  • Opened at Octavium in HK. Slow-oxed for several hours before being served as the fifth in a flight.

This surprised me - beautiful sweet red fruit coming through, even though the black fruits were lurking behind. Some hints of herbaceousness and even peanut butter. Good intensity and balance in the palate, not too tannic, even though this is clearly a young(ish) Bordeaux and very much in its primary phase.

Clear upside and excited to see where this goes. Was hovering between a 93/94 but decided to be generous this time. Will check-in again in 3+ years to see if it's loosened up a little more and become even more expressive, but even at this current state it's not brooding or grumpy, and very enjoyable.

  • From a 375 mL bottle. Perfect fill. Tight, unsaturated cork. Not a hint of brick in the color. Restrained dark fruit nose with cinnamon. Tannins are mostly resolved and the mouthfeel is quite silky. Palate follows the nose. This will certainly hold and likely evolve nicely with time but for me it's great right now. I like the fruit and overall balance. I'm sure 750 mL bottles will behave differently. A beautiful '09 Right Bank wine.

  • Tasted with mr_mando: strong nose with black currents, blueberries. On palate back currents continue, pears, camphor, tannins well integrated, very dense, silky. Already very drinkable, but still young and many years to go.

  • My first ever Angelus, and an experience worth waiting over 2 years for. Wonderful!

60% Merlot and 40% Cab Franc, deep garnet colored, contrast of density and a silky mouthfeel. So very complex, hints of savoury too.

Thank you brother RL for the unplanned thrill we had of this (and the epic Palmer 96) beauty in Casa Rosa one Raya evening this weekend.

In terms of my Vivino scoring; 4.3 🌟 today, and will quite easily surpass 4.5 🌟 over the rest of this decade. For CellarTracker, I would reckon this is going to be a 95 pointer or more wine!

This is a wonderful introduction to a glimpse into the world of Angelus for us, so grateful to have the chance to enjoy this.. on the same week we had a Palmer 96, Le Machiolle Paleo 10, and a Dominus Napa 11 too! Selamat Hari Raya from Malaysia...

  • Coravin fun - Bordeaux (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Ripe plums, smells quite dense, a little liquorice, polished oak, sweet spice, quite reticent/closed on the nose. Concentrated ripe black plums; that concentration lends a little savoury note, dense, tight tannins are very woody, slightly chalky textured, alcohol warmth, oak, a little liquorice. Feels young but the oak is a little high for the fruit for me...

  • Guessed this an Italian Bordeaux blend or possibly a Masseto. Sweet tinges, ripe - 2009 Bordeaux hasn’t quite been my cuppa tea but this is a great representation if you like this vintage. 93/94

  • Two years since the last bottle, this hasn’t changed a bit. Note from 2020 still applies:

9/30/2020 Taking an early peek at this one. Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark purple to rim. Intense nose of mocha, plums, blackberries, pretty fruit driven without any earthy complexity. Very full bodied, lush ripe fruit, glossy palate-coating texture, decent balancing acidity, a bit of alcohol is evident, moderate tannins, long powerful finish. Very modern, no complexity yet (will it ever?) and far from a classic Bordeaux, but a great example of what it is.

  • Angelus 2009
    -
On the nose was a great depth of terroir and minerality, compounded with big juicy fruits, liquorice and violet.
    .
Chalky and dusty on the palate, with chewy tannins that need a few hours decanting to soften up. Then it was floral and even slightly jammy with mixed berries.
    .
This to me, is an almost perfect wine for many years to come. I can’t wait for it to develop more finesse.

  • Pristine bottle and cork, the latter hardly soaked. Blackish crimson color allowing yours truly to visualize the density and power of the wine. Decanted and aerated for an hour then drank over 90 minutes. Too quick I know but what can I say. Very opulent nose of candied berries, cassis, plums, sweet spices, mocha chocolate. On the palate very unctuous and powerful, dense, extracted, alcohol definitely being felt, tremendous structure and built to last however this wine will go through a variety of phases. Very primary at this stage, a baby despite its 12 years of age, great acidity mid palate, and a long spicy and tannic finish coated by the opulent fruit. Definitely worth following over the next 10 - 15 years, wallet and health permitting.

