Community Tasting Notes (140) Avg Score: 93.6 points

  • Initial aromas of earth and undergrowth and game. Mellows out to leather and herbs. Rich and luscious mouth feel, with loads of black pepper bite at the end. Alcohol is apparent, but in nice tension with the bright acidity and smooth but grippy tannins. It's a big wine, but not a bruiser or even overtly fruity. Actually feels pretty restrained. There's blackberry and boysenberry on the palate, and some dried plum. Herbs and roasted meats. Bit of flint and graphite. Prominent garrigue - rosemary and juniper. There's fruit but it's secondary to the earthy, savory, herbaceous notes. Delicious stuff. Had it with bavette and bearnaise, duck fat roasted potatoes with rosemary, and an arugula salad with anchovy vinaigrette. Wonderful!

  • WCC Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blind Dinner (The Chef's Table in Café Capriccio, Albany, NY): [Double-decanted around noon. Bottle left uncorked until 4:30 pm.] Muted nose of red fruit and spice. Long finish of red fruit, but again the acid is a bit high for my taste.

  • Ripe, sweet, hints of dark chocolate.

  • Ruby red in color. 15.5% ABV. Sublime nose of red and black fruits, roasted herbs, garrigue and blood. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Rich and concentrated with notable balance. Black raspberry, kirsch liqueur and Herbes de Provence. Exceptional length on the finish. Clearly modern in style but not at all over the top. Everything works in harmony here and the wine could not be more appealing. Best over the next 4-6 years.

  • Less convincing than my last bottle. Long finish and high (15,5%), well integrated alcohol, but nevertheless noticeable in the finish, in particular in the beginning and on day 2. Still a modern, but very good wine and difficult to pair (different cheeses did not really match well). 91-92

  • Charming and full bodied wine in a wonderful spot right now. Deep dark color, complex nose. Raspberry, blueberry, black currant, chocolate, spices, vanilla. Silky texture. Long finish with smooth tannins. Less impressive on day two. Therefore I would recommend to drink up within the next 1 or 2 years.

  • With a decade gone by since our last bottle, you would expect the tannins to have dramatically softened if not disappeared outright, and that's taken place here. Pop and pour into a decanter and consumed over two hours. In the glass, still looking relatively youthful, with no signs of aging at the rim. On the nose, still exuberant raspberry liqueur. On the palate, soft yet supple, leaning into the raspberry notes, along with some notes of port and a touch of molasses, leading to a smooth, round finish. I was hoping for more of the aromatic fireworks that CdP can deliver over time, but given the absence of tannins at this point, I'm leaning towards drink now.

  • Jammy over ripe and lacking character.

  • Just cracked and desperately needs a decant. Red raspberry, plum, dried herbs and blood orange. Less fleshy and more depth. Leather and earth, touch of funk that I’m hoping blows off with a decant. Espresso? Really shined after a decant and paired with French food.

  • Dark red, nearly opaque, garrigue-y nose, medium-bodied. Heady aromas of woodsy brambly fruit, although the fruit is largely gone with considerable heat remaining. [it is 15.5% after all]. We have another 4 bottles remaining, and there is no reason to delay drinking them.

  • Ouille, aïe, ouille!!! C'est EXCELLENT. 93,5 mais les 94 arrivent à grands pas.

  • Dark ruby, heady nose of blackberry, garrigue, and ample mouthfeel, surprisingly graceful for a wine with ~15% alcohol (although that was the style then). Tasted in conjunction with Charvin CdP, same vintage, at a send-off dinner for friends who were departing on a trip to France. The Chaupin had more fruit and was more elegant (not a surprise), and the Charvin was more savory and equally delicious.

  • Still too young and a disturbingly high alcohol. Had it at a tasting and others liked it much more then I did.

  • From Mag…..it’s ripe and modern, but really delicious, spicy, complex fruited CdP. Hit the spot for me….and everyone in my party. You can debate a point or two up or down but there’s no denying it’s a tasty well made wine

  • Significantly better showing from this bottle than past bottles. No longer a little hot or fume-y, the Chaupin has calmed down and displays richer fruit with silky layers of classic CdP flavors. Truly delicious now and clearly in the window.

