Hmmm…not sure what to make of this. Massive, massive wine. Decanted for 30 minutes. A bit stewed & disjointed with heat. Big fruit on the nose & palate despite 16 years of age. Wish there was more balance. Could not follow for more than 30 minutes so hope it improved.

Decanted. Dark red with small amount sediment. Fresh cherries, Sous bois nose. Palate has well concentrated dark, nuanced and slightly confected fruit, ample tannin; a little drying on the finish. Somebody squeezed these grapes hard. Very enjoyable but best with dinner, due to the tannin.

Enjoyable again but much more primary. Loads of red and black fruit along with balanced but substantial acidity. Some spices and oak but not much for tertiary flavors yet.

Very Good. We were concerned that this might have passed its prime. We decanted for about 30 minutes prior to drinking. Beautiful ruby color. It retains a wonderful acidity despite the depth of the red and black fruits. It paired fairly well with braised lamb and potatoes, but it probably would have paired better with, guess what, northern Italian.

Did a pop’n’pour from my cellar as a dinner of leftover tenderloin from Xmas was being served so no chance to decant and I think this wine needs a couple of hours to soften up. Also the slightest bit of cork taint was detected. Not enough to ruin the bottle but it lingered on the finish.

The 2007 Oreno has still some years ahead. Good to drink, but would benefit from some more years. Dark chocolate, black cherries, cassis. Tannins are still present. Good length.

Nicely lifted nose of blueberry, cola and flavors of lean blueberry, moderate tannins and a black peppery, drying finish. This probably is not getting better but its good now.

Definitely less accessible and open compared to the Oreno 2015 JY shared with us half a year ago, this 2007 was both tight as well as stubborn!
Nose was muted, the colour of the wine made me guess it was circa 2014 (so wrong!!) and the blackfruits and blackcurrant notes were all there.
However, the Chinese herbal notes on the nose, then later on the palate too was off-putting. Perhaps these were some barnyard notes?
Super Tuscan made of 50% Sangiovese, and 25% Merlot and 25% CS. Thanks SKT for sharing this blind pour, where we got this so wrong both in vintage and varietal!

Fully matured wine. Decanted. Perfect cork, no sediment. First impression - amazing nose full of dark berries, raisins, leather & earth. Great balance with a variety of flavors black cherry, plum, baking spice. Nice length to add. Great showing.

Old shoe leather, tobacco, cassis and wild herbs combine to make a wonderful expression of an Italian Bordeaux blend. Elegant and exciting with great depth. Aromatically pleasing. Great juice.

Medium plus intensity ruby with some bricking at rim. Somewhat closed with an earthy / barnyard character not noticed in any other vintages. New belt leather. Minimal fruit. Tannins are very fine and just slightly chewy but wow is this hot. Acidity is medium – very modest compared to other vintages. The hay / earth / barnyard note continues on the palate, accompanied by ripe black plum and black cherry, menthol and milk chocolate. Good length.
powerful and complex bordeaux-styled supertuscan, mouthfilling with its hints of underbrush, leather and graphite. Fruit is almost gone and some light spices sometimes appear. In its full maturity and probably at the end of its best drinking window.

Shows that these wines need to be kept. Notes below describe the wine well. This example shows well integrated tannins, lovely complexity and length. Not massively complex but very seductive.

Mildly hazy, very deep ruby. Clean nose of pronounced intensity with aromas blueberries, prunes, flint, chocolate, Leather, wet leaves. Wine is developing. On the palate it is dry, medium plus acidity, medium plus tannins, high alcohol, full body, pronounced flavor intensity of prunes, bitter chocolate, charred wood tar. Finish is medium. Very good wine, drink now but plenty of power left. BIG, BOLD, BEAUTIFUL!!!

Notes below are good and show this wine is not universally adored. Beautiful dark robe with super legs. Nose a touch astringent but with a summer pudding hint that is attractive. Lovely berry attack with plenty of length and then acidity reappears. Lots of tannin still there. Will now leave some for 3 years ie 15 from vintage

Maturing, but not harmonious. Here, black fruits stand apart from red fruit highlights—just not sure the cab and Sangiovese are better together than apart. Oak nicely intercepted and the aromatics really highlight the experience. Tannins still a bit drying. Good, drinking well enough.

