deeply aromatic with notes of honey, pineapple, caramel. Cream and candied apricot. Tiny undertone of lime.
On palate, wine is sound. High acid, zero tannin, very full body (creamy), high alcohol, incredibly long finish. Strong buttered honey, citrus, and caramel notes on palate, with a long buttered pastry and grapefruit finish.
This is like no other Sauternes - or any wine - I have ever had. This is actually a remarkable wine. The hype is real. Would be interesting to taste other top Sauternes houses without the renown of D’Yquem to see if there’s a value sweet spot elsewhere. But in the meantime, this stuff is pretty darn magical.
A lush, creamy and well-developed version of this classic Sauternes, presenting all the signature notes (apricot, pineapple, peach and vanilla being the most evident) in a seamless and powerful format. Huge upside from here, of course.

Peach, nectarine on the nose, full creamy, intense body, soft and a bit creamy, but silky and so plush and nice, but quite sweet; long finish, very good, barely aged at all, this was super clean and young, pure; will go the distance, and loved this, but preferred the spicy orange peel character of the climens '07. 10 years on dinner at Conrads.

Rich; crisped honey, apricot, dried pineapple, almond, orange, clove. Palate coating and it just melts on your tongue like nothing you ever drink. Incredibly long finish. You don't want to swallow it it's so good. Hard for me not to say that the last wine of 2017 was the best of the year.

WOW! At just 10 years of age, it's impossible not to be blown away by this wine. Rich, concentrated, unctuous and packed with multiple layers of sweet, ripe and and very ripe golden fruits, honey, flowers and vanilla. What makes it all work is the blazing acidity that keeps it all so fresh and vibrant. You can wait decades for full maturity, and it will be worth the wait. Or, you can just pop a cork and enjoy the thrill ride as young Sauternes are not much better than this.

Served with lunch at Cheval Blanc to accompany pineapple carpaccio and marscapone sorbet. Having tasted the 2016 before lunch (which was incredible and rated 100 by a number in my group) I was not sure what to expect. I was not disappointed. The clarity of aromas and flavours, the balance of sweetness and acidity and the utter tirelessness of this wine just makes you want to keep drinking it and drinking it. The finish is super-long, lingering for minutes. I lack the experience and perspective to know whether this is truly a 100 point wine but there is nothing that came to mind that I could think of that was lacking or that would improve it and on that basis I give it full marks.

Tasted blind. Obviously Sauternes with all the coconut, almond macaroon, tropical, even lobster scents. On the palate this was blocky, obvious, and all sharp elbows competing for attention and leaving me kind of unsatisfied shifting between bitter/spicy/sweet. I'm generally in the camp of enjoying Sauternes at all ages but maybe this is one that needs cellar time to meld these disparate pieces. Hard to rate.
{375ml} Served double-blind, with two other stickies, this was clearly the superior wine. It was the most complete, the most complex and the most balanced. It had depth, character and layers of lovely, fresh fruits. But, I didn't like it near as much as some, and ultimately decided that, to me, it was worth maybe $60-$75 in a 375ml format (i.e. a lot of money for a 375ml). Upon the reveal, I stood by my belief - this wine is just over-hyped and over-priced, with the exception of just a (tiny) handful of vintages. That said, I really did enjoy the mixture of fruits, minerals and the bright engaging nature of it all; it was very good but fell short of excellent or epic. I have probably had d'Yquem from 30 different vintages, all from high-quality cellars, though I can only remember being wowed twice. Which really just means I look forward to the third time. Thru 2040.
Served double-blind; a few fingers worth was still in the bottle and I have little doubt that it would have improved if sampled on days 2, 3, or 4.

working with wine 2016 seminar 2 - sweet wines (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Biscuit, toast, vanilla, cream, butter, wet stone, apricot jam, honey with agitation more apricot but also orange and sweet spice….oh lord, on the plate this is very, very good indeed. Difficult to spit everything (and there is plenty of it) on the nose is on the palate. The balance of acidity and sugar is near perfect. Almost savoury toffee here as well on the back palate. Ridiculously long. Sublime but still only just beginning to show development. Lordy!