Still have half the bottle left for tonight and will update the note if warranted.

Paired with sesame and garlic seared bavette steak.

  • Garnet. First a bit closed. After decant delivering raspberries, cherries, blackberries, spices. On the palate an iron fist, but not in a velvet glove. Still tannic with some bitter notes and high alcohol that is hidden to some extent. But if you pair this with food, you feel the burning high alcohol and tannin levels. This is not elegant or light on its feet and more impressive than enjoyable and I doubt that time will turn this into something that really could make me having fun. 5/12/17/9 -2025 98 points from Parker in 2011, 92-94 from cask and 96 in 2019 from Czerwinski for the WA. I agree with the score from cask.

  • No question it’s a modern styled CdP, and it that turns you off deduct a couple points, but it delivers beautifully on what it’s supposed to be which is an opulent, forward, spicy wine with good detail. It’s not my optimal style but there are certainly times I’m in the mood for this and when I am it’s excellent. Poured from mag, there was no sensation of heat which others have noted

  • CDP Corona Tasting...gotta love it!: This wine was double decanted to get rid of sediment, poured into small jars around 4 pm, transported to individuals for the tasting, poured into glasses and tasted at 6:30 pm, tasted over the course of 2 hours. The wines were tasted single blind (we knew what all the wines were, but not which one we were tasting). The wines in this tasting were as follows:

    1. 1998 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau
    2. 2000 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée
    3. 2009 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin
    4. 2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
    5. 2003 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape

The group's top 2 (which received almost all 1st or 2nd place votes) were the 2003 Clos des Papes (Number 1) and the 2000 Pegau (Number 2). My order was as follows: (1) 2000 Pegau, (2) 2003 Clos des Papes, (3) 2009 Janesse, (4) 2007 Beaucastel, and (5) 1998 Telegraphe. As a side note, my number 5 did not end up there because it was a bad, on the contrary, it was good, just happened to like the other wines better!

2009 Janasse - Very surprising...this wine was well integrated and did not come across as such a young wine. A modern styled wine, but well integrated fruit, tannin and acidity. I was pleasantly surprised by the balance of this wine, and it was my #3 wine (behind an excellent Pegau and Clos des Papes). The nose was slightly floral and jammy, with hints of meat and some spice. On the palate, cherry, plum and cassis were dominant, with smoked beef and some herbs on the palate. Notes of alcohol would come through on some sips (but not others). Overall, a very enjoyable wine that finished in the middle of the pack of a very good group! Solid 93.

  • Single-blind Chateauneuf du Pape (Everyone's House): Single blind covid-style, so each wine delivered in a small jar. This was the more modern wine at the tasting. Orange peel, red raspberry, vanilla oak. The texture is softer, probably from the oak. This is slightly hedonistic but I can dig it. It also began to get alcoholic after about 1.5 hours. 93 points initially, probably 90-91 at the last sip.

  • Virtual Single Blind CdP Tasting (Home): Very dark red color, no margin. Splash double decanted and poured into vessels two hours before pouring. Drank a glass single blind over 3 hours. Ripe and modern styled, bright fruit, deep raspberry, a little green edge, wood, more tannins, and there is heat on the back end. As others noted, this was at its best on first pouring, but seemed to fall off over the first hour. This had less CdP character. Not much doubt this was the Janasse. 91pts at peak.

  • The wine looks garnet colored. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis) and red currant. It tastes like blackberry, red currant and black currant (cassis). The body is full. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity.

  • I've followed this wine since release, and tonight it is easily in its finest form. The 2009 Janasse Chaupin delivered an intense yet still fresh expression on the nose, showing crushed raspberry, and blueberry, with plum sauce, lifted by a mix of smoky minerals, air-dried meat, violet florals, and a dusting of sweet spice. On the palate, velvety textures were energized by vibrant acidity, as juicy, ripe red and blue fruits flooded the senses, offset by saline-minerality and hints of spice. The finish was long yet fresh, resonating on notes of sweet plums, black cherry, hints of sweet spice and tannin, without the slightest hint of heat. Such an amazing wine, hedonistic to a degree, yet so balanced.