Brought with us to Vintage on Fifth, Crystal River ($20 corkage). As usual, we had a couple of Proseccos while giving this some time in the decanter. Took well over an hour before it began to show its best, and then continued to improve until it was gone. Not quite as expressive on the nose as previous bottles, but absolutely spectacular on the palate. Full-bodied, rich and velvety in texture. Offers a mouthwatering combination of pure, delicious plum, blackberry and dark currant fruit, with a moderate acidity. This has smoothed out tremendously over the past few years. The tannins are now so silky and refined. The polished finish features a prominent note of black licorice and goes on for almost a minute. Harmonious, complex and delicious. This is by far the best vintage of Oreno I have ever tasted and it seems to be getting better and better with age. 50+5+12+19+9=95

Fruit a bit reserved. Initially, got a lot of oak, but with time open it was much more balanced. As others mentioned, might have a touch too much acidity, but overall drinking nicely.

Big decline since the last tasting...Fruit has faded and oak dominates. Tannins and structure all well intact and the wine is still very dry! No storage issues here...Bottles from same batch, immaculately cellared. The good news is that some of the sweetness is gone, but now more acidity is poking out. This is what you get in big, over extracted wines when they age...Many (not all) fall out of balance and get clunky...better drank young. DRINK

Decanted 3 hours. Day 1, pleasant enough, just a big modern Italian wine. If you'd told me it was Saxum or some Parkerized Rhone wine, I'd believe you. Given that it was so big, I corked it for days 2 and 3, which were more of the same, just worse. This wine makes me think that it's built to be larger than life, then falls on its face, never in a good place to enjoy. Scored at its best on day 1, with the caveat that I don't like this style, I think I'm being nicer than I should be, but others who like this style will go much higher.

This felt a bit over extracted and over oaked. In short, a bit over the top and made not to Italian standards, but more tailored for some US based wine magazine owner in order to gain high points (again)… Nose with wood, dry red dust, green herbs and an overload of dark fruits. Palate shows extracted and very ripe fruit, with wood coming thru and a bit of heat and alcohol. Again, clear signs of being crafted for something specific, more than trying to be what it could and should be. The 2006 was much better than this, in my opinion. Still, worked okay with pasta and grilled lamb with a spicy tomato sauce, but beaten by a mile by the other wines enjoyed tonight. Hybris? (or RP fever?)

wow, a really nice spot right now. Decanted multiple hours, and had with pasta with meat sauce. Well integrated, still plenty of acid left to go even longer. Coated your mouth and tongue, medium to long finish, bright cherries, but not overpowering. Very impressive. Drink now, or continue to hold a few more years

Splash decanted. Clear, deep ruby. A pronounced nose of blackcurrant, plum, prune, dark cherry, cedar, green bell peppers (faint) and Chinese herbs (less faint with air). Developing. High acidity, medium(+) body, medium(+) grippy tannins. Mouth-caressing rich dark fruits. Medium(+) finish. A big, driven wine, still rather in its infancy. Quite ripe and primary. Pair this with some serious meats (think churrascaria). Better yet, wait for another 2 or 3 years.

Tasted blind. Late night impromptu speed tasting session at ES. Aired in decanter for 2 hours prior. Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of Chinese herbs, GuiLingGao, dark red cherries, dark plums. Developing. Tight and shut down at times. On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.5%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of Chinese herbs, dark red cherries, dark plums. Some cassis and cedar flitting in and out with air. Medium+ finish. Very good quality. Rather tight and still showing off more primary character. No tertiary development yet. I was guessing that this was a rather ripe Cabernet Sauvignon blend, possibly a well-made youngish Languedoc wine, as there was a smidgen of something wild-like on the palate. Blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot. Aged in 100% new oak. The last vintage with Sangiovese in the blend I think. No more Sangiovese from 2008 onwards. I am kind of with Stephen Tanzer on this one, in that it feels Cabernet Sauvignon dominant. Maybe the Sangiovese is contributing to the slight wild sensation. Probably this wine is just tight at this point in time also. Give this another 5+ years.
Amazing wine. Beautiful nose of black currant and dark berries. Plush mouth feel with silky tannins and plenty of dark fruit. Drinking beautifully right now with a 2 hour decant.

Wow. Deep purple. Decanted for two hours and was worried this was still a tannic beast, but then started to soften. Wonderful balance. A youthful but stunning wine at nine years old. I would leave this for another three to four years but should be 95+ thereafter.

Tuesday Night Double Blind Tasting, $40+ (Bin 75): Dark color. Something says Italy to me on the palate, SuperTuscan, Merlot blend. I guessed 2006 Oreno, just off by a year. Still pretty youthful, but to me textbook Oreno style.

