  • Advanced with no primary aromas, in lieu dried rose, tar, and cinnamon define an exuberant but not particularly fresh wine. Still a bit of tannic grip and sufficient structure to suggest further aging potential but this is already rather dried out so not expecting much.

  • Having said last year that I would keep my remaining bottle for another five years, I found myself pulling the cork on this one tonight and glad I did.

A much more advanced colour this time with a distinct mahogany hue to the darkest purple. The nose is drop dead gorgeous with dried rose petals, menthol, new asphalt and tar. Very concentrated and rich but with good tannic grip and bite, this seems bang in the middle of its drinking window and while it obviously has years (or even decades) to go, I have absolutely no regrets about pulling the cork on this, my last bottle. What a delicious wine. Fortunately my wife's taste extends no further than £10 New Zealand pinot noir which means I have the rest of the bottle to enjoy tomorrow on my own. Wahoo!

  • Bought a couple of bottles to see what all the fuss is about. Decanted one hour. Longest cork I've ever seen.

As others have said, an incredibly dark and youthful colour for nebbiolo let alone one that is 23yrs old - just a hint of garnet visible in its rich smoky depths. A little bit stinky on the nose at first then comes the menthol, roses and tar you'd expect. Very concentrated fruit but still tannic and acidic - this must have been one ferocious angry beast in its youth. Despite being only middle weight, there's a richness and depth to the fruit that is difficult to describe and some good old drying tannins on the finish. Will hold on this plateau for many years yet.

On the whole a good but not a great wine which didn't blow me out of my socks. I'll leave my remaining bottle another five years.

  • Incredibly dark, youthful and tannic, this 22-year-old Piedmont has developed an animal aged Bordeaux like nose which stumped all my fellow wine lovers a few evenings ago. Atypically dark for Nebbiolo with perfectly balanced mid-palate and finish, this wine will continue to evolve effortlessly for the following 10 year and maybe beyond. I fear recent Gaja wines will never be as sensational as they were in this heralded vintage. 1996 still continues to be my reference point for what Piedmont can achieve in a sensational vintage. Amazing!

  • Drank from coravin. Found the wine a bit closed/Def decant next time!
Dark red in color, not showing much age on the rims. Lots of sediment.
Quite earthy, dark fruit still present, still some tannins but soft. Leather, tar, sour cherry, forest floor and coffee. Looking forward to trying this again.