  • Delicious bottle of wine. On the hedonistic, sweeter, modern style of CDP. Gained complexity with a short decant but really good right after opening as well.

  • relatively closed nose, that reluctantly yielded a paucity of black fruit, black tea, and some leather/tobacco complexity - somewhat lean mouth with moderate blackberry fruit and earthy flavors but very good acid-tannin balance - medium body - short hot finish - this bottle was not showing very well tonight, but probably needs more time - in reading the other tasting notes, it appears there is considerable bottle variation in this wine, with some notes like mine, and others showing full maturity and considerable complexity development - if you have more than one bottle, would suggest you try one soon to determine where your lot stands on this broad spectrum

  • Pretty flavors and nice delineation but smells and tastes a bit hot. Comes across as higher alcohol than I would have expected - not as polished as other Janasse I've had. Still quite enjoyable but this holds it back from a higher score. Nose is typical cdp with significant fruit and the palate is consistent. Enjoyable overall but not a top tier CdP.

Decanted 75 mins at cellar temp and then served over a few hours.

  • Nose of black fruits, vanilla which was jammy and deepset. Tasted ripe plums, raisins, with espresso, Christmas fruit cake and creme tertiaries. Finish was warm and bitter at the end. Alcohol is still rather forward. This is still young for me. However, the foundations are there. Keep 3-5 years more.

  • The nose was by far the best part of this wine, really intoxicating in itself but:
Day 1: really tight and closes up fast not quite allowing the fruit to totally show itself. Not excessive tannins but a smokey finish that just doesn't allow the fruit to shine. Feel that it just straddling the line on overripe here but the tannin/smoke hold it.
Day 2: 24 hrs later wine is open, but has revealed the ripe and for me Prune fruit too much now. Certainly a nice wine but not my favorite cup by far, maybe a product of the vintage. Id say it needs somewhere more than 3 hrs but less than 24hr decant. Id leave it open on the counter for 8hrs on a next bottle.

  • Popped this open and let it decant for a couple hours and have to agree with other posts about the opulent nose. An absolute joy to swirl and sniff, the perfume in the glass reminded me of that one girl you dated (or wanted to date) years ago whose come-hither scent put you in a trance for however long you were in her presence. The wine was less exhilarating on the palate, although still a pleasurable bouquet of dark fruits and kirsch. I was left wanting more, and perhaps it was because we had popped open a bottle of 10 Mon Aieul the weekend before and absolutely loved that bottle of wine, so I might not be fair here but a wine of this pedigree should have more depth to it IMO.

  • Disappointing. The front had some nice cherry and raspberry fruit, and the tannins and alcohol seemed to be in balance. The finish, however, was overly sweet, almost spoiled. I'll recork and put in the refrigerator overnight, but at this point the bottle may be poured out. It's my fourth bottle of this and while the others have been good, none have come close to the scores/notes of other CT users.

  • PnP. Fantastic nose, Janasse Chaupin easily has the best nose of all CDP wines tasted. Floral and intense, on your face type. Peppery and spicy on the attack, plenty of tannins but not obtrusive. Vibrant acidity. Long and slightly hot finish with ABV labeled at 15.5% (ouch!) but likely higher. Certainly not for a typical Burgundy or Riesling drinker but would be perfect for someone drinking a lot of hard liquors. This would be a good wine to precede Kinmen Kaoliang! Better at the beginning with the nose (at least 95 pts) but sadly letdown by heat at finish (88 pts). I actually got a bit tipsy after two glasses of the wine, pretty certain the alcohol level is much higher than 15.5%.

  • Not my style at all! Can understand the high ratings but not to my taste. An SUV of a wine with very thick ripe fruit and unctuous chocolatey aromas, likewise mouth coating with no electricity

  • Medium-dark garnet, opaque. Moderately pronounced sweet black cherry and plum aromas with some toasty oak. Round black fruit flavors, some anise and tobacco, viscous, with moderate but soft tannins, high acidity and alcohol. Rich, lengthy aftertaste with some heat. Very enjoyable, opened significantly after a couple of hours, may soften further in a couple more years.

