With some Brioche notes on the nose. They say the oldest or one of the very few Champagne houses that is still family owned. Which gives them allot of access to premier cru and grand cru. They make it the old school way - no malo, it doesn't happen naturally. In the 1950s this changed across the region, but not for them. Lanson, Krug and Salon are the exceptions there. Freshness and crispness but longer aging on the lees is needed to balance that out. So this is 2016 balance vintage and then disgorged '22. And this goes back 1998, bouzy 2003, and then a solera of the black going back 20 years. Long aging for the yeast and bready, and then the spices and layers.

brvino Wine Tasting #4 - Sparkling Wines (brvino Undergraduate Wine Club at UCLA): 08/2021 disgorgement. Base vintage - 2016. Beautiful tiny bubbles. Classic toasty nose, the said toast even appears slightly burnt. Maybe pie crust and caramelised apple. Lemon oil and a little bit of wool surprisingly. It’s actually quite a nice nose. Not a very full mousse but it’s coating. I get medium acidity, but I wish it was higher than that. A slight elegant bitterness. No sweetness. Apples and lemon in the mouth. Some burnt toast again. Nice and really long finish with apple pie notes. I think, this was the wine’s most impressive property. 8/18

The wine looks light gold colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like grapefruit, lemon, pear, mineral, toast, orange blossom and baker's yeast. It tastes like grapefruit, lemon, lime, apple, pear, mineral, toast, orange blossom, biscuity, bready and baker's yeast. The body is medium. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has high acidity.

2019 disgorgement: As always, a good value. Drinkable now (four years after disgorgement), but the acidity is still quite high and it will benefit from more time in the cellar. The bubbles are quite discreet, so it is more like a good white wine, to the lean end, with a nice dose of green-apple acidity.

Retail $38. 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. A return to the better, first bottle that we had. Similar notes to those earlier bottles. 91 Points.
Blind Champagne Tasting--Bring A Bottle That Represents Value: 8 grams of dosage. 50% Chard, 35% Pinot Noir and 15% Pinot Meunier. 2016 base, with 40% reserves. We were told at the table that this was $18 at Costco currently, which really nailed the theme last night for 'bring a value Champagne'. Some toast in the aroma, then initially grippy and tight, with what I thought was some imprint of petrol. Sweetish kind of fennel in the finish. Not bad for $20!
Served blind. Classic sulfur reduction oak nose. The palate comes off again like a more classic big house Champagne. Nicely fresh with pith on the finish. Comes off as Pinot based to me. This probably wins the 'value' category on the night which was the theme. This is a solid Champagne at a decent price. Those are increasingly rare. This one was base 2016.

Pretty straightforward but tasty Champagne, faintly leesy apple and lemon, slight cheese danish, etc. Doesn't really have the energy to balance the apple richness, but it's pretty close. Almost like a dictionary definition of entry level champagne- expressive and enjoyable, but not at all standout. In my limited experience with the region, not among my general faves.

Retail $38. 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. Upon pulling the cork, I noticed that this bottle clearly had some age on it as it took a while to expand. Similar notes, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed with this bottle, and not due to the age. It was a bit listless and even disjointed. Still Very Good, but I have had better from this wine.

Fairly textbook, if uninspiring champagne. Pronounced brioche nose, with some tart apples. The palate shows quite a bit of acidity and a moderate amount of yeastiness. Lacks breadth but drinkable enough.

Disgorged 2011 - a bottle abandoned at the back of the cellar.
Golden hued and with an intense nose of baked apple, dried apricot, almond, pastry, marmalade, and orange blossom. The palate is complex with loads of patisserie notes and yellow fruits. The mousse is gentle. It falls a bit short on the finish.

This nonvintage cuvée (with a high percentage of Pinot Noir) shows a fine mousse with pleasant autolytic characters. The creamy, fresh brioche expands to a touch of marmite and apple and citrus that hint at complexity. With medium acidity, the wine lacks a little freshness. Dry, this is an enjoyable Champagne without wowing, closing with a touch of spice.

Retail $38. 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. Over the years, I have tried a ton of champagne, a ton. I could count on one hand, however, the number of wines I have tried from Lanson, which I believe is the #1 seller of champagne in France. My previous note for this wine seems to be rather close to spot on, so I'll leave it at that. Similar notes.

This was an excellent bottle. Disgorged 07/2021, base wine - 2016, coming with crunchy red apples, red currant, fine mousse that could be a benchmark for the category, chiselled acidity (no surprise). Delicious, inviting, one bottle is just not enough.

Out of a jero. It's got that acid that is high enough that it really jumps out at you. Served a bit on the cool side and so less expressive. As it warms a bit it's kindof a basic brioche. Drinks fine.

Disgorged in September 2015. Medium straw golden colour. Stone fruit, apple, almond paste, nuts, biscuit, brioche, and a hint of smoke, with good acidity, slightly coarse mousse of rather big bubbles, and good length of the lightly bitter finish. Amazing what five years can do to a champagne that was simple and boring its youth.

