  • 1998 elvio cogno
Rusty maroonish and not translucent. This threw a lot of fine sediment when decanted. 75 mins after decanting; aged nose of autumn leaves, fine leather. On the palate, fresher than what it looks, the leather and earthiness translates to the palate, aged plum and a bit of orange peel, tiny menthol notes! Low acidity and receded tannins on a medium finish. Delicious and Delightful for a 25 yr old wine.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 7 = 88/100

Color: Orange-brown with a wide lighter edge. Aroma / bouquet: Pleasant and ripe bouquet. Tar, leather, dried dates and prunes. Earthy and grounding. Taste / Aftertaste: After 21 years of development, this Barolo is still characterized by powerful acids, powerful tannins and an above-average aftertaste. General / potential: This tasting note probably says more about my preference for 'relatively cool climate monocage wines' such as Bourgogne and Barolo than about the intrinsic quality of this wine. Both Burgundy and Barolo can blow me off my socks. It is a pity that this happens so rarely. Nice wine but in no way my thing. 50 + Color: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 10 + Taste / Finish: 16 + General / potential: 7 = 88/100

  • This bottle was more advanced than I was expecting. A lot of earth and (pleasant) funk on the nose. On the palate, dark faded fruit, earthy, modest acidity, and quite smooth, but the finish did not linger. A nice bottle, but I'm not sure it can get to the next level.

  • An inviting nose. Roses, earth, tar, and a little leather. It is expansive yet lithe with a softness and suppleness I would guess is the Rose clone. Lovely balance, power and finesse. This is no wallflower, it has plenty of power, but it has subtlety and grace. Expansive and with effortless power. Quite long on the finish. Drinking at early peak. Beautiful. 93