  • Fantastic showing! As always beautiful nose with cherry fruits & almonds, palate medium to full bodied, fine, no noticeable tannins any more, slightly sweet in the aftertaste. Drank it before and with dinner. What a treat!

I don't agree with other tasters that this wine is too young and some more years are required to fully enjoy this wine. It is perfect at present!

  • Dichtes, lebendiges Rubin. Geil!

  • Dark garnet, totally opaque. Somewhat reserved nose, all black fruits, dark and brooding. Dusty, earthy, mushrooms, one-dimensional. Big on the palate, all dark fruits, coarse and rustic, a bit austere and dry. Went very well with strip steak. Medium-long, somewhat hot aftertaste. Not a sipping wine, but a good match for full-flavored foods like steak. This could gain something with time, maybe a year or so.

  • Tuesday Night Double Blind $80+ (Bin 75): Dark crimson core with reddish rim; creamy, dark fruit, plum, raspberry, fig and almond paste; spicy palate, strong bitterness, grainy Grenache tannin, a touch of heat, creamy, briary, the finish is austere but the front end is more modern; very different from the last bottle just over 1 month ago, this was evolving at a much quicker pace and didn't have much potential to improve in the cellar except for texture; called '09 Clos des Papes.

  • This wine would have needed a long decanting but we, unfortunately, had to just pop and pour. A big, dark, full-bodied wine with loads of dark fruit and a long finish. Rather high level of alcohol (15,5%) which also shows. Needs time and probably will get a much higher rating in 5-10 years.

  • Dark red; nose of dark red fruit and licorice; requires air! at least an hour in the decanter; soft and smooth silky attack, licorice and chocolate, some tannins, unfolding quite a bit as time goes by; tannins biting a bit but otherwise quite nice, lots of fruit, much better than three years ago; guess prime will be some years ahead (wife liked it a lot!)

  • Opened and enjoyed over 3 hours on night one and enjoyed the last 1 1/2 glasses the next evening after pumping out the air.

I agree with the comments by Christoffer78 but mine showed notes of slate intermixed in there and didn't show as elegant as he mentioned. My bottle took a while to come together and seemed at its best the next day or late on day 1. Don't get me wrong, at this stage this wine is really good but not as amazing as the '07 I had last year.

  • As stunning as always, the 2009 Chaupin once again delivers one of those magical moments tonight. This wine is one of those which plays more on its elegance than power. At first impression it appears a bit light, but when served to food it develops into a complex and meticulously crafted effort. The nose offers up an abundance of dark mature fruit, Grenache kirsch, thyme, sage, rosemary and wet saddle leather. There is a lot of primary fruit left, but the wine first comes across as a bit muted. It needs a while to open up fully and start singing. The palate is perfectly balanced with no hard edges. As I have written before, ”if velvet ever was liquid this is what it would be like”. The integration is absolutely profound as is the balance. The length on the finish lasts about a minute or more. This wine will most likely evolve into something even more amazing provided you can let any bottles rest in the cellar, which I know is pretty hard. A total stunner!

  • Enticing bouquet of blueberry, dark fruits. Really started to come together with blend of dark fruit and soft tannins after 3 hours of decanting. Still youthful. Will wait a few years on my other bottle.

  • Have not opened one for a while after busy drinking Burgs and Bordeaux recently. Good nose but not as aromatics as previous bottles. Good acidity level. Plenty of alcohol with slight heat at finish. Never match the "joy" experienced previously. Not fully shut down but neither is it ready. Good but not great category.

    SUPERBE!

  • Decanted for about 2 hours but still the wine did not really open up. Our expectations were high after reading so many highly positive reviews of the wine. Our bottle did not meet these expectations. The wine is, however, still very young. I will wait another 2-3 years before opening the next bottle (and hope for the best).

  • Dinner at Philipp’s place: Had this wine with assorted french cheese. A perfect fit.