Dear Adam.J, this botlle (also mainly, 65%, from the '15 vintage) had its dégorgement in June 2020 and showed a certain potential, although at the moment somewhat lineair, with a ripe acidity, friendly mousse, a bite and a good finish with gentle bitters, The hints of cocoa give me the signal for a nice future and more points. The local supermarket decided to sell the last 8 bottles for half the price (€ 15) and I was so friendly to buy the lot! So, dear Adam J. I am also happy with this well made champagne, but I start with less ponts.
Fine bubble stream. Light gold, in color. Peach, raspberry, green pear, citrus, nuts, toasted brioche, cream, chalk, mineral. Lively acid, on a creamy citrus finish.

Retail $38. 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier. Pale straw with a decided flinty, matchstick, dirty nose. Those aromas are so powerful, in fact, that it is near impossible to detect any sort of fruit here, initially. Eventually, I can find a bit of pear and lemon rind behind all that distraction, but this is still the funkiest nose of the flight. Another wine where the palate far outplays the nose: good fruit, nice acidity, complexity, and all the stuffing. But that nose… thedrunkencyclist.com

Not a wine I'd have bought but for three things - I wanted a sparkling wine to add to an old still Coteaux-Champenois white, as an experiment; my local shop has a limited selection; and this had the largest seasonal discount. My experience of Lanson NV is that it is rather too abrasive and acidic young. Since the last time I had this, the label has been redesigned and I must commend the house on adding lots of extra useful information (see below).
Pale. Light, mildly saline nose, white flowers and lemon. Surprisingly not too acidic-tasting, but there's a strong malic streak, really racy sour apple. Good concentration, very creditable, though rather linear. Clean as a whistle. Worked well for its intended purpose too!

Disgorged March 2013. Starts of showing a nicely mature toasty, buttery richness, but quite quickly shows a little more spikes and acidic. Decent enough for what it is, but more fun as a kir royale after a glass or two. Suspect this is 2011 base, and possibly creaking as a result. ***

Old school champagne with a generous dosage. This was from the 1960's and I doubt the modern equivalent is nearly this good. Rich, earth, mushroom, and sherried flavors still with acidity and minerality. Alas this is my last bottle.

A blend of Pinot Noir (50%), Chardonnay (35%) and Pinot Meunier (15%), no MLF.
Pale lemon yellow color. Somewhat linear nose of yeast, French bread, some fresh citrus fruits and a little bit of ripe red apples. The wine is dry, crisp and youthful on the palate with medium body and bright flavors of ripe golden apples, leesy yeast, some zesty citrus fruits, a little bit of bready autolysis, light notes of white peach, a hint of tangy salinity and a touch of sweetness from the dosage. The acidity feels high whereas the mousse comes across rather smooth and creamy. The finish is crisp, refreshing and rather straightforward with medium-long flavors of tangy salinity, some zesty citrus fruits, a little bit of ripe red apple, a hint of yeasty autolysis and a touch of stony minerality.
A crisp, clean and linear NV Champagne that feels quite ripe yet rather lean. Enjoyable, but lacking in depth and character. I wonder if this is from a warmer vintage or if this lack of nuance is because the wine is just so young that it hasn't had time to develop any interesting flavors? Lanson's Black Label can be quite delightful if given enough age - and it certainly can take on some serious aging in a cellar - but apparently it doesn't offer much in its youth.

(Disgorged in the early 1980s, 50% Pinot Noir, 17% Meunière and 33% Chardonnay) Golden yellow colour. Mature nose showing dried fruit, yeast and citrus flowers. Palate still showing a nice and fresh acidity at first, but with all the added post-disgorgement years it has smoother out a lot which is showing on the mid, before the bitterness takes over on the lengthy finish also showing the high dosage that helps a bit to smooth out the finish. This is good, but I’m surprised to how much the dosage still stands out..

Disgorged 2016, some breadiness developing on an acidic complex champagne. Very enjoyable. Bought an old one with no date on it, also great drinking, anyone know what year they started placing the disgorged dates on the bottles?
July 14 disgorgement. . Still surprisingly crisp and zingy. Cork not yet straight with a slight bulge to the midriff. Clean and fresh. Just a slight hint at breadiness. Good but not yet as mature as I was hoping. *** holds up well, and consistently, on day two.

