Mature and ready, it needed a bit of air to wake up, classy and slightly understated, I was expecting a little more acidity from the vintage, but enjoyed this immensely. Apparently the wine was made by Jean-Marie's father and was his last vintage, although JM did the elevage.

CSJ, Fourier, Esmonin and Rousseau table (La Trompette, London): Quite dense and savoury. Showing well but a little muddy cf the 93 Esmonin. Lots of appreciation around the table though. Plenty of interest but for me not quite the class. A slight dullness on the finish. ****

Nice vibrant colour, but unclean nose that took time to blow off. Lots of vibrancy in the mouth - this is only just entering its sweet spot drinking window (I expect this could account for some of the negative reviews below). Less quality than his 85 CSJ, but this needs another 5-10yrs to really show what it is capable of. Still, not apparently a good effort in what was a good vintage. 87pts now for me, but with potential for another 3-4pts if this improves (better fundamental material showing than the 93 Esmonin, it's just not as ready).

With only 1(disappointing) note from an experienced taster, it didn't bode well for this bottle. I purchased 4 bottles in 1996 and consumed 2 bottles before 2004. At that time I noted prominent tannins hiding the fruit, but nothing objectionable. 10 year more bottle time has improved the balance immensely. Very fragrant, red fruits on the palate, and staying power. A bit austere, but balanced. At its peak, but I won't rush to drink my last bottle.

Zachy's La Paulee 2020; 3/5/2020-3/6/2020 (Le Bernardin Prive): Made by Papa Fourrier, old school, good balance, less extracted. 92?