  • Coravin fun - Angelus & Lynch Bages (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Ripe plums, sweet spice, milk chocolate, peppery note (possibly induced by the alcohol) with time in the glass notes of baked blackcurrant and brambles, cream. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury but fruity, generous, integrated, still showing primary but balanced, travels very long on the finish. Yum.

  • 20 Vintages of Angelus (1988-2015): All wines tasted single blind. A few observations and conclusions: It seems that until more recently, Angelus focused on late picking, big wines with too much extraction. Most pre 2004 wines we tasted did not show well and are drying out or already have. The younger vintages showed better but only time will tell if the 2004 to 2015 vintages will age more gracefully. An experienced Angelus collector mentioned a style shift towards more finesse right after the promotion to Premier Grand Cru Classe A with the 2012 vintage. It would have been great to include more of the recent vintages (we had only 09/10/14/15) to better understand when and to what extent that shift happened. Still, there are some very good wines with the 2010 being the WOTN (rated 96+ pts, the structuredness, freshness and purity of the vintage shines through), narrowly ahead of the 2008 (96pts, these 2008 right banks are singing these days and are incredibly fresh) as well as two wines with 95 pts, the 2005 (slightly closed but lots of complexity and no structural deficits) and the 2015 (showcasing the stylistic shift: there aren’t many 2015s out there that share the light- and airiness and perfect ripeness level and purity with their respective 2010 counterparts).

TN: Very ripe dark fruit compote on the nose, quite jammy. On the palate there is a luxurious creaminess, so much luxurious oak, so much ripe fruit, quite a lot of weight from start to finish. Super ripe fruit, slightly candied, lots of it jammy, coffee, earthy notes. Great to drink but this is a very slutty wine. Very slutty, and I’m not sure if it will have a long life. I fear it might dry out like many of the wines before. Today, however, this drinks on a 94/95 pts level. Was quite obvious that this must be the 2009.

  • Angélus vertical (Fribourg): Angélus vertical of 20 vintages. Main observations were : 1/ Older vintages before the mid-2000s often suffered from drying tannin and showed a lot of extraction, 2/ Younger vintages quickly benefited from aeration hence decanting advised, 3/ the fruit profile became darker over time 4/ best vintage to drink today: 2004. All wines were directly poured with no prior decant and served in flights of 4.

    Tasting note:
Sweet, sexy and spicey with ripe, red berry fruit, some tobacco and vanilla and licorice. Later on salted caramel. Some heat on the palate, almost searing acidity with ripe and extracted fruit. Too much at first. A pretty amazing nose all in all and the palate in a second visit came across lighter and fresher. This could perform on quite a different level after a proper decant.

  • Still so young.. Bummer. I should have open it may be 10 years later.. or should have decant it correctly.

  • The aroma showed complexed dark berried and dried plum with aged smokiness. It had a rich texture and dimension with a vivid expression of the tannin. An undertone of damp bark, fungi and moss created a wonderful earthiness. The finish is more on the tannin than acidity.

This wine is like a mature man who meditates daily. He hunts truffles for fun and tells interesting stories in a calm manner.

  • 2 hours in the decanter

Vibrant, forward and enveloping nose of Kirsch and darker black fruits, milk chocolate, and ripeness. Big and rich.

Unctuous palate with strong, layers of dark fruit, grwat acidity, balanced and attractive oak balance, and firm acidity. Lots of dimension and merlot driven. Long finish with youthful excessive elements which make this somewhat of a behemoth.

Big and delicious; fun now but built for the long haul and will improve.

  • Tasted en primeur in April 2010 I was so impressed I went back and tried three different bottles! Thick, plummy, opaque and mineraly I gave it 97 and bought a half case.
Ten years on this is the first bottle from that case. Most vintages of Angélus I find overblown and there is an element of this here - it doesn't spoil the wine though. Big nose of blueberry and the palate as per en primeur. Huge length of finish. Loads of soft fruit and plentiful tannins. Whilst Palmer is more my style in this price bracket, I'll keep these and drink a bottle every few years. This is a wine that will last decades so there's no hurry.