Plum Market Fall Luxury Tasting (Chicago, IL): Very thin and surprisingly high acid for a big-house entry-level champagne, especially given the 8 g/L dosage. Tart on the palate; simple and not particularly interesting.
Disgorged 12/2013. Dark yellow color. A nice complexity with yeast, apples, white flowers, minerals. Medium to long finish. So nice. The bottle time has helped a lot.
NobleRottersSydney - even year Shiraz (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): [Aaron] Disgorged 03/2016. Lovely, slightly developing nose of yeast and grapefruit. Similar palate, with some autolysis characters, but also fresh and lemony. Medium weight, and a medium length finish courtesy of Lanson’s usual medium-sized creamy bubbles. Medium acidity maintains the freshness. About fair value for the mid-$40s it seems to cost these days. Can be kept a while.
Disgorged in August 2015. Medium gold, with fine, medium/intense perlage. Apple, lemon, almond, biscuit and brioche as well as hints of wild honey and smoky mineral notes, with creamy mousse, slightly tart acidity and very good length of the bruised apple-infused finish. The dry, medium-bodied, reasonable balanced champagne has benefited from the additional time in the cellar. An experience I often make with the Lanson Black Label. I always found it rather boring in its youth, but usually thought it to be quite decent after 3+ years in the cellar.

Drank this along with a 1961 Dom Perignon. The reason I paired this is because it came from a private cellar in England and they knew that the wine was originally purchased in the 60's. So this being a 1960's wine I thought the comparison would be interesting . This was really first rate. A very similar flavor profile to the Dom with sherry, hazelnut, mushroom and wet earth flavors. There was a good mineral background with very good acidity. Very long on the palate and improved over time. There were some people in the group who preferred the Lanson to the Dom Perignon. I am not sure this note will help anyone who is looking at a modern Lanson though.
We bought out 2 bottles from the cellar the other day; the labels were fairly well disintegrated, although we could still read them. A little research the following day and it appears that these 2 bottles were on an inventory that my brother and I took on our late Fathers cellar in 2009. I have no idea how long these have been in the cellar for, but our best guess would be 15-20 years. Consensus among the 7 of us for supper, was that they would probably be shot; alas not, and on opening, most agreed that this was some of the best champagne we had ever tasted. Golden yellow in colour, mineraly, soft; the acidity almost completely gone and the bubbles small and sparse. Where does one buy NV champagne with 10+ years of bottle age, as I'd like to know if its possible to find such a thing.

A blend of Pinot Noir (50%), Chardonnay (35%) and Pinot Meunier (15%), no MLF. Aged for a minimum of 3 years before release. Disgorged in October 2014. 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind.
Youthful pale yellow color. Ripe and juicy nose with intense aromas of honeydew melon, creamy autolysis, some sweet golden apples, a little bit of brioche with custard, light peachy tones, a hint of mushroomy character and a touch of hay with a subtle whiff of sappy greenness. Overall the nose feels very youthful. The wine is dry, balanced and medium-bodied on the palate with intense flavors of red apples, slivered almonds, some ripe citrus fruits, a little bit of stony minerality, light autolytic notes of French bread, a hint of steel and a touch of apple peel bitterness. The wine is very high in acidity with an ample and persistent mousse. The finish is ripe, fresh and quite acid-driven with rather long flavors of tart green apples, sweeter red apples, some ripe citrus fruit tones, a little bit of steely minerality, light creamy tones and a hint of custard.
A very fresh, crisp and impressively focused entry-level NV that is still remarkably youthful seeing the wine was disgorged already 5 years ago. The common wisdom says that the entry-level Champagnes (especially of larger houses) are best for immediate consumption and best drunk within a few years, but this wine shows that Lanson wines are obviously built for the long hauls, seeing how very youthful this wine still is. Most likely it will need another 10-15 years before reaching its apogee. Not perhaps the most complex or interesting Champagne out there, but definitely packs some great cellaring potential.

88-90 Hugely underrated and overlooked Champagne house. Higher dosage, but balanced with no MLF. A Champagne that would appeal to English Sparkling Wine fanatics.
Nosel - Rich, sweet red apples, cooked vanilla hint apples, big rich brioche smack.
Pal - Attack of sugar coated buttery red apple strudel. Rich texture, lemon skin, red apple skin, tension, hearty autolytic notes.
Fin - Bread, refreshing, bitter lemon, lacking a little oomph.

As many have commented here, this is quite a special champagne among the grandes marques with its big acidity and razorlike cut. For me the whole package works as there is also plenty of extract (in basic cuvee-terms). Aromatically this is mainly citrusfruit and some early whiffs of brioche. A very refreshing sip in the sunshine! While this bottle lacked complexity (it was degorged only in July 2018), I think one year of bottle age could well do the trick here - and also calm down the acidity a bit.

Today’s experience cements my opinion that this is the best value NV from any of the grands maisons. The wine has a very substantial backbone of citric acidity, but this never obscures or dampens its underlying richness. It also has a very classic, vinous champagne nose. Textbook stuff. Really enjoyable. For what it’s worth, this gave me more pleasure than the embryonic Dom 2008 I tried a fortnight ago. 90-91

A pleasant surprise with a lovely fine bead, pale colour and a fresh nose of lemon, red apples, white peaches and nougat, this wine is consistent with the quality of a recent bottle of Rose and suggests a quality jump in this cuvee. The palate is fresh and bright with a keen finish balancing the fruit characters. Pretty good all-rounder !
Found this on a shelf in Maui, the last bottle of it, too. What attracted me was the disgorge date of 12/2011. Lemon, honey, even a bit fleshy with some tropical tones. Finishes with a nice core of lime and saline. We paid $47 US for this and for being the loner bottle on the shelf, this was a steal. Probably doesn’t hurt too that it’s got some bottle age.