However, I would not serve it to a meat based main dish as it might not have the power for it (too sweet).

For me this wine is not closing down at all. Showing as much floral notes and expression in the nose as the last bottles I had this spring and summer.

  • Great nose. White pepper and lots of fruit. Taste is awsome. Feels like velvet and silk. Lots of fruit and smooth tannins.

  • An absolutely stunning effort, the 2009 Chaupin delivers one of those magical moments tonight. This wine is one of those which plays more on its elegance than power and which you at first think is a bit light on its feet, but then you realize that it is a complex and meticulously crafted effort with a log to give! The nose offers up an abundance of dark mature fruit, Grenache kirsch and heather and beautiful white flowers. The -09 Chaupin still has a lot of the primary fruit left. However, at first sniff it was actually quite a bit muted. It took some 45 minutes in the glass for it to really open up. The palate is perfectly balanced with no hard edges - if velvet ever was liquid this is what it would be like. The length on the finish lasts about 50 seconds up to a minutes but the memory imprint of this wine lasts for years. A super effort from one of the star producers in this appellation! A must buy for the Chateauneuf lover.

  • I have nothing more incisive or intelligent to say than what most people have already said. Ready to drink now, and I really appreciate everyone who left the note that you should just inhale the aroma for a while before tasting. That was sheer pleasure.

  • Richer than the regular release, still needs some time to settle the tannins, a bit alcoholic but the fruit is there to back it up...I'd leave the rest a few more years.

  • After having a 1998 Canon La Gaffeliere and a 2003 Leoville Barton, we opened the third bottle: A Janasse Chaupin 2009. The first comment was: "Why do we open such a young wine after having two nice medium ole Bordeauxs?".

But after smelling and drinking the wine everyone did know why. Beautiful Janasse nose, consistent taste and smell as previous bottles and much appreciated by everyone. Funny that none of the drinkers did know Janasse before. To all of us this was the perfect wine to celebrate into my birthday (before drinking the Champagne, of course). :-)

  • I would agree with _xenon that this bottle had that wonderful Janasse nose that you could sniff all night! This is a slightly less bold offering that normal Janasse's I have had but I really enjoyed the rich flavors with the velvety texture. The mouth was flavorful and powerful at the same time all keeping the smoothness. I really enjoyed this knockout bottle. Drink now to 2020.

  • A bit ligther and more feminine than the previous wine, nose of roasted meat, oriental spices, ripe red cherries, ... taste of dark sweet cherries, , very elegant wines... this wine is very similar in style as the Mon Aieul...

  • Drank over 2 days. Elegant although high level of alcohol. Very fruity (alsmost sweet), typical Janasse nose. Did not get better on day 2.

  • I do not agree to the previous tasting note. This wine is not about cellaring for years and decanting for hours. That’s what Bordeaux is for. Or the year 2010 in the southern Rhone valley.

After opening and pouring the wine into the decanter, the nose immediately pops to your brain, this wine is ready to drink and all about an expressive sweet berry nose, which (to me) is very addictive. I usually decant this wine for an hour. The palate is about elegance, finesse and silk. It does not have a huge big body, but (as I can promise you based on personal experience) the bottle will always be emptied, with or without food. I would always recognize this wine among hundreds of others as it is so different to them, yet a typical Janasse wine. The high alcohol level is not dominant at all.

The 2010 Chaupin is different, needs some more time to develop and way more air to breath before being enjoyable. The nose is less expressive, however, the body is bigger and consists of more structure. But the 2009 Chaupin is a high end pnp wine.

I prefer the 2009. Again, I am talking about comparing a Porsche to a Jaguar.

I enjoyed this wine at home with antipasti. I am glad to have some more in my cellar.

  • Decanted for 2.5 hours before service, but it really didn't make it out of primary mode until 4.5 hours. In the glass, clear dark red with a very slight pink tint. On the nose, a mixture of rose petals and crushed raspberry. On the palate, two different impressions...at first, raspberry liqueur followed immediately by a brutally tannic finish, but over the two hours spent at the table, the tannins softened and secondary notes of minerality and herbs began to poke through. If you're able to give this at least a four-hour decant now, it can be consumed with pleasure, but a better strategy would be to tuck it away for 5-8 years and forget about it.

