Honeysuckle, green apple, slight petroleum, waxy, medium plus acidity, medium plus finish, dry, mineral at first, slightly fruity after 1hour+, nice wine.

Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): This was honeycomb and some sort of spice note that I couldn’t quite place but which made the wine quite interesting. There’s a darker note to this and more of a mouthful at this point. Rich and sweet. Nice wine.

Touche de pétrole mais très noble, la texture riche sans excès me charme pas mal, acidité un peu en retrait mais il y en a encore, belle longueur, très bon mais trop cher au prix d’aujourd’hui.
Touch of petroleum but more on the noble and classy side, texture is great and charming, rich yet some acidity still, very good but way too expensive today.

Quelle longueur! Beau vin assurément, grand riesling, genre gardien du temple…

Beautiful acidity and piercing minerality combined with apricot, mandarin, peach and a hint of petrol. After a few hours gained a lot more weight which seemed to overpower the acidity and minerality. The balance improves on day 2. So this might still need some time.

Lovely golden color. Beautiful aromatics, particularly the yellow braised apple. Has developed nicely. Expect it will stay on the plateau for a while, but drinking great now. Paired with white fish, white wine cream sauce and julienne veg.

Right from the start, complex nose of lemon curd, hawthorn, minerals. Excellent freshness, medium bodied, not heavy, stays precise. I really like this showing which is more precise, almost like a German Riesling, than the often a but plumb Alsace Rieslings. Great wine. 95-96

Quince and lemon fruit. No petrol / lanolin notes yet. Lots of refreshing acidity and tension. Drinking very well now but would imagine this will gain complexity with additional bottle age.

Shimmering gold in colour - very attractive. Such a rich, honeyed nose, with a touch of botrytis and intermingling high-toned aromas.
As others have noted, the experience on the palate is startling, as this is bone dry. I slightly preferred the nose, but the experience in the mouth is also excellent: incredibly long and gourmand, sweet decayed apple, some bitterness, and a distinct chewiness - wonderful structure.
Although this is superb wine and I am delighted to have tasted it, I don't think the QPR vs German Riesling stands up unfortunately.

Q2 2019 Tasting - Alsatian White Varietals (The Apt): Wine #11: All of the wines I think would have benefited from some food, but for some reason this one more than the others seemed to be crying out a bit for it. Can tell there's a touch of age here. Some toasted caramel. Lower acidity and yet smooth and easy to drink. Just somehow seemed to want a partner in crime. (2 pennies)

Dinner with Friends (Osteria Langhe): 96/06 flight. Full nose with fresh aromatics of orchard fruit, florals and mineral. The palate is so bright with crystalline purity and taut acids. Precise and long. Slightly preferred this to the more mature '96.

Stunning nose like a bag of overripe apricots and flowers. You'd assume it's a totally sweet wine based on the nose, but of course it's dry as a bone. The greatest dry Riesling I've ever had. Complexity off the charts. Dried apricots, tea, petrol, key lime pie with meringue. Thick, oily texture. Super dry finish like lemon rind. Everything you want out of a dry Riesling.

I am generally fairly mean on scoring wine, particularly white wine, but this is the third bottle I have had of this vintage from this producer and I have found it to be an extraordinary experience on each occasion. Fragrant nose of slightly underripe apricot, underripe mango, quince and wet limestone. So many aspects to this in the mouth: off-dry, fresh lime, chalk, hint of marmalade, lemon, peach. Despite the complexity and thickness it is incredibly easy to drink, laid back and understated. I think this will go for 20 years still. A stunning wine.

The most fruit and petrol on the nose in the flight of 06-09. At the same time softer and more integrated. Some development beginning in the wine and by far the most developed in the flight. Just beginning to show its stuff. Good acid, peaches, lemons and a touch of honey.

This wine was really big!! The color is golden yellow. The nose is dense and rich. The concentration of fruit and minerality is huge. A Power nose of cured lemon, cooked apricot, sage, chalk, and hints of pineapple, and salt. The mouth feel is dense and fat. Heavy concentration of fruit but still vibrant acidity. To me very balanced. Notwithstanding it's age and the cooked fruit, its still really dry. Early on the palate seems the fruit almost overwhelms but then it dries up on the tongue and has a bit of a salty long finish. Very interesting. I am glad I have a couple more to see how they develop with more time.

Clos Ste Hune vertical 83-09 with Anne Trimbach. Historic vineyard of only 1,67 ha in the village of Hunawihr in central Alsace. Limestone soil, cool southeast position with morning sun.
"TROPICAL" vintage, warm and rainy, small production. Harvest in October.
This wine is a beast! I'm sure theres more to come from this wine in the decades to come, but this wine knocked me again completely. The color is golden yellow at this point, and the aromas coming out of the glass are dense and rich. Theres a massive wall of minerals and grape charachter just rising from the glas, the concentration of minerality is second to none. A dense nose of cured lemon, lemon cest, pine, sage, chalk, and pinapple, and almost like an oystershell air. In the mouth it just puts every other riesling in a lower league. The pure fruit concentration and the vibrant acidity creating the balance is what makes this stand out for me. The aromas are nice & fatty, almost oily lemon cesty in its profile, but the acidity cutting through makes it come together as a knockout. Its really really dry, I was expecting a slightly sweeter fruit from the nose, but no no, make no mistake, this is on the 'salty' side of riesling fruit. A real treat. I have a hard time remembering anything coming close to this. Something from Berncastel from Thanish probably, but then we are in the green apple profile, this is a lemon dream. Resisting to put 96 only because I think it is actually quite demanding to drink more than 2 glasses:)

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2006 (Villa Behr (Wendlingen, Germany)): Decanted for about 3 hours. Clear, golden yellow color. I will not rate this wine. It was not faulty according to my fellow tasters and it has all a great Riesling needs, but it has also some aromas in the nose (acetone) and on the palate that I really don’t like. I'm glad I didn't know anything about Alsacian vintages when I bought this from Crush. Apparently 2006 was a washout due to heavy rain in September. An Extraordinary Range at Maison Trimbach (Ribeauvillé, France): Pale, floral, lemony, dry and high acidity. Light weight but great intensity and penetration. This is more like it! The Clos Ste. Hune manages to be classic and potentially great whereas the Frederic Emile succumbs to the excesses of the vintage. The wine showed tremendous resemblance to the '96 we had yesterday. Amazing result for the vintage.