A reliably enjoyable Champagne that is modestly priced and fairly often is available at a well discounted price, making it a great drink anytime wine. Brightly acidic, partly because malolactic fermentation is not allowed. Has a good texture, partly because of extended lees contact. A good aging wine that becomes translucently yellow and increasing mouth coating, textured, rounded, and integrated.

Overpriced champagne. Medium bodied, rather dry, refreshing acidity and mousse, showing unfocused yellow fruit with vibrant toasty notes. It feels very ordinary. Many cavas are better and cheaper. From a piccolo at Ursula.
Disgorged 09/15. Crisp and light but still with substantial mouthfeel. Palate is dominated by candied stone fruit, lemon bar, and minerals. Toasted brioche and caramelized qualities are definitely starting to emerge given the age. Again one of the best in this price range.
As for my enthusiastic October note, except to add that both notes were of a Feb-2017 disgorgement. Lovely richness on the palate, somewhat complex, with fine bubbles, and a medium-bodied presence which is very moreish. Available locally for A$40 on special, which lifts it beyond anything else at that price by a degree of magnitude.

Disgorged in August 2015. The champagne was light gold in colour, with fine, medium-intense perlage. It offered citrus, stone fruit, apple, biscuit, brioche and smoke on the nose and palate, complemented by a smoky mineral finish, with creamy mousse, slightly tart medium-plus acidity and good length. The dry, medium-bodied, reasonably balanced champagne has benefited from additional time in bottle - an experience I often make with the Lanson Black Label: rather boring in its youth, but gaining depth as it ages.

Disgorged 11/2014. This champagne was pale straw in colour, with intense, fine perlage. It offered apple, stone fruit, toast, brioche, nuts, roasted almonds and a hint of smoke on the nose. On the palate the wine showed apple, lemon, stone fruit, nuts, brioche, toast, biscuit and some smoke, with creamy mousse, good, slightly tart acidity and good length. The appetizing, medium-bodied sparkling wine was reasonably balanced and reasonably integrated. I am usually not a fan of this bottling, but this bottle showed very well. The best bottle of Lanson Black Label I had to date. It obviously benefited from the extra time in the cellar.

Disgorged 09/2015 Clear, fine persistent bubbles continuing through the night. Colour was light golden with a very minute tinge of pink. Immediate sniff of Granny Smith apples upon opening with some lemon and lime. Would say a reasonably light bodied wine, with the apples and lemon continuing through the palate backed up with plenty of acidity. Bottle felt like it had some development (only slightly) but this can age a bit more for a number of years to give it more complexity. Finish was long. Will try another bottle next year to check on development.

Nice clean Champagne with decent acidity and enough complexity/creaminess to make it better than average in this price range. Bubbles faded relatively fast in the glass but still enjoyable. Less candied and more mineral driven than others in this range. Lemon bar, stone fruit, and dough. Disgorged 10/16

{cork} Current price $40. As good as ever; fresh, lively, not without interest; some depth of development. Fresh white fruit. Zippy acid, but still generous. Some autolysis character. Lanson's hard to beat for the price.

Winewankers BYO; 7/1/2017-7/2/2017 (Tores House): Degorged Nov 16. Light golden yellow. Nose with some spices and yellow ripe apples. Large and full mousse and a pleasant effervescence. Overweight of acid. Acidic apples and hung meat. Medium minus length.

Bought last year in London for 23€ on sale. Should have checked the disgorgement date, this Lanson tasted still very young. Lemon notes, some toast, lots of bubbles. Easy drinking and straight forward Champagne. For full price I would rather go for other Champagnes...

I saw that this had been disgorged 20 months ago (June 2015), so I thought I'd give it a go.
Apples dipped in honey. Nicely balanced and for a large brand, this has some personality. I wouldn't pay full price for this, but given that it's always on offer somewhere, I'm not sure that anyone ever does.
I think the disgorgement date is important and would encourage others to include it in their notes. 20 months post-disgorgement ageing makes a difference.

Disgorged in August 2015. The wine was light golden in colour, with fine, medium intense perlage. It offered lilac, apple, citrus, brioche, brown bread crust and some smoke on the nose, and apple, lemon, brown bread and smoke on the palate, with aggressive and slightly coarse mousse, medium-plus acidity and average length. This medium-bodied, medium-complex champagne finished with apple peel-like bitterness. I am not a fan of this bottling, but as always my wife liked it.

(Disgorged August 2014, purchased March 2015) Nose: Fresh, bread, dough, limestone and lemon fruit (86p). Taste: Rich mousse, big bubbles. Nice freshness/acidity, rich lime and lemon fruit, sweet & sour. Slight bitterness in the finish before a nice, citrusy aftertaste (87p). A good and reliable standard Champagne. After more than two years in the bottle this wine is still young and would probably have benefited from another 1-3 years in the bottle. Total score 87 points.