  • From Coravin. Ripe plums, prunes, biscuit, plenty of oak, sweet spice, chocolate, very slight mint. Juicy acid (feels adjusted), liquorice, prunes over plums, a bitter note here as well. medium plus intensity grainy tannins close down the palate with the oak notes (chocolate/cream) travelling long.

  • Bordeaux 2009 Grand Cru / 10-years on / tasted blind: WOTN #2, but my least favorite in this flight. After an initial positive impression with lots of blue fruit, the wine came across as too Napaesque for me. Cassis syrup, plum. It does have the structure and acidity to support it, but we have gone astray here for my Bordeaux taste. Score higher if you like this style.

  • Really high intensity and slightly pompous aromas with really fabulous fruit image with clear blackberries, plums, salts, light bonfires and espresso tones. Clear nerve throughout the aroma picture that really charms. Lovely touch on this full-bodied wine that really just charms from the start. What a silky feeling! Lovely sweet darker red berries, dried licorice and with wonderful salt nerve that show the character of the soil. This is power, yet high finesse. Lovely acidity and fabulous tannin structure. Fantastic long finish. One of the very best wines of the vintage. 99 points.

  • The perfume delivers with ease its complex array of coffee bean, licorice, dark cocoa, plums, cherry and truffle. On the palate, the wine is full, rich, dense and intense, with a silky, cashmere texture and layers of fruit. This is developing quite well and it could pop another point if it continues on its upward trajectory.

  • definitely still a very young wine and should better be kept for quite a few years in the cellar. This being said, for its young age, this wine is clearly hugely promising, strong, rich, long tasting in mouth, with tastes of pepper, leather and tobacco, tannins still present but already beautifully harmonised. Clearly a promising star. But is it a surprise for a wine like the Angelus and a year like 2009 ?

  • 2009 Bordeaux 10 years in the bottle 2-day horizontal; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019 (Fribourg): Part of a grand Bordeaux 2009 tasting spanning 2 days that revealed 1) a right bank struggling with overripe fruit and overwhelming tannins, 2) wide spreak between top performers and laggards, 3) left bank, and especially Margaux, outshone the right bank cousins, 4) Top wines: Palmer, Margaux, Cheval Blanc, Vieux Chateau Certan.

    Tasting note:
Ripe red fruit, a bit of leather, floral notes. Heavy and full bodied and a too dry palate. But otherwise likely to evolve into a beauty over time.

  • Bordeaux 2009 - 10 Years On - 47 Reds; 6/23/2019-6/24/2019: 2009 Bordeaux after 10 years. 48 red wines. The left bank (average rating 94.2) clearly trumps the right bank (92.6): Elegance, purity and freshness vs over-extraction, ripeness and oxidation. But there are some winners on the right bank (Cheval, Petrus, Hosanna for now, Lafleur, Trotanoy medium-term) but the highest scores were given to left bank wines (Margaux #1 overall, Palmer, Mouton, for now, Latour, St. Juliens medium-term). I guess purists will not like the loads of oak-derived aromas which in some wines are great but can make the wines a bit slutty (Cheval, Margaux, quite a lot of right banks). But there are plenty of more classically shaped wines too. Overall, the 2009s are a lot of fun with many pockets of greatness but I would be very selective on the right bank. If you like more elegant, subtle and classic wines I would focus on 2005/2010/2016. All wines tasted blind and without decanting.

TN: Had not an easy stand in flight with Cheval Blanc which was so much more expressive. Fairly muted at first and just slowly opening up with some swirling. The complexity is on an elevated level with relatively well-delineated aromas of red berries, smoke, coffee, cacao and limestone as the main pillars. Very fine and well-integrated tannins, good fresheness, good length, just some very small signs of alcohol. I guess if this get the proper decant (8+ hours is advised) it can shine more today. The score definitely has some upside.

