2007 Antica Terra Pinot Noir

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (61) Avg Score: 91.2 points

  • Tasting the Americans (Chez Nous): Ruby, cloudy and light opacity with a touch garnet around the edges. On the nose is sour and red cherries with ash tray and cola notes. On the palate there is good acidity and the fruit darkens along the profile. This is American in style but if there is anything Burgundian in style it is not the nose but maybe the fruit concentration found in premier and grand crus. Well balanced and long finishing. Delicious.

  • Just as lovely and adorable tonight as compared to earlier tastings. The 2007 Antica Terra is showing its very best sides tonight with vivid sun warm orange zest, red currant, subtle saddle leather and a perfect tone of rainy deciduous forest. The nose is actually rather stunning and close to profound. The palate has integration as its No.1 keyword and adds very nicely to the overall experience. The balance is striking and the length on the finish lasts a minute or more. Certainly hittings its prime drinking window right now, I am not certain if this effort will last for another 5 or 10 years - but it certainly is a treat tonight. (score is 94+)

  • Delicious. Wild cherry, earth, medium+ length finish. Keeps getting better each time I open a bottle, but only one left!

  • Complex and compelling nose. Dark cherries, spice and undergrowth. Palate a little jammy and warm, but still decent drinking. I don't suspect this will get any better from here. (91 Very good wine)

  • End of Project Supper 5 (Le Trader, Harris Street, Pyrmont): Stalky, red cherry, cream and vanilla. Quite fleshy on the palate, a little fresh but underpinned by a stalky sourness. Not as good as I remember it.

  • Coravin fun - semi global pinot (Kennards, Waterloo): From Coravin. Slight burnt stalk note over cherry, sweet spice and leather. More generous on the palate with cherry, slight burnt coffee and some stalks. Tannins are just about present but pretty much resolved. Nice but probably drink up for me.

  • Kleur: Fluwelig roze rood. Aroma / bouquet: Fruitella fruit. Bosaardbeitjes, frambozen. Geconfijte kers en speculaas. Sigaren kistjes hout. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 9 + Smaak / Afdronk: 13 + Algemeen / potentieel: 7 = 84/100

  • WB & KM come visiting (My place, parramatta, sydney): Cherry spice and slight leather as well as a kind of herbaceous/stalky note and touches of sour cream. Also coffee and chocolate on the nose. In the mouth the wine is quite savoury with leathery tannins and muted cherry but all quite juicy and rather pleasant.

  • From Coravin. Aromas of cherry and berry, spice, slightly stalky notes as well as some meatiness. Actually there is also a little sourness here as well as some wet, chalky stone notes. In the mouth the are initial flavours of ripe cherry and raspberry, sweet and savoury spice, slight leather, flour textured tannins that dry the mid palate. The wine finishes with spice notes dominating the fruit. It is now beginning to show some tertiary characteristics. Still rather nice but in a very different place to where it was last time I tried it if memory serves correct.

  • (BrunnerGang@Mich'sMysteryMarvel) [parallel with 2009 Erath Pinot Noir Clone 115 Prince Hill] Dark ruby in glass, and similarly rich on the nose: fresh lychee, canned lychee syrup, dusty roses, rosewater, edging on synthetic perfume, hints of black pepper, and surprising tropical fruit. Taste is similarly generous with a bouquet of roses, fresh dewy leaves, rich and rather concentrated. Beautiful starting palate which falls abruptly short, revealing dark earth, graphite and grapefruit bitters. Starting to drink, perhaps 5 more years to really integrate? Easy and focused, with great Oregon expression, but could do better with just a bit more time (93+1).

  • Very little sediment. Translucent ruby with layered bleeding. Firm bouquet with strawberry liqueur, rainy weather and must. Massive pure sweet fruit on the palate. Great shape. Big tasty young pinot with plenty of potential. I would check back with this one in a few years, but it is a ways off from being fully mature. NR

  • Absolutely adorable and showing its very best sides tonight, the 2007 Antica Terra expresses vivid and lovely orange zest, red currant, subtle saddle leather and a perfect tone of rainy deciduous forest. It is a somewhat stunning nose. The palate is close to perfectly integrated adds very nicely to the overall experience. The balance is striking and the length on the finish lasts some 50 seconds. A lovely effort for sure, maybe lacking the complexity found in e.g. the Botanica cuvée it is still a treat and proof that Antica Terra wines need time to come around!

