David’s 1999 Cote de Nuits (Lorne, London): Denser and darker. Again a little richer. Good structure but this bottle seemingly a little two dimensional. Again, a little too warm for clarity. ***

Popped and double decanted two hours before drinking with dinner. This was just okay, lacking the detail and richness associated with the vintage. I'm seriously hoping this is just a bad bottle or dumb phase as I have another bottle. Drank alongside the '99 Clair CSJ which was similarly disappointing.

Ruby with rusty hints. Nose of damp cellar, cherry pits, dark berry, violets. Dense black raspberry and plum notes on the palate with a certain lushness amidst the still-firm tannin. Ample acidity. Moderately long finish of earth-driven dark raspberry and blackberry fruit with a touch of grip. Not really open at this time. Needs more years in the cellar.

Popped and poured, then followed for three hours. Medium-dark ruby color. Nicely developed nose, eventually becoming a blast of dense floral notes, dark raspberry, cherry pits, and earth. Building, persistent layers of savory black raspberry, cherry, brambles, and earthy iron on the palate with lovely integration and presence. Firm but filed-off, slightly dusty tannin balancing lifting acidity. Poised, longer finish of stony red fruit and slow grip. Very enjoyable showing, with a long window of evolution to look forward to.

Pretty dark and fairly full, lacking some finesse, it felt a little clunky in this flight, lots to the wine, but I'm not sure that it was showing its best tonight and will be better with a few more years snoozing

CSJ, Fourier, Esmonin and Rousseau table (La Trompette, London): Savoury with darker red fruit coming through. A bit darker and denser and a little more surly than the Fourier. Needs time to soften and open (same comment as when I first opened the case for Jeremy's St Jacques offline at Tom Aitken's fish gaff a decade ago. **(**). Probably the only wine of the night, possibly bar the 04 Fourier, that still needs real time.

90 minute double decant and then drunk. Last sip was best. Showing tertiary and umami with crunchy berry fruit that is deeply infused with spices. Lovely.

Stored since release in a cold cellar. Deep full coloured. Still red with some brown at edges. Lovely Pinot bouquet. Depth and flavour with perfect balance. Ready but will last.

Nice textures and good weight with dusty black spice, but lacking fruit. Drinkable with a meaty animal type appeal, but more about nuances. I want some sweetness of fruit, lacking in that department.

Dark to very dark. Some VA masks the spice and fruit confection nose. Medium body with a firm grip. This has meatiness and power with elegance that is Burgundy.

pale colour quite mature. Astonishing nose. Sweet stawberry fruit and slightly sour cherries and sous bois. Fragrant silky and persistent. Gentle sweet pure silky fruit on palate. Filled the mouth and then eased elegagntly away to the finish. Best bottle of this I have had. Beautiful wine

#RN-74 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Clos st Jacques Activity# Black fruit dominated in the nose and some spicy, meaty ,mid acid, in the palate some blue fruit, pretty succullent and also silk tannic but lacking the power or concentration, depth for clos st Jacuqes. could be a bit closed and need long time to breath, served after 3hrs bottle opened and check again 1hrs after first round. it is not my taste 90

Gevrey 1er Cru 99s @ Chez Bruce (overflow table) (Chez Bruce, London): Curious how the mice in my old cellar all but destroyed the labels of these, but left the village wine (same bin) untouched. A lovely density and darkness to the fruit. In its own right it's serious, rich, deep and lovely, but it doesn't have the sparkle and the extra level of complexity that the Rousseau shows currently. ****

Overripe nose with plenty of burnt rubber. However, the palate was silky and precise. Consensus was there was some fault with the bottle. However, second bottle was again quite "dirty" although this time with more straightforward brett.

Dinner Mathew and Ellis (Pump House): Cherry red colour with considerable depth and a little bricking. Beautiful intensity on the nose , very Gevrey with plenty of subtle power and minerals unerpinning cherry fruit. Lovely balance and length. Ready to drink for a 1999.

1999 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Clos St. Jacques Horizontal: Tasting, brief note. Sweet black fruit aromas with some toasty spice notes. Similar fruit on palate, good freshness, good spice. Moderate intensity or nuance. Tasted alongside the 4 other domaine producers' 1999s.

An Eclectic Evening (Murray Circle, Sausalito): Out of magnum. Impressively youthful deep ruby. This leads with earth and iron on the nose; later, a whiff of wood and low pitched red fruits make their way into the mix. Firm, medium weight without undue solidity, a hint of sweetness, licorice, smoke, fine acidity, and very accessible now even from this format. Terrific example of a Gevrey Premier Cru.

St Jacques Burgundy Offline (Tom's Kitchen, Chelsea): Closed nose, some darker cherry fruit, some green notes. Bitter and tannic on the palate, short, tannic finish. Not convinced this has the material or balance to improve, others disagreed.

David's 1999 Côtes de Nuits 1er Cru, Village by Village Horizontal (Lorne Restaurant, London): Nose has a saline caper quality with some icing sugar dusted blueberries. Later some lemon and lime sherbet boiled sweets in the distance. Palate once more not the most giving with some tartness on pouring that resolves a little.