Eucalyptus and plum on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, raspberry, and plum, with notes of black pepper, earth, and cocoa on the medium to long finish, with a bit of jamminess, strong acidity, and no noticeable tannins. This is in something of an international style, but the Italian character still comes through. It was at its best immediately after opening; after about 90 minutes it started to develop the sweet cherry taste of a wine that has had too much air, and some alcohol started showing, indicating that the drinking window on this may be shorter than I thought. Very good value at a bit under $50.

Drank over three days. This tastes as young or younger than it did nearly three years ago! The oak is better integrated and the wine now features a distinctly rustic Sangiovese character, including tomatoes (in all forms of preparedness), Italian herbs, sanguinity, and mineral ore rust. The Merlot adds pithy red fruit, potpourri, and dust elements, and the Cabernet Sauvignon purple berry and purple flower redolence, focused intensity, and lithe structure. A harmonious smoky vein is also present. Acid is medium plus to high, dusty to grainy tannins medium to medium plus. Juicy, supple texture, palate-coating, charmingly bracing at the middle and back. The stalwartly seductive finish begs another taste. The wine is in an early drinking window and it likely needs 15 or more years to peak. 95-96.

If you draw a very crooked line, somewhere between St. Emilion and Napa Valley, you will come across a place called Sette Ponti. If you are a fan of big Napa wines, you should explore Sette Ponit's Oreno bottling. This is a very powerful wine, enriched in Merlot flavors with a hybrid feel of Napa extraction, and some animalistic rusticity. I know that this wine is supposed to have a fair share of CS in it, but all I could taste was Merlot, Merlot, and Merlot. This is not a bad thing, its just that the meat and black raspberry elements are very pronounced in this rich, full bodied, high energy and exciting wine. Too powerful for me to drink on a regular basis, but this is why I first started digging wine, so I guess with age, the wines change and so have I! Drink or Hold...Super toned, brightly acidic and ripe, with great grip!
This was my WOTN for NYE2016. Drinking well right now - a BIG wine... With plenty of fruit... Silky mouth... still youthful. Drank from a mag. Lucky to have 2 more
Splash decanted as it needed to open up before drinking. Classic nose of dried fruit, cedar and clove. Smooth on the palate but a short finish kept the score down a bit for me.

Showed a lot of oak upon opening and splash decanting helped. Followed over 4-5hrs. Dark fruited, with a plum chocolate spice nose. Palate had a little more lift than the nose, with a profile more toward red, fine sandy tannins that turn slightly dry on the finish but never bitter. Moderate the long length, repeating cedar spice notes, hint of chocolate, and gravel. Good, though slightly more in an "international" style than I would prefer--but still a delicious wine. Drink with decant or hold for short to medium term as its drinking plateau is near. It did get fresher and more vibrant through the evening.

Another terrific wine from Oreno. Wonderfully complex with dark, blackberry fruit, violet, mocha and smooth spicy finish that tingles in your mouth for a minute. While previous vintages required two to three hours to decant, this bottle opened up after 30 minutes. Very approachable and ready to drink and enjoy.

First one of these in 14 months. Consistent with my previous note. Still a youthful-looking opaque, dark crimson in color - but lightening at the edge now. Shows a complex - though subtle - nose of plums, violets, earth, vanilla and spice. Full-bodied, rich and very plush in texture. This has put on a bit of weight since last time, but remains elegant in style. There's slightly less definition and focus to its plum and black currant fruit now, giving this an even better sense of balance. The long, polished finish is loaded with tangy, dark fruit and pretty notes of oak, espresso and spice. The ultra-fine tannins are beautifully integrated. Modern in style, but so balanced, velvety and refined. Remains the best Oreno I've ever tasted. The '06 is still a massive, tannic monolith and may never be as good as this is now. 50+5+12+18+9=94
After a two hour decant, this titanic Tuscan was ready to rock. Deep, dark red in the crystal, with crimson rims, the legs are spectacular and muscular. The body is full and rich. The nose is delicate flowers and fields. Ripe cherries, Perugina chocolate, Illy espresso, and anisette dance across the palate. Fine tannins and a lengthy finish complete this operatic extravaganza. Bravissimo!

This needed a big decant and I couldn't because we purchased off a restaurant wine list. I'd say it needs at least an hour. It really needs 3 more years to let the oak integrate because I'll get in your face. Has the stuffing to be a really nice super Tuscan.

We really enjoyed this wine. We didn't decent this wine but it definitely needs about 45 minutes to 1 hour. The wine aroma was extremely strong. The smell filled the room instantly. Once poured, the wine had a leather, earthy smell but started to open up about 20 minutes. Great Italian wine and this will only get better. Great buy for the price. This wine will be ideal in 5 years.