  • Alcohol :: 15.5%
Purplish red. Opened for 8hrs and decanted for 3hrs. Very sweet core of sweet dark fruits, high tones spices, lavender scents and blueberry notes. So powerful, high tone yet so focus. Full bodied, this is so dense with sweet dark fruits and spices yet remain so fresh, mineral driven on the palate. Sweet fig paste, inner floral scents that floating around to palate with care. Tannin is powerful but very fine. The finished is long, fine, pure and loaded with fresh mineral that giving so much freshness and finesse. 15.5% alcohol is well concealed, too. Amazing. 93-95

  • Fabulous wine. I have to agree to Cesar that this one is more open compared to the 2010. Where the VV is more masculine (which, compared to Bordeaux might not be the correct expression), the 2009 Chaupin is more on the feminine side. It has this typical intoxicating Janasse nose (did I mention that you have this typical nose in all high end Janasse wines down to the 2010 Terre D’argile?). Can be enjoyed with or without food. Whereas I sometimes tend to prefer the VV, my spouse simply adores this wine, especial the nose. It’s really hard to beat. You could sit there for hours and just smell the nose. Wine was decanted for almost an hour.

It is even a pleaser. When presenting this wine, you don’t have to tell a story, you could just say 'smell and enjoy'.

After drinking I was lucky to find a wine dealer, who still has some bottles left. I bought 6 more for 59 €.

I have the 2010 VV in my cellar, but don't dare to open it now. Is it too early or can it be enjoyed already now?

  • La Janasse at The Oxford Wine Circle (Oxford University): This is fat, full bodied and extremelly flavorfull. Extremelly well organised and present, it's totally ongoing and easier to get through than the 2010. A beautiful expression of Grenache, this Chaupin 2009 represents a trendemous value for what it's currently being sold for -around 55€- and, as its big brother Vieilles Vignes 2009, is wildly open for business: I would have NO regrets drinking this mostly at this age.

  • This was really nice. Quite elegant and floral with less structure than the VV. Still some serious tannins at this point, but approachable. 100% Grenache shines through with more purity than VV. But a beautiful wine with a very long finish. Great!

  • Another Blind Sunday in the Sunroom (Chez S1): So modern, so young, so tight, what was I thinking? Even so it really shows bright sweet red fruited Grenache with a big spicy pepper quality. This one shows loads of wild fennel. The complex spice notes finish for nearly a minute. Once the spiky flavors integrate this will be a blockbuster.

  • The nose was elegant yet with razor sharp intensity, giving aromas of crushed blackberry, currants, dark chocolate, pencil led and sweet exotic spices, which filled the senses. On the palate, it was like velvet but with an acid profile that kept it lively and fresh as flavors of raspberry, black cherry liquor, licorice and herbs flowed into the long finish, which saturated the palate with dark berries, peppery spice, and hints of tannin.

  • Blackberry jam, herbs, underbrush, meat, licorice, and a little tar on the focused nose. Blackberry, black cherry, tart cherry, licorice, meat, blood, and herbs on the palate. Amazingly long finish of herbs and blood (kind of reminds me of having a bloody nose). Dense texture, huge palate, but still delicious and not too heavy. Perfect acidity to balance the weight of the wine and the sweetness of the fruit. Shifts and changes and shows additional complexity as it sits. Wow.

  • First time tasted a Janasse Chaupin, I had Janasse VV 2001 about one month back. When the Sommelier poured the wine for me to taste, my first impression after a sniff was how floral and forward the nose was. Wow! it just hit me on the face. Notes of flora, black berry and licorice with no hint of oak. Full-bodied with sweet and silky tannins. High alcohol of 15% but I did not feel the heat. Multi-layered and long finished, this wine will last for a while. This was better than the 2001 Janasse VV and significantly better than the 2009 Pegau Cuvee Reservee I had last week. One of the best GSM/Grenache I had in a while. Great that I bought both the 2009 and 2010 Chaupin. 96-97 pts.