  • Starting to mature but absolutely no sense of tunneling, the 2007 Antica Terra reveals lovely forest floor, minerals and a deep Pinot fruit. The palate is exquisitely balanced and adds to the overall experiene. I am quite impressed by how the fruit is so integrated and does not "take over" - despite the complete destemming. A true pleasure to drink, but I wonder when the tunneling will emerge? If it ever will?

  • No formal notes, but enjoyed this over the course of a few hours over dinner with friends. This was drinking more like many 2007s were drinking on release, showing a pretty strong green briar streak throughout. In addition to the briar, the nose offered some green bell peppers and light bits of soil. Pretty light overall. Palate texture was on the thinner side, without the weight that many 2007s have begun to put on. Not very much depth of flavor on the palate, but also not out of balance. It just feels like it's quite closed down and tight at present. Similar on the finish, with nice acidity and that green streak, but not too much length or depth. Perhaps a shut down bottle. Feels like it needs another 5 years, but I'm also not sure how compelling it will become from here.

  • Lovely earthy nose with nice floral notes and bright red fruits. The palate has a velvety mouthfeel with lush darker raspberry and cherry fruit, minerals, well integrated tannins, spices and a long finish. A very well balanced wine. 91+ to 92 pts.

  • Post Wine-Ark Supper with the boys - May (Restaurant Atelier, Glebe Point Road, Sydney): rich, red fruit, tending to cherry, slight warm, 'that' pinot noir smell, medium plus acid, mouth filling, long, slight smoky note. Glorious

  • Portland CellarTracker offline (Sauvage et Fausse Piste Winery, Portland, Oregon): Pleasant brett and funk scents in line with exotic and simple baking spices and fresh cherry. Wild mushrooms, bright cherry, earth and brine on the silky refined palate. Interesting as well as boasts longevity for the acidic notes. Would love to revisit in a few years.

  • Light ruby with garnet rim, lilac, mineral, forest floor nose. Dry, tart berry, lighter fruit, medium body, some earthy mineral elements with a hint of leafy bitter. Nicely aged, restrained and at a good place now. Day two, I was a little underwhelmed on day one, it went well with the turkey dinner, on it's own was OK, but not great. Given a day, Oh Boy, much improved, very good. Dry, round body, super good mouthfeel, fruit, acid and tannin balance. Went up about 3 pts. Luscious fruit, ripe cherries, plums, dates and has the tart, bright berry flavors I find appealing, a bit of earth and stemmy tannins on the finish for balance. A vary complex and lovely wine. Drink with food, turkey day leftovers in this case. Just getting better all the time, I'm really looking forward to the remaining 5 bottles and may need to get a few of the newer vintages as well. It now has a similarity to a '94 Bethel Heights PN I drank a while back that was remarkable and renewed my appreciation for PN.

  • Well, about 16 months has gone by since I last sat down with one of these. Profoundly elegant nose of strawberry and raspberry underpinned by earth, leather and autumn leaf. In the mouth the fruit is to the fore but this rolls back to reveal leather, sweet spices, earthiness and slight tannic grip. On the long finish the warm alcohol, that is not intrusive, comes forward a little but the fruit carries through. I need to get my hands on some more of this.

  • Underwhelmed a bit. Nose a putrid mix of dill pickle meeting prune at first; happily blows off some over time. Saved by silky mouthfeel and vibrant fruit as the bottle opens up. Hard to call the future on this.....

  • Very nice wine that has a good blend of cherry and strawberry fruit notes. As with many Willamette Valley Pinot's, there are strong earth notes with a hint of leather. Overall, very nice, complex wine that is likely to get better over the next few years.

  • A brilliant wine, the 2007 Antica Terra Pinot Noir just keeps improving with time. The nose is amazing expressing so much red fruits, cherries and red currant I am amazed. The palate is medium-bodied, yet it has a perfect finish with a superb length. There is a tremendous balance between oak, fruit, acidity and the super silky tannins. Tonight the Antica Terra impressed me even more than usual. Thank you Maggie!

