  My second 1949 Bordeaux this month and it conforms how shockingly good they can be. It helps that this bottle was part of the famously well preserved Ben Inchinose collection with ullage just below neck. Classical St. Estèphe burly concentration. Although the cassis fruit is obviously old it is indeed really lively and full of interest. The tannins have merged into the juice very well and the acidity is just so. These ancient bottles are compelling in their complexity.

  Medium murky garnet color with rust edge. Powerful tertiary nose of stewed plums, stewed mushrooms, meat, barnyard, wet forest floor. Dry, soft acidity, mellow pleasant crunchy acidity, palate follows through. Full body, outstanding balance, long persistent finish. Plateaus fast, drink asap.

  Majestic accurately describes the soaring aromatics chocked full of tobacco, truffle, Asian spice, cigar box, ash, earth, cherry and stone. Refined, soft, round and generous, with a fresh, spicy, pure cherry finish, this was treat. Perhaps the reason I have not followed Calon Segur is, I've never tasted a properly aged example. That situation has now been rectified!