I've often heard that you really cannot drink enough Yquem, can you? While I really believe that's true, I'm looking forward to the day we find out for sure. Sip after sip of laser focused, perfectly ripe, tropical fruit, citrus, apricots, vanilla, white peach and nectarine all slathered in honey with incredible levels of freshness made each sniff, swirl and swallow a treat. This is quite primary, but the fruit and textures are so gorgeous, it's difficult not to love the wine in your glass.
Another great d'Yquem. Peach, orange peel, caramel. What makes it so great is that it's never flabby or fat because of the perfect balance between the acid and the sweetness and the unbelievable consitency in quality they achieve.
Drank with a table of D'Yquem newbies who were originally quite skeptical on price and afterwards all believers. How they can pack the flavor they do into these wines while still seeming incredibly light on their feet and just elegant is beyond me. And the finish which lasts forever. Just fabulous!
Mini vertical of 2011, 2009, 2007, 2005. Wow, what a nose - expressive, spicy with incredible depth. Caramel, honey, tropical fruit, cream, orange zest, orange liqueur. As rich and big as the 2009, spicy, fresh and balanced, but with an extra dimension and more energy and a lighter touch somehow. We are obviously splitting hairs here. A real stunner. Very very persistent and lingering.
Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, Sauternes (Groot Constantia): Medium to deep gold colour, indicating some maturity. The nose is intense and offers a plethora of fruit with heady, captivating aromas of candied lemon, dried mango, lime marmalade and lightly torched creme brulee. The palate entry shows incredible complexity, with fine acidity and depth of fruit. Layers of different elements contribute to its extraordinary complexity. Citrus peel, apricot, pineapple, mango, and pears alongside a mineral edge. This combines to give a light and lifted approach that accommodates the 120 g/l of residual sugar, which adds smoothness to the overall experience. This wine is indeed on the money with an endless farewell, leaving a lasting impression.

Color amarillo dorado bien brillante e intenso, limpio y gruesa lágrima bien lenta.

Very sweet, powerful and concentrated, with fresh, lively, honey drenched tropical fruits, vanilla and floral notes. The wine has depth, complexity and length. Now, all it needs is a decade or two of bottle age.
from 375ml Day 1 - Tasted 2 hours after opening. Light straw gold color, initial familiar sauternes sweetness aroma followed quickly by a light pleasant floral scent, and then revert back to pineapple & citrus smell. Upon tasting, taste followed the exact pattern, with additional hint of smokeiness / burnt at the finish. So smooth with great balance of acidity. Obviously quite young, but very enjoyable right now. Day 2 - (left 1 oz overnight in bottle in fridy - just pop the cork back in) Color is the same, aroma & taste was dominated by sweetness of pineapple / apricot, and the floral note is ever so faintly present. Day 1 was much more yummy.

Berry Bros & Rudd - Bordeaux en primeur 2012 tasting (the Lindley Hall, Royal Horticultural Society, London): cloying, coopers orange marmalade and an almost medicinal note. In the mouth there is more of the same with lime cordial. Very concentrated flavours (perhaps too concentrated) and a thick viscosity and weight that I find a little off-putting - entering that cough medicine level of sweetness, almost artificial. I'm assuming it just needs a lot of time. Not for me on this tasting.

Bright gold. On the nose, lots of tropical fruit notes, such as guava, passion fruit, mango, then acacia honey, dried fruit, such as dried apricot, quince paste, vanilla, touch of butter. Oily, unctuous texture and super long finish. I find it too rich for my palate (and my pocket). Personally, I prefer Climens for its freshness and Suduiraut for its complexity.

I wish I could afford this elixir. It has all the right stuff with its racy personality and decadent layers of juicy, ripe, honey coated tropical fruits, spices, vanilla, nuts and coconut. The wine is perfectly balanced between sweetness and acidity, with freshness and a beautiful purity of fruit. It sort of reminds me of the 1989 d’Yquem in its youth, except that was only $75 a half bottle.

Some wines, due to the fame of the marquee, light up the faces of eager tasters when they are opened. The list of wines deserving of those accolades is short and sweet. Speaking of sweet, at the top of the pyramid of the world's sweet is Chateau d'Yquem. With its track record of successful vintages, that's where it belongs. 2007 d'Yquem is another great success for the chateau! With a deep gold color, the nose explodes with honey, flowers, white peaches, nectarines, orange rind, vanilla custard, nuts and overripe pineapple. There is an intensity of flavor, multiple layers of sweet, ripe, honey drenched fruit and the perfect amount of acidity to give the wine ample lift keeping it fresh.

An absolutely brilliant Yquem, one of the best of the decade. The fruity nose only hints at the intense palate flavors to come. A very lush, generous offering of fresh fruit on the palate, primarily very-ripe apricot and orange peel. Beautifully balanced with a complex structure that fascinates. Not at all cloying or overly sweet. Very smooth finish that lasts at least a minute, nothing harsh or out of balance to mar the experience. Just a touch below the virtual perfection of the 2001, which is deserving of every 100-point rating it gets. Very well done, indeed.

