In a beautiful place right now and a blockbuster wine from the 2009 vintage. The sharp angles that once defined this pinot noir-driven cuvée have mellowed out to a style that one could call sheer drinking bliss.
After 30 minutes of air, the original stone fruit and yeasty aromas transform into heady, almost tropical notes framed by a palate-coating minerality.
The Vintage Brut from Champagne Louis Roederer is a 70/30 blend of estate-sourced pinot noir (historical vineyards in Verzy) and chardonnay (Chouilly). A small portion of the wine sees time in oak foudres, and the 2009 is the last non-malo vintage for this cuvée. With the 2012 vintage—released in 2018—Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon started to develop more malo to soften the texture, as Verzy is cool-climate pinot territory and the wines can be very tight.
Limited availability with roughly 200 cases originally imported to the US.

Not bad, if a little generic. No acid-monster. Some initial reduction that blew off. Hazelnuts, cane sugar and apples but all in good shape and nothing over the top. There is a vinous character to it that I enjoy.

From magnum. Upon opening, lots of bubbles dancing through the golden hue. Yeasty aromas with fruit leaning more to the tropical side. Was expecting more energy, though the warm vintage likely contributed to a rounder style.

Good ripeness on the nose with some fishy hints and lightly oxidised. Creamy mouthfeel, toasty autolysis, the bruised fruit and peppery or liquorice like finish. Good length at the end. Has some warmth earthy or nutty to it. Highly drinkable now.

No formal notes taken, but impression was that this was the best bottle so far. Mineral and great persistence, balanced.