  • Elegance & Power. This medium bodied wine packs a full bodied punch, but I am getting ahead of myself. If there was such a thing as a green, leafy shrub that bore both blackberries and raspberries, and you were to be stuck in that shrub/ hedge on a rainy, warm afternoon inhaling the fragrant leaves, wet branches, and perfectly ripe fruit, then you'd know what this wine smells like. The nose contains the brightness of wet greenery, a woody pithiness of young branches, and intoxicatingly ripe fruit.
On the palate, acid and fruit hit first, the mid palate carries the bite of white pepper along with a floral component, and the medium length finish has the wet greenery and the fading memory of fruit. The surprising thing is just how strong the flavors are. Almost reminiscent of the grip of a Syrah, but lighter in body. Truly a captivating Pinot that straddles power and elegance, while preserving the mystery.
Day 3- the oak shows a bit more, the fruit darkens, the intensity remains. 93+

  • Tonight the 2007 Antica Terra is showing its best side. The nose is simply adorable with elegant super pure fruit expressing red currant, subtle strawberries and a lot of rainy deciduous forest. Actually, this effort provides one of the best pinot noses I have ever experienced. The palate is just as elegant and combines fruit, oak and acidity in a superb way. The acidity is well-balanced and the whole effort sings a beautiful song of integration. The overall impression is very positive and I am struck by the purity and elegance expressed in both nose and palate. Still no tunneling, maybe this wine will manage without?

  • Saturday Night Wine Tasting (Throyd's - Lansdowne): slightly corked --- a real disappointment, as you could tell that there was something special trying to get out -- it was barely noticeable at first, but get progressively worse. spiced strawberry, earth, and sweet spice. finish shows nice acidity, but is undercut by the TCA.

  • This wine was rocking - everyone was in love. Wish i had a mag for this occasion.
Gorgeous cloudy purple/ruby/pinkish color in the glass. Deep and rich mostly purple, but there was an intensity to the brightness of the color that was intriguing to me. Really unique.
Aromatics were enormous and extremely elegant. Feminine and supple but powerful. Old World funk, shrooms, strawberries meets light raspberries meets maraschino cherry - but super fresh.
The flavors were in complete harmony. Soft lush strawberries and cream, cotton candy, bubble gum. Some really nice fresh rose petals coupled with a touch of sea breeze and saline. Really clean and pure bouquet showing - wonderful.
Everyone agreed this was the wine of the evening. Showing so well now, but the acidity tells a tale it will be around for a decade or so.

  • Delicious. A marvellous effort displaying an array of all the components you want to find in a good pinot. The 2007 Antica Terra certainly delivers and since I last tasted this wine it has evolved and is now showing some maturity. Tones of red fruit is combined with wet saddle leather and a pleasant acidity. I sense no tunneling. Highly recommended.

  • Rose hips and other mainly red forest fruits in the bouquet as well as the taste. Earthy flavors.Very intense and a firm amount of alcohol and a very long finish. Has the characteristics of a tempting and full bodied German Spätburgunder, but lacks a little in complexity to be really great.

  • Dreamtasting #1 (Restaurant Le Défi, Sprang-Capelle): Pinot colour, Grenache-like bouquet of crisp fresh cherry fruit, wild strawberries. Fresh and kinda sweetish. Nice wine, but not very profound at the moment. Some would say monolithic. Has a hard time in this line-up and is probably too young. 17/20

  • Lovely. If you have ever walked through a misty deciduous forest in the early morning hours, watching the first streaks of sun shine through the leaves then you know exactly what the 2007 Antica Terra Pinot Noir is like. If you have not, then you had better buy a bottle and find out. This is a very nice effort from Maggie Harrison, a nice wine, expressing tons of fresh strawberries, red currants and raspberries. Tones of misty morning forest and used old saddle leather is also telling the taster a polite but yet firm "hello". The finish lasts about 40 seconds and the different components of the wine are nicely integrated. In my opinion this wine is still too young to drink. In about 12-18 months from now it will flourish even more. The ends are still a bit tight but will come around nicely with time. Now the trick is to find the perfect drinking window. I will try another bottle late December to see what has happened.

