This monument of a wine, brought by a friend, reminded that well cellared old clarets at peak are just spellbinding. This at peak beauty is a mountain of power, presence, displaying great flavor authority in such a natural and disarming way.

I might have been more impressed with it tonight but the ravishing beauty of the ‘61 Mouton put this ‘59 in the shade. Still, it’s a fascinating wine due to its power, warmth and complexity. Slightly coarse, though and not totally focused. Held up well in the glass.

50th Birthday Bash - night #2: Phenomenal bottle of 59 Mouton. Reminds me of the almost perfect bottle of 59 Latour that I had a few years ago. Of the first growths that I've had from 59, I rank them 1) Latour 2) Mouton 3) Haut Brion. I now need to try to the Lafite and Margaux. Great wine!
Excellent color and VHS ullage. Real Mouton character with a hint of that glossy black fruit. The tannins and acidity are just right. A fascinating experience but the ‘82 along side it is not unexpectedly much more vibrant.

Mouton Rothschild Vertical: Low ullage but still singing beautifully. Dark ruby colour in appearance. Pronounced nose intensity with red and black fruits, toast, charr wood, mint, earth, mushroom. Medium acidity and medium tannin. If kept well, this vintage can last even longer. Hard to find good provenance after so many years. Enjoyed having this bottle, probably will not have another chance.