Lanson N.V., Watery pale golden. Medium+ open, Toast, candies nutty(almond), lesser bay leaves and more Citrus. Medium+ acidity, dry, mossy texture, fine bubbles, medium body, medium alcohol. bay leaves with lesser pop-corn and in a medium+ mineral finish. Chardonnay dominated, with some Pinot. No cheese flavor. Bay leaves, so possibly, aged for years. Calcium finish, so calcium soil. Relatively weaker intensity, so not a cru. Good balance, good length, okay intensity, okay complexity. A good wine. 88.

Pretty simple. Bought it marked down at 20 pounds, wouldn't pay any more than that and would expect a wine of this complexity at significantly less. Nose shows hints of pastry, biscuit notes, but its so light and before you know it its gone. Palate is a bit harsh, citrus dominates, lemon juice. Very unripe apple, pear. Tastes like a cremant that would sell for half the price.

Good pale gold colour, more characterful than most NVs. Almost no nose at all. Tastes fine, plentiful acidity, some biscuity notes. Not complex, not memorable, but perfectly clean and correct. Okay at reduced price. Disgorged June 2016. [Cork + cage; 12% abv; Scotmid (Co-op), on offer at £20]

Lanson Brut Black Lable, NV Champagne: Pale light golden, delicate bubbles. Delicate golden pineapple, candied, buttery(butterscotch) nutty and lesser cheese. Pineapple pie. Sharp medium+ acidity, dry, medium- body, medium+ alcohol, long calcium finish. Nutty and greenish bitterness on the palate, baked honey in the empty glass. Well balanced, good concentration and consistency, long length, okay complexity. Very good. Three-year old at least after bottling for the delicate fizzy, dry and high acid as a less sunny terroir, sharp acidity as no malolactic transfer, delicate baked pineapple and butterscotch as aged Chadonnay, calcium finish as limestone soil, cheese as lees contact. Simpler complexity as a entry level but very good wine from Champagne. Butterscotch and the ripe pineapple as an aged bottle (not from a good harvest in a warm year, as it is a NV). 88-89.

BHA Gala Dinner at the Kingsway Hall Hotel - limited note taking. Oh dear!! Clearly fresh stock. Edgy crunchy pineapple, very ripe with only the core acidity preventing this from drifting into the off-dry category. Thought it was cheap prosecco until I saw the label. I only hope that this improves with bottle age - very poor for champagne.

Have to say that most Lanson champagnes (NV & Vintage) leave me cold and in fact the brands they own (Tsarine & Besserat de Bellefon) usually produce much better wines at a cheaper price.
The Black Label NV is far from offensive but it doesn't have any real elegance, complexity or wow factor.
It has a nice straw colour with hints of amber, The nose is vibrant with hints of toast and flowers whilst the palate is dominated by citrus and ripe fruits. However, it does have a slightly curious and almost imperceptible vinegar like after taste.
Pretty decent plonk for a party but not one for even semi-serious champagne sippers. Decent but far from great.

Disgorged 11/2014. Nose shows stone fruit, cream and subtle lees. Palate is clean and precise, with refreshing acidity. The impressively small bubbles give an elegant mouthfeel. Not terribly powerful or complex, but a solid aperitif champagne.

Disgorged 07-2014. Drank over a couple of days (resealed with stopper and refrigerated). Very citric and intense on day one, mellowed nicely on day two. I believe a few years in a cellar could benefit this wine, despite it being a non-vintage blend.

Enofusión 2016; 1/25/2016-1/27/2016 (IFEMA - Madrid): Very earthy, sandy even mouth. Very glib . Chalk, some depth on the nose with notes of pastry or apricots. Lacks that wow factor which is essential in champagne.
Muy terrosa, arenosa incluso en boca. Muy facilona. Tiza en nariz con cierta profundidad con notas de pastelería o albaricoques. Carece de ese factor de admiración que es esencial en la Campaña.

Very reliable and tasty: the nose has good intensity and precision, with aromas of yeast, pastry, marzipan and vanilla. Some baked apples and ripe peach is also there. Good creaminess in the mouth, medium + acidity and medium + body. Flavours are intense and good and the fragrancy persists in the mouth in a satisfying medium-long finish. Over all a very good balanced champagne, expressive of its origin, quite complex and intense.

This wine would have been great on a summer day. Light and citrusy. This bottle was thing on bubbles, but could have been a bit past its prime when opened. The wine looks straw colored. The legs are fast. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like lemon, stoniness, cut green grass and verbena. It tastes like lemon. The body is light. The wine has narrow texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has low acidity.

Delicious fizz and with lots of yeasty and baked apple notes on the nose with a very defined and precise green and stone fruit palate with some brioche on the back palate. Definitely shows some good time on the lees, fantastic acidity and nice balance between fruit and secondary notes. This shows classic Champagne characteristics at a great price. Yum.