  • This wine always has seemed to me like its about to pop but it doesnt. The nose has some nice cherry and spice, and the palate does as well but there is an explosion missing for me. A little vanilla on the palate the is distracting as well. Feels soft rather than tight. I dont know if this will eved do it for me. Got one left we will see.

  • After hearing "Maggie, Maggie, Maggie" on various boards, I thought I just had to try this wine. Young Pinot color, medium intensity ruby to slightly purple; brilliant. Restrained, pure, airy, very young Pinot aromas with strawberry & cherry fruit, hint of butter & yeast, touch of oak, and an annoying burning sensation in the nose (alcohol? or, more likely, sulfur). Light bodied, candied carbonic strawberry-cherry flavor, with a pinch of spice, and a dollop of saltiness. Elevated acid that is slightly unbalanced at the moment, and moderate tannins. Short, somewhat tongue burning finish, that ends with more than a hint of bitterness. If not for the various sensations that indicate to me there's a little extra sulfur in the wine, I would rate this a 90. My guess is that this wine will show a lot better in 5 to 7 years, after the flavors mature, the acid calms down some, the bitterness drops out, and the sulfur gets bound up. A good '07 effort, but not distinct from other good, but not great, Oregon '07s. It seems that at least 3 points of most scores on this site are related more to winemaker worship than to the intrinsic characteristics of the wine itself.

  • Wow, fantastic stuff. Nose of pinot funk(the good kind), cherry, and damp forest floor with a little violet. Palate had an incredibly intense attack, but followed with a concentrated fruit core of cherry and plum. Carried through on the lengthy finish of damp earth, spice, and lavender. Really fantastic stuff.

  • Occasional tasting group: "Terroir or bottles with a story" (@ TBa): Rose hips in the bouquet. Same on the palate as well as red fruits. Firm amount of sweetness, nicely balanced with enough acidity. Long finish. Very smooth wine. I miss real complexity for a higher score, but possibly the wine is still too young.

  • Light ruby colour, medium strong pinot smell with hints of cherries. A rather light pinot but could be that the previous tasted cabs and syrah had an effect on the taste. Nice and well integrated although to weak for my taste.

  • Medium to light ruby in color. Cinnamon, allspice, clove and cherry on the nose. Flavors of bright cherry, raspberry and herbs. Medium bodied, elegant with a silky texture. Ripe berry with spiciness and breadth with a lengthy finish.

  • Another bottle sourced for the holidays and popped way too early...well, maybe not as both of these bottles showed surprisingly well within 3 days of each other. This bottle however was popped and poured, and showed so much better than the bottle decanted on Christmas Eve. Very strange, but maybe this is better popped and poured right now, but it has me a bit confused! Regardless, this is only going to get better with some age. No crazy barnyard funk on the nose like the bottle on Christmas Eve. Nice fruit forward nose of strawbery, cherry, and blueberry, with very little hint of alcohol on the nose. On the palate, more cherry and strawberry, with more hints of spice. This seemed much more fruit foward than the last bottle, and again pretty uncharacteristic of Oregon to me compared to other Oregon pinot noir. Regardless, not a bad thing. Very pleasant finish made this bottle go down nicely, and another true pleasure. Kudos to Maggie Harrison for yet another great wine!