Average blind score 4 tasters: 95.0
Rank: 15th out of 48 wines
(shared rank with Clos L'Eglise, Pape Clement)

  • Yes! This is an aromatic beauty, with hints of tobacco, liquorice, leather, red berries, blueberries, bramble, raspberries and vanilla. Charred cedar and plum too, with a hint of earth. On the palate it has medium acidity and well balanced with the medium + tannins. These tannins are evolved, soft and silky. Long finish, medium + body and medium alcohol. Wow all those flavours are still taste in here, pronounced. Amazing!

  • For a wine this young, this is really drinking quite nicely and is completely approachable. I actually expected the oak to be more dominant, but it didn't stick out much. The fruit was big, ripe, and in the forefront. The plum and blueberry was so incredibly ripe and juicy, along with fresh herbs, violets, anise, spice, and espresso. Full-bodied, powerful, and with good tannin integration. The tannic structure is obvious, but it's just so well-balanced. Medium level of acidity and freshness. The finish was long and full of fruit. I did detect a touch of heat as well. Overall, this young wine held its own, even in the face of a number of fully mature and charming wines.

  • My personal fav of the day of the 9 years we had to suffer through.....intense fruit on the nose, concentrated like a Cali red blend as far as bright, juicy fruit but no jam whatsoever, just powerful bright red fruit. Strong red currant and cassis, eloquent tannins and a verrrry elongated and classy finish. Just a superb wine for anyone who appreciates the profile of a classy Cali red in their Bordeaux!.

  • A few decades of Chateau Angelus and others (Fig&Olive, Newport Beach, CA, USA): An incredible wine. I had this with many other vintages of Ch. Angelus (including '10), and this stood out as my favorite.

Big aromatic nose with dark red fruit, cherry, and berry; complex flavors of ripe cherry, red fruit, truffle, and charcoal. Silky texture and surprisingly drinkable right now.

Obviously this has more tertriary flavors to offer up in the future but its so lush and ripe right now that I'd have a hard time keeping my hands off of this.

  • I have to say this wine is very likely to be a 100p wine with some more maturing. It is however in absolute harmony right now and very very good. Impressed in other words.

  • My last CT note from 2012 seemed accurate. There is great ripeness (but not pushed) in the merlot, with the cab franc providing freshness that is lacking in some 2009 St Emilions. I generally prefer the 2010s but Angelus have done a great job here. Cinnamon and five spice aromas are developing and there is more instore here. Comparing this to the 2015 Angelus there seems a stylistic shift now in the more recent vintage (which the winemaker acknowledged to me) to riper cab franc. Surprised critics haven't picked up on this. Will be interesting to see how the 2015 ages. Drink from 2025. 97pts

  • Enjoyed a half-bottle of 2009 Château Angélus with Jean-Bernard Grénie. This is a great vintage of Angélus, but it couldn't be more different than the 2010. While the 2010 is powerful, incredibly concentrated, and with big-time structure, the 2009 (albeit from a more evolved half-bottle) is much more lush and accessible. The fruit is super-ripe, full of plum, blackberry, and blueberry. Lots of minerality, truffle, and espresso. Should be fun to compare the 2009 and 2010 over the upcoming decades

  • Tasting, brief note. This had been decanted for a couple of hours before tasting. Black cherries and plum with sweet and savory spice. Still showing some protruding new oak, but this is moving towards a wine a incredible depth, balance and complexity. Very tasty now, but with really exciting potential in the 2020-2050 timeframe.

  • Terroir-istes International - France, Bordeaux, St. Emilion, Angelus Vertical (Groot Constantia): (Tasted Blind): 60 Merlot; 40 CF: This 14.5% wine has a mid-plus red-black colour. The aromas are warm and ripe with red fruits, chocolate, espresso, truffle, mint, and plum liqueur - even hint of black pepper. A thick, richly textured entry, this is an opulent wine with excellent concentration. There is remarkable plushness on the mid-palate with dark (70%) chocolate flavours, baked plums, blackberry, cocoa, coconut and a little animal quality. The finish, whilst long, is a bit thick and sweet, feeling generous, the fruit veering more to a compote sweetness. It is a bit bling and too sweet, appealing to an audience that likes more extensive front-end wine. I wondered whether the pH was relatively high as there was a soapy element and the acid didn’t support it.