Light yellow color. Youthful closed on the nose at first. Very austere and acidic citrus palate. Lanson is always packed with a rough and hard acidic that takes a long time to smoother out.
I've had a Black Label with 20 years of extra cellaring that was very mature and with a much more smooth acidic and with butterscotch notes that felt really good! Probably best with 5-25 years of extra cellaring.

Nose of pear skin, almond paste, and yeasty bread. Bone dry but not at all austere, with citrus and stone fruit flavors in the mouth leading to a lingering, mineral finish. Drink now, although this could develop nicely with age.

Very good value for money at £23.99 14-June-2015 at the Co-operative, normal price £33.99. On opening one got a whiff of yeast from the compressed gas as the cork came out fortunately the yeast smell did not treasure to the glass. Slightly creamy on the plate and you get that sudden rush if freshness to the back of the mouth, its a citrus rush.

This was an NV with grapes from 1959/1960/1961. Still clinging on to dear life with even some bubbles. Nose of brioche, yeast. On the palate nuts, roast almonds, some honey, quince.
Chambolles and others at Mike and Cathy's: Served blind. Disgorged in February 2014. A lovely fresh, lively bouquet of citrus, green apples, wet granite and other minerals, with some leesy elements. In the mouth, a good dosage but with freshness and good acidity. Light on its feet and bright (perhaps due in part to the lack of malo, which Mike said was a house tradition) but moderately detailed and complex. Fairly long it finishes slightly bitterly, which I liked. Not a Champagne house I follow but excellent QPR. Mike bought a case at a per bottle price less than some NZ sparkling wines.

Tutti frutti, pears, honey pomelo, vanilla ice cream on the nose. Very fruit driven with a balanced acid and some good slight bitterness in the end. Honey pomelo, lime, wine gums and minerals in the background.

From a 750ml bottle purchased 3 years ago. Fresh and austere style of bubbly with lemon, fresh green apples and slate minerals on both nose and palate. Lanson's NV style needs 3-5 years of bottle age to grow into a pretty decent drop.

This was an old bottle of Lanson Brut Black Label. This bottle was disappointing. Almost Sherry and very much apple tones (too much). The taste was slightly better than the aroma. Other bottles from the same cellar (r de Ruinart, Louis Roederer), where much better.

A blend of Pinot Noir (50%), Chardonnay (35%) and Pinot Meunier (15%), no MLF. Aged for a minimum of 3 years before release.
Medium deep yellow color that is surprisingly deep for a Champagne that is supposed to be quite young. Initially the nose feels very reticent, but it opens up quite quickly and becoming surprisingly rich, expressive and autolytic; there are pronounced nutty and toasty aromas with some bruised apple notes and hints of warm rubber. There is also a delicate undercurrent of chocolate fudge. Just like the appearance, also the nose seems quite developed for the Lanson style! On the palate the wine feels more true to the steely Lanson style: the acidity cuts with piercing, laser-like focus and the mousse is really fine, but super-rich and prickly - almost aggressively so, with the sharp acidity. The flavor department is composed of lemony citrus notes, some green hints and a touch of almost unripe green apples, with a complex backdrop of autolytic nuttiness and spice and a touch of cool, refreshing minerality.
Surprisingly developed in style, not as one-dimensional and straightforward as the Black Labels I've had before; I wonder if this wasn't the most recent disgorgement, but instead an older bottle? The nose was really lovely, but on the palate the wine felt still too painfully young and almost aggressive. Not really enjoyable on its own, but instead a gastronomic food wine for sure. Definitely a wine that requires more age; I would recommend giving the wine at least 5 years, preferably 10, in a cellar before opening. This is not a drink-me-now and despite the lovely, somewhat developed, nutty nose, I wasn't that impressed; feels a bit overpriced at 42,40€.
Lanson: A Taste of Tradition (Vancouver, BC): Some richness on the nose showing toasty yeast, oxidized red apples, and tart lemon juice. Tons of fresh green apple on the palate along with plenty of sour lemon juice. Very dry, with mouth puckering acidity and a soft mousse. Medium length finish ending on notes of lemon and tart green apple. Rather simple and a bit dilute, with unbalanced overwhelming acidity. Not sure of the disgorgement date for this bottle, but this would benefit from some bottle age to smooth the edges. OK

I did not like the first two bottles. This was much better. It was light and crisp with strong tart apple meat, a little weak white mineral, and a nice and tasty finish. I am quite tired of bottle variation in many of the bubbles I have drunk over the last two years.

Interesting. I bought a 6 pack. The issue is that there is a lack of bottle consistency but this bottle was excellent. Aged taste with great straw color, brioche, tiny bubbles from the center rapidly moving to the top. Mousse mouth feel, creamy. Excellent.

