An excellent wine! Shows some ripeness (blind tasters honed in on either 1990 or 1997), but carries itself well with nice structure (though not as rigid a some of the older Faiveley wines) and very good balance. This wine was served next to a 1993 Meo Clos Vougeot and as such the Faiveley was a bit overlooked in the flight. I agree that the Meo wine was superior and showed more character (even with a touch of brett). But this wine was as good as I hoped it would be.

Faiveley did exceptionally well in 1990, the wines show no roasted fruit character and have wonderful poise and tension, this Clos Vougeot is case in point. It has an intoxicating aroma of moss, decaying leaves, sap, fresh cherries and earth. It is deep and dark in the mouth with some notes of blood plum and meat. There’s good underlying muscle and the finish is direct and long. It is just entering what should be a very long period of drinkability.

Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear hue throughout. Nose of berries, cherries and perfume. Rich flavors of berries and cherries. Medium to bright acidity, medium tannins and medium body. Drink or hold.

Opened a perfect bottle, still fresh with a hint of minerality.

The Clos Vougeot was good, but the fruit wasn't as 'pure' as the Mazis. It just didn't 'pop' in the same manner. A little austere for me.