CellarTracker Bordeaux Trip; 5/23/2011-5/26/2011 (Bordeaux, France): Fantastic, captivating nose that would bring a smile to any wine lovers face. Gorgeous layered aromas of sweet creamy honey, soft chewy caramel, apricot, apple sauce, honeysuckle, and some lovely floral components. Fortunately, the palate does not disappoint. Dense and oily in texture, while exhibiting great structure, showing a strong element of apricot, followed by honey, ripe pear, candied peach, apple sauce, and a touch of spice that just coats the tongue. Great acidity brings everything into a perfect balance to compliment the full bodied nature of this wine. Long finish, leaving a note of fresh honey behind on the palate. Outstanding.

-- tasted a single glass non-blind over 10 – 15 minutes --
NOSE: wonderfully complex; golden raisins; hint of oak; beautiful botrytis spice; not the most hedonistic Sauternes I’ve ever smelled, but not a weakling by any stretch of the imagination.
BODY: golden yellow color of medium depth; full bodied.
TASTE: I was immediately taken by how graceful this was – I was expecting a more concentrated and hedonistic wine than this, but I slowly came around to the underlying complexity this wine has in spades; wonderful acidity; light honey; persimmon; oak on the long finish; great length; gorgeous wine; not quite as “big” as I usually prefer my Sauternes, but this wine just reeked of grace and class. Horrible QPR, great wine.

CT Bordeaux Trip, Day 2 (Graves & Sauternes): What a wine! Beautiful nose, still tight, but rather lighter and fresher than I normally associate with d'Yquem, less coconut than usual too. There was a bit of it still in there somewhere, but it was the spectrum of caramel scents, butterscotch, honey, accompanied by figs and poached pear notes that stood out more. There was even a touch of flowery perfume, and a bit of high-toned passionfruit at the edges. A really nice, complex bouquet, with a dancing fresh lightness to its scents. The palate totally perished any thought of lightness though - there was just tons of rich weight and depth in a creamily textured mouthful. From attack to finish, the wine showed a whole panoply of of tropical fruit flavours - mangoes, passionfruit, even some jackfruit, along with a shade of dried apricots. Great complexity, but also with a tremendously impressive amount of integration for such a young wine. There seemed to be a slight pause at the back-palate, and then the finish sets in with a lovely sense of freshness that lifted the wine into a really superbly long back-end peppered with sweet clove, nutmeg and cinamon spice and, finally, just a little hint of coconut juice at the very tail. This is still a baby of course, but it was extremely precocious and choked-full of quality. A brilliant d'Yquem. This is one to lay down and keep for the ages.

Awesome wine with a very long finish.. i had no clue what the tour guide was talking about with respect to what type of french tree was used for the oak barrels, but i definitely recommend if you've never tried a Sauternes. Drink now or wait 10 years.

Indulgence and elegance. This is just entering its rather long drinking window and has a good few decades ahead of it.
Full of stone fruit - nectarine and apricot with the emergence of some cumquat marmalade. Beautiful syrupy texture being graced by nice acidity.

Very intense copper-yellow colour.

Didn’t have the energy, verve, complexity, or length of the 03. Delicious but didn’t hit the dizzy heights that Yquem often does. So, hold!

Utter Syrup ! Wow was this thick and viscous, aromas and flavors of butterscotch, maple syrup, might as well throw in the ripened raisin pancakes.

working with wine 2016 seminar 2 - sweet wines (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Biscuit, toast, vanilla, cream, butter, wet stone, apricot jam, honey with agitation more apricot but also orange and sweet spice….oh lord, on the plate this is very, very good indeed.

Day 1 - Tasted 2 hours after opening.

Clear, brass gold, white rim, thousands of lonely thick tears
Clean, full intensity, powerful flora aromas of jasmine, saffron, honey, ripe apricots, and guava
Sweet, full body - so smooth! Med-acidity, low tannins, med+ alcohol. Beautiful thick nectar of orange-coloured fruits, turkish delight, candied apples with an amazing finish of flowers in your mouth.

ANV 13'. Light honeyed yellow. The nose is a melange of deliciousness. Honey, straw, light caramel, and flowers. The palate is rich and powerful but with great acidity. Will undoubtedly age forever.

Château d'Yquem tasting (Stockholm): Appearance: golden yellow
Nose: botrytis, zest, honey, flowery and powerful. Grand and elegant, but young.
Palate: very sweet, viscous, dried apricots, honey, citrus, menthol notes, high acidity, very long and fresh aftertaste.
Summary: extremely elegant. Young but approachable, 98+ p
Compared to the 2007 de Fargues, this shows more citrus and elegance, and less spice. Its style is more fresh.

Light straw in color. Immediate rush of pineapples on the nose. Strong, sweet and citrusy. Actually one of my favorite young sauternes. while a mediocre Red Bord year, a fantastic sauternes year, and this is a great example of it. Nothing harsh, honey finish. This will be a good one for the ages.