What a pleasant champagne. Extremely active tiny bubbles with microscopic singular streams moving at rapid speed. Golden straw color. Nose of toast, butterscotch, cream, some vanilla. Crisp palate with pear nectar, caramel, creamy mousse with a truffle finish and some tartness on the tip and side of tongue and on the very rear of the palate. Lengthy dry chalk finish. Very surprised and impressed. Doesn't hurt I'm with my girlfriend listening to Johnny Mathis 50 Greatest Hits.

From 75cl. Much, much better than expected. I've had some pretty grim Grandes Marques of late, but this one actually tastes like Champagne made of decent quality pinot and chardonnay. Fine mousse, apple-cider entry, gentle sweetness balanced by crisp acidity. Delicious. 89P

An 80's bottle. Honeyed florality and golden apple nose with some shellfish, chalk and nutty toast. Dry and lightbodied palate with finely tuned moussé, rustic cider-like apple, mushroomy earth, wool, salt liquorice and nuts. Very nice aged charm here. So, Lanson seems to need time.

Always fresh and crisp; malic touches, but with some yeasty complexity, decently acidic, cuttingly lively. Moreish, with fine bubbles, dry but still with generosity of flavour. At two-thirds the price of Roederer's NV, this has long been my choice as the 'bargain grand marque' champagne.

Disgorged 07/2009. This has been in my cellar for two years, I was very interested to see how this lean tight champagne would respond. Very well indeed. The Lanson style remains - tight - citric - lemons, a balance of pinot and chardonnay aromas, and understated autolytic notes. The time in cellar has smoothed off any rough edges, and made this an utter delight if a tad on the simple side. Given the buff two years in the cellar has given this, I would have no issue with cellaring this for substantially longer.

The intense fruit reflects the dominance of pinot but grass and lime are not far behind thanks to the chardonnay. The wine is aged for at least three years, providing the loud atolytic notes of bread and rich mouthfeel. To their credit, there is no malolactic creaminess, just clear cut acidity. You will need a soft creamy cheese or sauce to handle it, but once paired, the intense fruit, yeast and rustic aged notes will stand firm against most dishes. Champagne is a remarkably uniform genre of wine when it comes to quality; check out the average CT scores for the NV offerings from the main marques. To some degree the styles of these producers are also pretty uniform, with some variations. I think the Black Label is a variation on the plus side; creamier and lusher than many, orchard fruit, zest.

Citrus, green apple and yeast on the nose. Strong acidity, would definitely benefit from cellaring. Medium bodied, good balance and very fruit forward. I like brioche in my Champagne but can definitely appreciate this style as well. Long finish. Would work well as an aperitif. At this point this is too acidic to bring pleasure for the whole 40 € this costs here but it would be interesting to taste this after a year or two or cellaring.

Everything I expect from a NV champagne but not worth more than 84 points (let's not go over the top and move it to the "Very Good to Excellent" category). Plenty of fizz, liveliness and bubbles that last until the end. Citrus with an after taste that is pleasant. Should I be looking for anything more from an ordinary champagne other than a festive drink that complements the occasion?

Bought to take to dinner with friends. Remind me not to bother saving a few bucks on this when the Duval-Leroy and Charles Heidsieck NVs are significantly better wines for not much more money. Clear. Pale lemon-green colour with medium mousse and long and beuatiful persistence. Light youthful aromas of green fruit – notably apple – combined with pronounced autolytic aromas, which opened up after some time in the glass and started to dominate the nose. Surprisingly low acidity and only mediumbody. Mousse was creamy in the mouse though. Medium intensity autolytic – notably toast and yeast - and apple fruit character of the flavour. Sorry to say, my expectations were higher - this has only acceptable quality, since low acidity and body made this wine quite unexciting even cloying at some point. Undistinctive aftertaste also contributed to the „acceptable” quality evaluation. At peak, should be drunk soon. Thank good, it was discounted from the regular price, otherwise, no need to spend this much money on a mediocre mass champagne.

Pours a beautiful golden color. Aromas of citrus and tropicals. Medium body with good acidic balance. Flavors of citrus fruit nectar, wild apples, and stonefruit. The finish is mild and savory. This is a very approachable Champagne that meets the expectations of any Champagne drinker.

Super charged bubbles, like a jet stream shooting up from the bottom of the glass. Pale straw colour. Citrus notes and yeast on the nose with a fruit forward palate and high acidity. The finish is crisp and clean.

Brought as a gift by a friend, we opened this several hours into a party. I always find this far too tart and austere - fine for mixing, although cava is better value, even with the recent supermarket discounts. Not great.

Pale yellow with aromas of green apple, citrus and yeast. Palate isn't too complex but it's very refreshing and light with more apple, hints of toast and plenty of acidity. Finish is creamy and smooth. Lovely.

I liked this one though it had strong flavours of rotten apples, or cider to be more exact. But the flavours were balanced, the finish was good and dry. Certainly a bit different for the money but not my preferred style.

This bottle lacked the vitality and freshness on the nose that was enjoyed in the last bottle that we had at the Cullen and Moss Wood tasting. The nose is soft and gives off scents of yeast and some apple. The palate is crisp, light and driven by acid.

