Standout among five 80's and 90's vintage wines that suffered lifetime passive cellaring and two trips across the U.S. in a moving van at the peak of summer heat. Bing cherry fruit, tobacco, graphite and sandalwood are evident as is the classic old world structure. One swoons to imagine what a bottle with pristeen provenance would be like.

At tasting. Served double blind. Brief note. The nose on this was one of the most sensual and seductive noses I've smelled on a wine before. Intensely perfumed sandalwood, oud, ground dark roast coffee beans, dried herbs, and bitter dark chocolate. Palate shows the same seductive core as the nose wrapped in soft red cherries and blackberries, a beautiful musky animale note, and warm damp soil. Velvety mouthfeel with great extract and structure. This was seriously complex and an absolute knockout.

South African wines: Strong presence in the beginning. Mild tertiary fruits, some animal notes and barnyard. Monolith, well integrated, medium-low bodied elegant wine that should be drunk by itself. No food necessary. In fact, after an hour in the glass, it starts to fade and becomes rather herbal and lifeless, but straight from the bottle it is mighty.

Tasting of historically interesting South African Wines (Auslese, Cape Town): Deep garnet, the nose has a very volatile character. The entry is soft, fruity with a mineral edge, and the acid is not as hard as expected, given the volatility. Starts quite nicely but finishes relatively dry and with a cardboard finish. Slightly compromised too? 1991 is one of the top vintages, so pity to see this not showing well.

Library Tasting with Geoff Kelly - 1990s - in memory of Ken Kirkpatrick (Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington, New Zealand): Dense ruby colour. Very ripe nose of dark berries, candy cane spice and chocolate. Somewhat closed, but very ripe. Big and alcoholic on the palate. Fleshy and structured. The wine boasts very harmonious acid and feels mature. There is a slight note of rubber hose on the finish. Good.