  • Less fine on the nose than the 2010 - very intense and expressive with ripe dark fruit notes, menthol, spices, smoky oak and a nice floral touch. On the palate very powerful and big with lots of ripe, sweet fruit. Slightly syrupy and heavy. Great texture and superb length. 94-95+

  • What a tour de force, with tremendous prospects in the future. Very expressive on the nose, ripe and inviting. Fine grained tannins complementing rich, balanced dark fruit notes on the palate. I detected mocha, violence, licorice and smoky flavors. Plenty of acidity to keep things in line. Very impressive.

  • Cave d'argent notes are ptecise. Big powerful tannic dark fruit structure. Didn't have long decant and didn't really shine because of that. I'm expecting she will unfold like the 1990 a min 15-20 year wine till really approachable ... Then fireworks

  • The wine is clear and bright with a deep ruby colour.

The nose is clean and developing, showing medium(+) intensity aromas of black fruit (very ripe dark cherries, ripe dark plums, ripe black currants), oak (cocoa, cedar, clove, vanilla), flowers (lavender) and hints of pungent spices (black pepper).

The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has high fine-grained tannins and a medium(+) alcohol. It has a full body and medium(+) intensity flavours of black fruit (very ripe dark cherries, ripe dark plums, ripe black currants), oak (cocoa, cedar, clove, vanilla), flowers (lavender) and hints of pungent spices (black pepper). The finish is medium(+).

It is an outstanding quality wine. It has a persistent enough finish and concentrated flavours that balance well the tannins and alcohol. It also shows complexity provided by oak ageing.

It is too young. The aromas and flavours are still somewhat closed, this wine will benefit from 3-5 years of ageing before consumption, and it will develop more complex tertiary aromas in another 10+ years.

  • 2014 New York Wine Experience Trip; 10/14/2014-10/21/2014 (New York City, NY): Albeit young, this opaque ruby wine has all the makings of a legendary bottling for Angélus. Intense aromas and flavors of cassis, black cherry, terrragon, espresso and dark chocolate are supported by fresh acidity and substantial fine-grained tannins. Full-bodied, layered and with well-integrated alcohol, it builds in the middle and closes very long. This is classic Bordeaux which will benefit from cellaring. Drink 2020-2040.

  • Bordeaux 2009 vs. 2010 - Check in on 50 well known Chateaux: Dark purple. Complex nose of dark fruit, sweet spices, coffee and a touch of toast. On the palate very soft and succulent but with good freshness. Outstanding balance of sweetness and freshness for a 2009 right banker. I guess it is the Cab Franc that did the job here. Very well done, a great Angelus and a great right bankers by any standard. As for style, the 09 has more coffee/toast aromas while the 10 is more in the blue fruit spectrum. (Group Score 96.2/RP99)

  • K&L #1

Nose- floral quality... not green, alcohol presence, oak, nice fruit in the back.

Palate- extremely tannic, grainy. Intense introduction to the palate but faded rather quickly, lacking depth perhaps. Slight bitter note at the end. Slight vegetal note in the background. Good texture. High acidity, but balanced with the fruit and tannins, probably contributed more to the initial taste.

  • Magnificent and dense, but not too extracted. This has elegance and balance for such a large wine and emerging minerality. A great Angelus... my rating will look low if the perfume improves (others noted, but my sample was muted) and the wine becomes more precise. If it does, this could become of the best right-bank wines in 2009. 96-98pts

  • Inky purple in colour. Inviting nose. Lovely on the palate, fleshy, big mouthfeel, fruit, hints of liquorice. Smooth tannins - they don't seem too overwhelming at the moment. Modern.

  • 2009 Angelus is opaque. Ripe dark berries, oak, licorice, minerals, and black raspberry aromas pop from the glass. This fleshy, flashy, sensuous, thick wine coats your palate with rich, ripe dark berries. Hubert de Bouard thinks the 2009 is a better wine than 2005. I do not agree. But the 09 is a stunning wine. 96-98 Pts