Mid colour; still very young judging by the flared cork. Highish acidity, still quite unevolved, little interest. Best left for a year or two. From the recent UK ASDA-deal batch. Significantly improved by second day, but still needs a year or two bottle age.

Cullen DM vs Moss Wood Cabernet vertical (Sydney, Australia): The nose is fresh and lively with aromas of apples and a touch of toast. The palate doesn't have a great deal of depth, but it is very refreshing which is the whole point of this wine. Good value for money in the Champagne stakes.

Gold, lively mousse; green apples, lemons, yeast, slight minerality; dry, toasty, crisp acidity, lemony finish. This champagne really smoothed out over dinner, developing toasty flavours balanced by the citrusy acidity. Went nicely with smoked salmon. Good QPR @ $44.95.

Winestar Lanson Champagne Dinner: Light straw-yellow. Very fresh, apples dominating the nose with a bit of citrus and a mere touch of yeast in the background. A creamy palate with some hazelnut influences. Easy to drink and good value for money.

On first night didn't rate this (79), but admittedly the glasses we had were very narrow and constrained the bouquet terribly (or perhaps it really was that bland the on initial opening?); overly acidic, little depth or body. Seemed like it needed a lot longer in the cellar. Kate liked it though. On second night in better glasses it had really opened up. Due to the glasses or due to having been open overnight? Rounded, creamy, light, lots of bubbles.

Brilliant, pale yellow with brisk tiny bead. Intense green apple and lemon nose, with a hint of yeastiness. Light to medium bodied, with tart green apple and lemon on palate. Long, tart finish. Quite drinkable and pleasant, although clearly lacking the depth and complexity of a vintage Champagne.

Very young expression, fresh, rather austere dry finish.
Sometimes hints of yeast and sweetness but killed off by bitter finish.
Slightly vegetal, metallic smell, acidity but no fruit or something else to balance it out.
Lets see how it develops with a bit aeration...
More lemon, subtle hints of caramel once in a while and the bitterness is slowly fading a bit.
Still very young
Second day, ultra fresh lemon lime zesty kick
quite intense and long aftertaste.
Very good quality until here just too young for me.
Third day, now even nice sweet sour apple lime interplay on the finish, good!
But really really difficult to imagine opened freshly as an aperitif even though this is probably how its mostly used.
Will age like a charm.

Retail $38. 50% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier.

50% grand + premier cru; 50% pinot noir, 35% chardonnay, 15% meunier; based on the 2015 harvest, 35% reserve wines, 8g/l dosage, disgorged Nov 2019. [Cork + cage; 12.5% abv; Scotmid (Co-op), -£10 @£25].

Golden yellow colour.

Clear, fine persistent bubbles continuing through the night.

Nose: Fresh, bread, dough, limestone and lemon fruit (86p).

Oh dear!! Clearly fresh stock. Edgy crunchy pineapple, very ripe with only the core acidity preventing this from drifting into the off-dry category. Thought it was cheap prosecco until I saw the label.

I've had a Black Label with 20 years of extra cellaring that was very mature and with a much more smooth acidic and with butterscotch notes that felt really good! Probably best with 5-25 years of extra cellaring.

Light on its feet and bright (perhaps due in part to the lack of malo, which Mike said was a house tradition) but moderately detailed and complex. This was an old bottle of Lanson Brut Black Label. This bottle was disappointing. Almost Sherry and very much apple tones (too much). The taste was slightly better than the aroma. Other bottles from the same cellar (r de Ruinart, Louis Roederer), where much better.

Crisp green apple, mineral, with a background pear note in the midpalate, incredible length for a basic wine, it even seems to build on the finish and the flavor linger and lingers.

I like brioche in my Champagne but can definitely appreciate this style as well. Long finish. Would work well as an aperitif. At this point this is too acidic to bring pleasure for the whole 40 € this costs here but it would be interesting to taste this after a year or two or cellaring.

Light lemon in colour this Champagne had apple and citrus notes on the nose. The palate was well balanced- vanilla, lemon and a slight creamyness.

Fresh and some light yeastyness. Nice, not as acidic as some bottles of this.

Lovely.

Better than the one last week. Yeasty champagne - nice (hint of marmite on the nose!).

Six months storage in the dining room has improved this quite a bit - a bit of biscuit now and rounded off some of that initial sharp acidity.

I liked this one though it had strong flavours of rotten apples, or cider to be more exact. But the flavours were balanced, the finish was good and dry. Certainly a bit different for the money but not my preferred style.

Sharp painful acid levels. This needs a couple of years to soften and will then merit a higher rating no doubt.

About 60% Chard and 40% Pinot. Smooth with dough and peach notes. Tasted a little flat on the finish but still very nice. 87.

With K at dinner at Silks (SF) on my 31st birthday. Gold-colored, nice bead. Fresh, fruity nose. On the palate, very dry and frothy, with good flavor. 5-9-15-6: 85/100.