Fantastic wine with great structure, acidity, balance, luscious dark fruits and a long finish. I will try my utmost not to open my next until 2016, mine tasted a little too young. Some people mention pop and pour, I’m not so sure about that. I drank over three days and for me the third day was best after it had softened a little and opened up more. It would be a crime to drink this within the first couple of hours of opening.

I would score this right in the range of where the other scores are and it is drinking really well right now. Dark, dried fruits of cherries, raspberries, blackberries and fruitcake with notes of kirsh, dried tobacco, spice and vanilla. Medium finish with layered complexity.

Dark garnet turning crimson at the rim with reflective edges. The nose gives off red and black fruits, espresso, tobacco, Tuscan earth and dried oregano. The palate is full-bodied, persistently intense, sinewy but silky in texture. Flavors of black currant, black tea, graphite, smoke, and toasted vanilla form the core that finishes long, spicy and lifted. This is a great effort from Tenuta Sette Ponti. All the elements are there: great nose, layered complexity, balance, vibrant acidity and a long, eventful finish - a classic. Drink now with a 30-minute decant until 2027

Seattle Offline IV - Italian Wines (Henry's House (Seattle)): Clean nose of black currant and cedar. Black currant, blackberry, dark chocolate, and vanilla on palate. Pop and pour. Beautiful nose of plum and camphor. On the palate, black cherry, purple fruit, black pepper, and a bit of savory tapenade, with strong acidity and smooth tannins on the finish. This still tastes young to me; although it's in its drinking window, it's still dominated by rich fruit, even with the acidity as strong as it is. It should come into better balance and develop more complexity given a few more years. At a bit under $50 this was good to very good value for money.

Classic super tuscan, cab forward at first taste, evolving into the smoothness of merlot and bite of the Sangiovese. I consider this a prime example of a very well drinking super Tuscan. Goes well with meat based dishes, or pasta with tomato or bolognese. We had our bottle with tomato gazpacho and papardele with a pork bolognese, finishing it with a chocolate tart. This wine however can be accompanied simply with cheese and black olives. It is a meal in itself.

Had along side a 2009 Orma (Similar priced Super-Tuscan) and both showed really well with the Oreno maybe just beating its younger rival. The 2007 was made up of 50% Sangiovese and you can certainly tell. Earthy, rustic and full of the Italian twang that makes these wines so enjoyable. All enveloped by dark cassis, ripe tannins and a great finish. Really enjoyed this one.

Dark ruby, raspberry nose. Full body, chewy texture with expressive flavors of tart plum, graphite and raspberry. Great structure and long delicious finish. Great wine.

After having this http://tinyurl.com/q7wqsaj , I feel the need to try out Oreno. My impressions of the 2007 vintage in Tuscany have been that it's a very good, albeit warm year, good for early drinking rather than laying down for years. Unfortunately for me, that theory isn't quite right or ripe for Oreno 2007 ... This is still very young. I decant for one hour and out of the decanter notes of smoky blackberries dominate, together with some dark olives, pipe tobacco and a touch of minty herbs. Fruit is very much alive, but too me, the oak still takes to much place. Together with our hamburgers (stuffed with Parmigiano, olive oil and fresh basil) it works quite alright. But there is very much power today and to little elegance, to few nuances for this to be captivating. I'll hold on to this for at least three years before I revisit. I would not go as high as the average 92,5 on this, more like 90+ and hoping for potential to come through.

Red wine tasting - our house: Wine #4 of 4. Super Tuscan blend: 50% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 20% sangiovese. Woods, earth, dark berries on the nose. Lots going on with this Super Tuscan. The tannins are still strong, mouth-filling and probably need another couple years to mellow. Medium body and color. On the palate, raspberries and blackberries dance with spices, earth and a hint of leather. Doris and Jessica: No, because too tannic.

Did a pop'n'pour at a dinner party and this followed a 2007 Mas de Boislauzon Châteauneuf-du-Pape that was decanted for 3 hours so while I rated them the same on my scale, the Oreno probably could score 1 or 2 points higher with the same decant. The difference from the CdP was really apparent as this was more smoky and had darker fruit like blackberry as well as some Kalmata olive notes. Again shared with 6 other guests so only had a small glass but looking forward to spending more time with the next couple of bottles down the road.