  • Yowzers is this good! Beautful fruit filled nose with maybe just a touch of VA and a somewhat alcoholic nose upon first opening. That alcohol on the nose blew off the longer and longer it was open. Or perhaps I was just getting drunker and drunker. In the mouth a great combination of strawberry, raspberry, and herbs dominate this both in the nose as well as in the mouth. A nice structure of tannin on the back end tell me this will only get better. Loved this wine last night.

  • Powerful somewhat alcoholic nose with some nice spicy components. On the palate a little woody but rich and mouth filling. Good fruit characteristics, but a little modern for my liking.

  • It is probably almost as good as the 07 after 3 years, it will be hard to keep hands off for another 2-3 years. Rich and fairly smooth with a acidic, alcohol and peppery kick in the after taste, which is long and wonderful. Some tastes of brambles, not that I have had them, but a different berry taste.

  • A superb wine, surprisingly generous from a vintage somewhat eclipsed by the 2010's that follow, and certainly not near the stellar heights of the great 2007's in the southern Rhone. A remarkable lack of objectionable tannin makes this thoroughly accessible now, though it will obviously become something even more interesting in a decade or two. Very smooth, robust and beautifully crafted. Distinct notes of smoked meat, leather, pepper and spice overlay an elusive ripe cherry component that at times recedes to the background, at others comes to the fore. Beautifully full-bodied, an ample structure that will delight for many years to come. Superb.

  • I had a bottle of Janasse Vieilles Vignes 09 a couple of months ago and surprisingly enough (to me) that bottle was so much more ready to drink today. The Chaupin is way to young to drink today. Opened it up two days ago and it was not a pleasent wine to drink at first. After 2-3 hours it started to mellow down to something that was OK to drink. I put the cork back in and opened it up again today, nice! Today it shows so much more complexity with much nicer fruit. Today 93p with potential for higher points with some more age .

  • This wine, although very young, already displayed a loving aromas with little complexity. Totally with previous tasting note that it is like 'strawberries, mature dark fruit, garrigue, herbs, a slight touch of bacon and smoked ham combined with lovely wet saddle leather'. Although quite good to be taste now.

  • A beautiful effort pairing extremely well to involitini a la milanese. This is a profound effort singing so loudly of Grenache I am just thrilled and amazed. The nose is full of Grenache kirch, dark mature fruits, thyme, sage, rosemary and a lovely tone of luxurious oak and wet saddle leather. This effort needs to rest to gain more complexity, right now all the components are in place but they need to get some age. Still there is a lot of elegance and I would say a lot of subtlety. This wine will most likely evolve into something even more amazing provided you can let any bottles rest in the cellar - which I guess will be pretty hard. (score is 96-97)

  • The 2009 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin has a nose elegantly expressing strawberries, mature dark fruit, garrigue, herbs, a slight touch of bacon and smoked ham combined with lovely wet saddle leather. The palate is full-bodied with just a very vague hint of residual sweetness. Tannins and acidity are perfectly integrated. Integration is the keyword for this effort, it is an elegant wine with plenty of subtle power lingering in the background. Time will provide even more complexity. Go grab a bottle or two if you see this. You will not be disappointed. (score is 96-97) (Tasted alongside the 09 Vieilles Vignes, the Chaupin is a bit more elegant, more subtle and just 100 percent of everything, while the Vieilles Vignes is even more...)

  • A baby full of tannins and acidity. Immediately, it is “cellaring” that comes to my mind. From nose to palate, it is full of blueberries and ‘herbes de provence’. The wine is extremely concentrated, like a bomb asking to explode; however, it is not ready. The minesweeper -the taster- should drink this either now to take advantage of the primary aromas displayed as soon as the bottle is popped or in a few years when the tannins will be softened and the orchestra of aromas organized. As for all the Chateauneuf-du-Pape from La Janasse in 2009, rococo defines the Chaupin 2009: this is a unique feature across the board of the last decade’s vintages.

    98+/100
