  • Well this has turned the corner.

Double decanted in the AM, then decanted for a couple hours in the afternoon after checking its evolution. Drunk over a couple hours that evening.

Roses and tar, with the florals of Rose clone. Terrific perfume. On the plate, it is ripe but not fat. There is flesh to the wine, but it also has terrific detail and a sense of balance. More roses, tar, iron, and a mix of red and dark nebbiolo fruit. The rough elbows from several years ago have come together nicely. Finishes with firm but ripe tannins. So much better than 5 years ago and I suspect will be better in another few years. Youthfully outstanding with room for improvement.

  • Decent Barolo with age. Pretty sure this was made with barrique. Got a bit of the oak in it. Crowded out some of the other flavors. Give it more time.

  • This is a barnburner -- top level classic barolo. It is drinking wonderfully now, though it clearly can be held for years and years, still young. The nose is intense floral notes with a background of tar and leather and fresh dug earth. The tannins are still big and real, and beautiful in their astringency. The palate is a mellow, yet bright, basket of dark nebbiolo fruit (very lively), black tea, more leather.. And the backgound acidity and the still very real tannins just transport each mouthful into a long ending.

  • A stunningly beautiful wine. Drank at dinner party that featured several great bottles of Barolo , but this one stood out for its grace and complexity.

  • Nov 2018

    Decanted for 4+ hours.

Dark and brooding. On the nose, tar and ferrous, with rose hips and cherry fruit. Deep and tannic and somewhat beastly on the palate. It's structured but it lacks a little of midpalate at this point. It was really stern and closed at first, and with several hours in the decanter it became more civilized. Dried roses and at this point an interesting mix of darker and redder fruited nebbiolo. It still has a little shrinking hole in the middle after four hours, but parts of it are outstanding. I suspect this may turn into something special in a decade or more but at this point everything is not quite in harmony. Very long, with balsam and tar on the back end. A hint of heat on the back end. Judgement reserved, cautious optimism.
