  • From half bottle. Still youthful and going strong, well balanced and tons of stuffing but has tough competition from other recent wines that offers more elegance and finesse. Still, a wonderful wine from a great vintage. 94-95

  • Really tight and rather acidic right after opening. Reading others' notes, decanted (some sediment) and aired for 4 hrs. Really great at hr 6. Nose: Great 9/10. Palate: 9/10. Medium-full bodied. Soft and elegant. Velvety tannin. Smooth. Finish: 8/10. Price: 8/10 ($150 2023). Enjoyment: 10/10. Would buy again: Probably (still one left). @ good drinking window now.

  • Calon Segur 2005 Magnum.

  • Still quite closed and monolithic with a clipped finished. Perhaps representative of a vintage that has been hailed as great but may never deliver in our lifetime.

  • Still a deep fiery garnet red. Some change at the rim. Nose is dense - red berries, red fruits, perhaps a touch of menthol and eucalyptus- almost Antipodean. The tannins are still quite pronounced and chewy. The palate has a balsamic note and the overall impression is of relatively high acidity. Moreish but the acidity is overweening. Solid but rather military medium.

EDIT: I’ve tried it again this evening so 48hrs after opening - it’s mellowed somewhat so I agree with the tip to decant the wine (I left it open for 5 hrs before drinking it). But I don’t think it’s that complex and satisfying - solid but lacking flair.

(CALON-SEGUR) 2005 Bordeaux Dear Friends, Ok, now that we have my Wine of the Year established, what about a downright silly price on one of my favorite old-school 2005 Bordeaux? We offered this wine a few months ago and it remains one of the finest they've ever produced. Ever since the original 2005 barrel tastings I've penned my fondness for it and that has never changed. To sum up my position, I continue to believe it is one of the very top wines of the vintage but its real worth will be for the patient - watch out for this down the road. The 2005 Calon Segur acts like the second coming of the 1989 Montrose - a wine well-received in youth but it was not until 15 years after the vintage that it was finally given its due and acknowledged as potentially a better wine than the legendary 1990 Montrose (Pat could have told you that 10 years ago - it's been one of his favorite wines for years). 1989 Montrose was available for a relative song until 4-5 years ago - not anymore. With that as our impetus, a pristine parcel of the 2005 Calon-Segur became available a few days ago at what can only be stated as a ridiculous price - lower than the first tranche offering 2-3 years ago. This is an impeccable lot that (once again) gives credence to what I've been saying since the summer: has the en-premier model outgrown its use for a broad segment of Bordeaux? There will always be a handful of wines that immediately sell out but why give the negociants your hard earned funds 2-3 years in advance if you are able to acquire many of the best wines after release at a lesser price? It's not supposed to work that way but, in the reality of Q4 2008, it does. What makes this even more bizarre is that it's a multitude of wine from the "vintage of the century" - a vintage that (in the words of one of my close friends stationed in Bordeaux for years) "will never be discounted, never - demand will always outstrip supply for 2005". Every market has its balancing act due to supply and demand and the Bordelaise have found themselves in a pickle - supply has outstripped demand. At a certain price, the demand outweighs the supply and I believe our price below will prove that point as well. If it means anything, I purchased a case of this for my own cellar as it was too good of a price to pass up. If you already have this wine, you can double down to shave your overall cost or sit on a parcel as an investment. As far as reviews, I will re-print (as I did with the last offer) the Parker barrel review next to the finished bottle rating. Most of the journalists tasted this wine after it was only in bottle for a short time - I urge you to consider the barrel review with as much credence as the finished review (keep in mind what I've said above regarding 1989 Montrose) - I have little doubt that after 10-15 years of age, the 2005 Calon-Segur will be a great modern classic with numbers to match: VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as one of my absolute favorite tannic, old-style Bordeaux (with a feminine touch). In addition, this wine has the chance to last longer than almost any wine of the vintage (even the First Growths). This would be an outstanding choice for a 21st birthday or potential wedding wine from the birth-year of your child (can you imagine a few cases of pristine, cellared 2005 Calon-Segur to pull out at your son or daughter's wedding - even if it's 30 years from now?) ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this terrific price with perfect provenance. (Like the Chablis from this morning and considering those of you that purchase Bordeaux for the long haul, I will open this up to 36/person to give you the chance to cellar multiple cases) 2005 Calon-Segur (Saint Estephe) 750ml Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Bord5610

(CALON SEGUR) Calon-Segur Dear Friends, A pristine parcel of this is floating around the US at a seriously reduced tarriff and it's an original cellar lot. If you ever wondered what 1966 Latour tasted like in youth (or even something like 1900 Margaux), this style has gone by the wayside but it should win out in the end. Wasn't Bordeaux supposed to be unfriendly and tannic after bottling? When did Bordeaux become easy to drink a month after venturing into its vessel? I'm not sure I want St. Estephe to be easy to drink in youth - I would prefer the message in the bottle to reveal itself when it feels ready to wash ashore. This is a wine and format I am quite certain will be worth far more than its present rate if given the requisite cellar time. As the 2005s become harder to find (and as they start to age), magnums and large format will most certainly increase in value. Calon-Segur was one of the top examples of the vintage from the get-go (there was a period where it toyed with WOTV honors while aging in barrel) and only a severely closed state at the final bottle tastings prevented it from scoring among the top-tier of the vintage (1986 Las Cases was also severely closed at the final bottle tastings so keep that in mind). I will be shocked if the scores for this wine stay even close to this (you can check the original barrel scores - the wine should be in that range or higher when all is said and done) - a top buy for a magnum at this point and a potential investment: VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - one of the highest recommendations of the vintage: 2005 Calon Segur 1.5lt (St. Estephe) STRICT LIMIT 6/person until we run out ...we also have a few of these - also interesting but I believe the 2005 will prevail in a decade (and the 2005 vintage will be more valuable as a whole in time): 2003 Calon Segur 1.5lt (St. Estephe) STRICT LIMIT 6/person until we run out Both arrive with impeccable provenance at some point this fall (they are on the water now). They will ship during the first available shipping window (weather permitting). Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Bord9111 Bord9112