  • Had to source for the holidays as I vowed not to check any luggage, so swung by Craig’s shop, Premier Cru Wine Merchants in Arlington Heights, and picked up the whole Maggie Harrison lineup. If there is one time that I think drinking something early is ok, it is when I have to source when travelling. Nothing wrong with taking one for the team here when I have to source from somewhere. That said, I popped and decanted one of these on Christmas Eve for about 2 hours at cellar temp in my parents cellar. This is the first ’07 A.T. I’ve popped, and the nose had me a bit scared. Initial nose was a bit frightening with all the funk. Tons of barnyard on the nose, with faint hints of strawberry and baking spice. Thankfully, the palate showed very well for something so darn young, and this was by far the most approachable ’07 Oregon pinot I had tried, though I will admit we haven’t popped many ‘07’s at all. The palate showed some nice dark black fruits: blackberry, boysenberry, and a hint of blueberry, with some strawberry and cherry. Obviously being so young, there is still some acidity, but the tannins seemed very mellow, and I found this wine to be very approachable. Some have mentioned that they find the ’07 to be a bit candied, but I don’t taste or smell any candied fruit in the least. I will however say that this does seem to show more fruit than most Oregon pinot noir. Not sure if it is just the wine, or if it is the vintage. Touch call. Regardless, my stepfather and I put this bottle down pretty quick, and I look forward to having another on one Sunday! Cheers!

  • Very subtle nose upon opening, reminded me of a Burgundy at first, barnyard, grassy. A little minty, too (spearmint).
Palate was light fruit, strawberry, watermelon, slight cinnamon stick and an obvious black pepper in the finish (which actually became more subtle as it opened). Also, acid was a bit high, mid-palate, at the start. Finish was average length.
So to sum up, it was light & quite pleasant at beginning, but opened up very, very beautifully and rather quickly (by 2nd glass, maybe 1 - 1.5 hours in decantur). Although it probably would age well, I don't necessarily think this one needs it. Right now it is very enjoyable with a bit of air. Nice wine.

  • Medium ruby color leads to a nose of violet, asian spice and red cherry. The palate has flavors of cinnamon, cherry, & cardamon in this medium body wine. Finish has excellent acidity. This paired exceptionally well with grilled pork chops and baked sweet potatos. Great example of Oregon Pinot!

  • Antica Terra & Evesham Wood Served Together - BLIND: Aromatically the wines were similar with the Antica showing more fruit. Also has a stemy/green quality that is very appealing. Smells terrific but I could see the green elements putting some people off. Darker and showing more oak than the EW. Very pretty and pure on the palate although slightly bitter on the finish. Tannins are fitting in nicely. Showed a little less candied than the EW. Time is needed to sort the jumbled finish.

  • Wow! This is a big big wine. The fruit profile of this was red heading towards blue, think bing cherries as opposed to rainier. I was very puzzled by this at first, big big big is all I could think of. However, it's not big in an overdone candied fruit sort of way, it's just got a lot of everything: huge aromatics, blast of fruit tempered with ample acidity... After a couple of hours it settled down a bit and knit into a seriously complex wine with plenty of structure and a very nice finish. The lesson here for me: hold for AT LEAST 4-5 years.

NOTE: I've had the '08 Antica Terra Rosé a couple of times and you could really see the lineage which was fun.

  • This is an excellent wine with lots of potential for the years to come, though it drinks nicely right now as well. Very well balanced with smooth tannins and the "right amount" of oak. Creamy texture, but not too soft or fluffy. Tones of leather, dark chocolate and red cherry. A scent of lavender was also very evident. The latter may be a result of the filet of veal and a delicate sauce containing fragments of orange-peel which was served with the wine.

  • Popped and poured with about a 1/2 hour decant in the glass. Nose: predominately citrusy, blood orange peel, with a little animale and a little oak. As it opens and develops some slate/mineral undertones emerge. Initial taste is sweet with a definite hint of butterscotch which contrasts nicely with the nose. Good acid. The tanins slide in long enough to sharpen and frame the sweetness of the fruit. Nice clean finish. This is a light, and elegant pinot ( which is very much typical of this vintage), and this bottle is just a baby. As the wine continues to evolve throughout the evening, it definitely develops new aromas (definite cinnamon with some floral notes, maybe rose petals), and new flavors. It clearly has lots of room to grow.

  • Aromatically superior to the 06. As you would expect, it seems it has taken a step forward as Maggie gets more familiar with her fruit and the vineyard. Just my assumption. Mouthfeel is silky after 3 hour decant with minimal rough edges that I thoroughly enjoyed. Forest floor, round, spicy cherry/strawberry that is light on it's feet. You can expect these subtleties to evolve into an even more intriguing wine. Solid now. Better in 2-3 . Recommend a 2 hour decant now. Nice job Antica.
