On opening, a bit of poopy diaper and burnt bell pepper. It blows off quickly. The palate is excellent from the start. Fruit and tannin are fully integrated. The cool pencil lead and bell pepper that you want form this comes straight through. This is exactly what you want it to be. Drink up

Initially beautiful fruit aromas on the red side, with good structure and depth, which gradually disappear as the wine progresses and turn into pretty one-dimensional milk chocolate with a little strawberryy. Frankly, everything still very nice and harmonious, but far away from the drug range of 95 pts.
Prices for this wine are currently around 300 euros. Not worth it, sell, 93-.
Another beautiful '96 with a bit more heft than the Pichon but not as refined. What was interesting was how clear the difference was between Pauillac and St. Julien with the Ducru showing more on the red fruit spectrum with a fabulous spicy complexity on the finish. As David said correctly, it did begin to fade in the glass while the Pichon held up better so drink this with a short decant. 95

Non-blind because this was my wine (tasted blind by the others). Incredible purity on the nose with a wonderful notes of classic mature Bordeaux notes (cedar, tobacco, etc.) with some menthol and a greenish note on the finish. This was a perfectly stored bottle of this wine. It was a very "clean" wine.

(Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou) I've had this before and it has been spectacular but this was a strange bottle. Nose came roaring out of the gate with ripe fruits and some lead pencil, smoke, tar . . then then this stank of almost bacteria took over after 1.5 hours and rendered the wine nasty to the nose and stripped the wine of it's fruit. The first hour this wine was going good with a deep well-structured palate and sweet fruit and then it just dived off a cliff and became nasty. Strange experience.
(Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou) I don't remember much but I remember it was juicy, ripe, wide open, finessed and long.
