The fill level was med-high neck. The cork was in fairly rough condition extruded by 3 mm. The wine was decanted just prior to serving and showed significant sediment. The hue was quite good for an wine of this age with bricking but not actual browning. At first, the aromas were heavily dominated by mushroom. the acidity level provided a lift to the wine. The tannins are fully resolved. After much air contact, some tar and sour cherry notes emerge as well as tobacco. The cedar element was also very present all along. No doubt this wine peaked a decade or two ago but it still holds great interest. It's quite amazing what you can do in a cool climate with a noble grape variety planted in the right spot... The finish lingers.it may well be supported by acidity but is still pleasant.

Blind Tasting in Evanston (Tina's condo): '68 Heitz reg cab, '68 Antonio Vallana Spanna, '2005 Cliff Lede cab (Wine Library blind tasting winner), 2004 Beringer cab (Wine Library blind tasting loser). Notes: "Clearly one of the older wines; bouquet is good, fruit moderate. In great shape for 40 years! I thought this was the Heitz and so did everyone else!"