Popped and poured. This wine is inky in the glass with marvelous aromas of black currant, violets and earth (Mouvedre-like). On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, opulent with the same currants, violets and earth, as well as dark fruits, oak and hints of honey-soaked tobacco and mocha. The wine has a mind-altering, but too tannic and oakey (for my taste, anyway) finish. Give this stupendous wine a few years in the cellar before tasting, and I predict that at that time, it may well approach perfection. Additional adjectives escape me, so I will conclude with a simple Wow.
Dark wine, a lot of dark fruit, mocha, some cedar. Bigger palate compared to 2005, still tannic, but again, balance with this bright dark fruit. Need a few years to come all together.

At a tasting graciously hosted by Bam_Man: Stunning, Exceptional, Exquisite, Luxurious, Harmonious!!! This is just the seventh wine I have rated above 95 points on CT.
Saturated purple color. The bouquet screamed that I would love the palate; it shows ink (always a clincher for me), graphite, floral scents, minerality, and fresh picked summer fruits and berries.
The palate is wonderfully layered, exceptionally structured, and very well balanced. Black Currant, Creme de Cassis, ink, pencil shavings, freshly crushed black rocks pulled from a bubbling mountain stream, hedonistic fruit, and fine pipe tobacco all came forward. The astounding texture allows the wine to glide over rather than settle on the palate. There is not a single part of the palate that this does not touch in the best possible ways. It features fine to chunky tannins throughout and great acid. In a (compound) word, mind-bending!
This will improve for some years to come. Alcohol and oak are bit prominent at present but should settle with time. Many thanks for sharing this celestial elixir Bam_Man!
A striking, opaque, dark crimson in color. Has a gorgeous Rhone-like nose of plums, violets, earth, vanilla and spice. Full-bodied, rich and very silky in texture. There's terrific depth and concentration to its plum and black currant flavors. The long, long finish is dripping with tangy, dark fruit and the ultra-fine tannins are beautifully integrated. A big wine - but so balanced, velvety and refined. Without a doubt the best Oreno I've ever tasted. The massive, monolithic '06 may eventually be as good as this. Time will tell. 50+5+13+18+9=95
Cab and smoky graphite dominated nose. Silky and intense spicy redcurrant on palate. Lacks some of the layering I was hoping for but a nice effort nevertheless.

Excellent pedigree and structure. In it's prime. Layers of crushed dark fruits on the nose. On the palette, the wine just sails on. I prefer my wines young, and this is in the zone. Tannins are well integrated, but still pronounced. Just simply superb. 93pts maybe a little tight.. Forgive any typo's, you know why!

Rating this based on potential. After an hour decant it was verrrry tannic, almost uncomfortably so, but you could get a really good sense of the quality fruit... lots of cherry, earth, leather and some spice. Look forward to the next bottle, but not for a few years at least...

NC Cindy Tasting. "Baller Night" (NC Wino's Stately Wayne Manor): Extremely dark in the glass and completely opaque, the nose on this leaps from the glass in comparison to the previous wine. It showed both blue- and blackberry, plum, and a scent similar to a freshly soaped baseball glove. The palate is really big, even after the four hour decant, showing big berries with solid structure, plus brown sugar (though the palate is not really sweet) and a bit of forest floor. The finish is long, if a tiny bit hot and lacking just a touch of elegance. That's not too surprising, given the 14.5% listed ABV, and everything else about this wine is in very good balance. The blend is 75% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet sauvignon and 5% Cabernet franc, the latter grape being more of a silent partner. This was good enough to be declared the dry wine of the night, and it's a relative bargain at the $50 purchase price. There's plenty of life ahead of this wine, but it is really nice right now.

Deep ruby. Elegant fruity nose, with cherry, leather, earth and cedar. A fruit bomb that we drank too young. Lovely wine, nice structure, great long finish. Notes of leather, currant, chocolate and blueberry.

Subtle, but complex, mineral, currant, vanilla and toast nose. Dry, full and firm with rich, solid fruit and ripe muscular tannins. Long, currant finish. 5/5

In short, a bit over the top and made not to Italian standards, but more tailored for some US based wine magazine owner in order to gain high points (again)…
Nose with wood, dry red dust, green herbs and an overload of dark fruits.
Hybris?

Great wine.

I opened this at our 1/25/14 Super Tuscan tasting. It had a wonderful, deep, rich bouquet of violet, plum, blueberry and spice aromas. The palate was rich, layered, smooth and dry with flavors of plum, blackberry, black currant and spice. 92+

Always a pleaser, and a little more mellowed and aged, yielding brilliant dark fruit. Had with Porchetta what a great combo!

Dark garnet; rich Cabby Italian nose, dark fruit, dock; powerful and rounded tannic structure, surprised the new oak was not glaring; a really solid wine.

It was good but probably still needs time. A little bit light on body but maybe it's because we drank it next to a 1996 Masseto.
